Hi, getting my bike this coming week and would like to know of any areas in Howick, Highland Park where it is safe to practice.

Lloyd Elsmore Park carpark.

I rode around Cockle Bay quite a bit... not much traffic.

Around Bucklands Beaches... although can get busy on the weekend.

I went up and down Point View Drive quite a bit too.

As long as you stay away from rush hour ... most places are quite ok to get some experience but Lloyd Elsmore Carpark (Near netball courts) is huge and great for practising emergency braking etc.

New bike huh ... way cool. Places that come to mind would be Highland Park car park ... but is it ever closed? College grounds... Howick/Pakuranga/McLeans/ ? Botany Downs? Or maybe out flat bush where they're putting the new raods in but there's no development (or traffic) there yet. Trouble with that last idea is that you have to negotiate the Chowick drivers to get there and that could be a VeryBadThing. Maybe Musick Point although there's not much space there.

really, you want something very close to where you live. Then you don't have to travel far, nor negotiate traffic. I live on the peninsula, and just practised around the tip, during the day. Suburban streets can be very quiet during the weekday, and so there is no danger pootling along at 40, thinking its fast :D

What he said. Find the quietest cul de sacs closest to where you live to keep away from traffic, and you get more confident, expand this practice area.

Thats a great place. It's quiet and has got a bit of space. Watch out for leaner drivers, One nearly drove into my bike while it was parked!

Thanks guys, you are right, Lloyd Elsmore is the best place, will be getting up quite early to avoid the other learners. Now that d-day is nearing I'm getting quite apprehensive about going on the road - still I suppose it's all part of the learning curve!
