What is it with Wellington traffic at the mo? The run in from the Hutt is packed every morning, with long queues from Haywards all the way to Korokoro - have they changed the sequencing of the lights or something??

Makes me real glad I'm on the :scooter: !

Takes until April for people to settle down after having a couple of weeks off. Yesterday there was an accident North of the BP station on the Old Hutt Rd between 7:15am and 7:30am and Fulton Hogan had a lane blocked. The repurcussions of an accident seem to reverberate for a couple of hours on the traffic flow.

You guys should try travelling across the city at rush hour. That bloody bypass has done exactly what we said it would: just shift the bottleneck further down the road. Good luck getting round the basin between 5 and 6pm

actually I've done this - did a run into wmcc after work but got there after 5:30, it took longer to get into town than it did to get out and I wasn't splitting on the way out either as no need

The new bypass has not only moved the bottleneck, but has extended travel
time trying to get accross town, the light sequence is so long if you are trying to get accross it
My work is right on the corner where it starts $40 million shambles

You may have a point - this time last year I was getting the train in from Plimmerton, so that's why it seemed quieter!

Don't know what caused the holdup between Haywards and Lower Hutt lights this morning, but the next holdup from Petone is cos FH are resurfacing the road (overnight) and the new road surface seems to confuse some drivers

I'm lucky enough to be travelling north along SH2 in the mornings. The traffic has been really slow this week. One of the chaps I work with took an hour to get from Upper Hutt to Petone this morning.

It's been pretty busy down the Gorge as well. Just take it easy out there guys, there'll be a few frustrated cagers around.

Just a quick heads up about the Takas. Just went up for a play and they're up there busily mowing the sides of the hill on the road, there's stones and debris all over the road, just be careful folks!

i was wondering about the traffic too, seems this week that there is a shit load of traffic build up prior to Petone overbridge but then its normal through to town, usual is for build up from Maungaraki onwards but seems of late to be from Avalon onwards. What The!
Went to the Riffer School of Lanesplitting last week and found it very useful as i now have a bit more confidence to split on my own. Im that black Hyo that has to jump out of the way to allow the faster splitters go past. My splitting ends at about 70-80km/h. Traffic been good at moving out of the way too for us bikes.

Yeah - traffic in from Petone was slow this morning. Seemed to be that people were randomly slowing down where the resurfacing finished - perhaps because there were some scary traffic cones all the way off the road on the left hand side??

Oooo - scary! And they're not in my lane - better slow down for no reason at all.

The other bad spot is the Petone esplanade heading towards Eastbourne in the evenings. It is stop start all the way along there and there's legality issues (I presume) with going along the left in the turning lanes (if you're not turning left until your driveway in EB, for example...)

[edit - a thread of its own started here http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=936948#post936948. I really would like to know and don't want to hijack this thread!]

Finally, just near the Exide plant on Waione street last night, some tosser pulled out into the line of traffic and was following me really close. I was keeping an eye on him, which was just as well because the wanker almost hit me when traffic in front slowed down - he actually had to swerve to avoid hitting my back tire. Good thing the road is wide enough there that he could do that without causing any other mayhem.

What a jerk. I gave him a glare but he probably couldn't tell through my dark visor. A-hole. I think I'm done ranting now.

Does anyone know what the legalities or otherwise of travel on the Esplanade are and what any fines might be if you did happen to get stopped doing something dodgy?

You think it's bad at the moment! Wait until they start the Dowse Interchange construction later in the year. The motorway will, at varying times, be down to one lane in each direction! Yes, thats at least a 50% reduction in capacity - probably more due to rubbernecking. Something to look forward to.

Walks up to bike, thinks "going to ease off a bit on this run"
gets on bike rides off "bloody slow morons*"
Goes past first slow moron thinks "can get past this one too"
insane lunatic passes "doh! what am i being a moron for, i'm a lunatic too"

Have you ever realised how everyone who is slower than you is a moron and everyone faster, a lunatic?

But it is so much fun being a lunatic!

Yep, but only the Dowse interchange is getting done at this stage - we are going to have to wait longer for Melling, KoroKoro and the section of SH2 past Petone Bowl (although the latter is at least in the 10 year plan). Once it's all done it will make a big difference, but there will still be the bottleneck at the Petone onramp. That stays unfortunately.

What's with the traffic round the Basin? Dropped the SV off for it's first service yesterday and headed off home about 4.30pm. The traffic along Kent Tce seemed to be gridlocked.

Fortunately the GSR 600 that I was given as a 'loaner' was just the ticket for a bit of traffic slicing but what a pain!

Ahhh ... so that's where you are! I have had this compelling feeling of getting the Wednesday night ride to invade the plateau and twin valleys ending up at the short straw cafe (if they would stay open). I can't say that the natives would be well pleased but by the time all the *555 calls have been made, we'd all be as quiet as mice having Latte's!

I reckon that would be a much cool ride ... Duck Pond to top of Taka's, then left at Te Marua and into RifferLand

The latter. There will a grade separated interchange at Koro Cres/ Korokoro Rd with on/ offramps and a Maungaraki/ Hutt connection (it will be straightened out, and that dog leg at Koro Cres will go). The new Dowse interchange will also include an overbridge between Normandale and the Hutt.

During construction though, there will be a period (several months) where the Maungaraki/ Hutt connection will not be available.

Once finished (10 years+) there will be no traffic lights until Fairway Drive.

For the record I haven't worked in roading for a couple of years now.

It used to be similar for me Nasty. Along the twisties from Tawa to Churton Park. Onto SH1.. worked in RNZ House so just straight along the Terrace slip road and into the underground carpark at the lights. About 12 mins on the bike.
We change buildings about 4 weeks ago and now have to fight my way along the quay to the Intercontinental. Then it's spend another 10 mins trying to find a place to park (unless I go in early). Since moving buildings, it's added about 15mins each way to my commute.
