been out for a full days roaming on me bike ... crusing home through the burbs earlier this evening feeling refreshed with an uncluttered head & this kid riding the handle bars of his mate push bike decides to give me the finger (12-14 year olds)

normally it's water off a ducks back, that sort of social delinquency ... but then I got to thinking ... "all it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing" so said someone who's no longer on this earth ... so 500m or so down the road i do a ueee & go looking for this pair to find out why he flipped me the bird

see them up ahead riding the foot path on the same side of the road as me & I pull in beside them ... "so why did you give me the finger" I say ... his mouth was going up & down but I didn't hear a thing ... still had me ear plugs in, helmet on & sitting on a running bike ... so I ask them to stop ... with that the guy riding decides to put a bit of ommmph into the peddles ... crusing along beside them at a jogging sort of pace I grab the handle bar rides hoody as I still want to hear his answer ... this unsettles their bike & we all stop

loose me grip on the handle bar riders (hbr) hoody & he's off in a flash ... he hauls up 10-15m down the foot path ... my bikes parked & i'm on the foot path walking down to him, still fully kitted up ... he keeps running maintaining the distance ... 10m or so down the foot path his mate sidles up to me asking what me problem is ...

tell him what happened & I want to find out why ... his mate calls the hbr over but he ain't havin a bar of it ... this goes on for a couple of minutes ... gettin no where fast & I sence their conferdance growing ... the hbr is getting mouthy & his mate chips in ... his mate is still handy to me so I swipe his cap off his head, telling him he'll get it back when the hbr gets over here & gives me an answer ...

"give me, me cap back man" ... when ya mate comes over I replyed ... "you ain't go no beef with me man, give me, me cap back" ... he had a point there but I felt I needed to keep the upper hand by any means ... his mate gettin fairly wound up now & the hbr is approching ... with that i see a flash of steel in the form of a kitchen peeling knife or similar ... 50mm blade with a point & a black plastic handle ... NOW his mate has got my full & undivided ATTENTION

we exchange our needs again & again ... his, for his cap & me, for the hbr, all the time his mate getting more & more excited ... his cap in hand I start back tracking to me bike, watchin that blade & also the hbr, now right on his hip ... bike reached, leg over, key on, starter hit & gone in what felt like a milli second ...

so I've got me a souvioner from me days roaming... a black 50CENTS G FORCE cap ...

That seems an overly generous response, I was thinking of something slower and more painful.
Seriously mate, I'm glad you are ok and I hope the little shits get dealt to by Karma. (or an agent thereof)

where abouts in chch did this happen. there used to be a group of kids that would shoot me with there pretending pump action shotguns ( .........hmmmmmmmmm same thing used to happen over the local BP fence - theres no hope for some people)

they used to throw rocks at cars as well and one day one of the dumb cunts threw a rock at me on my bike - slammed the brakes on yelled at them for a few minutes as they each blamed each other looking like they were going to shit there pants. thought that would be the end of that but a few days later they were at it again...........

That sucks, and you did the right thing to get out of there this is the kind of situation that could have escalated ended up with you at the best needing a trip to the hospital.

Sounds to me like these kids have no respect and as was stated need a good kick in the nuts, you just know that they will be bragging to their mates about this.

The worst part is that even if you report the knife its most likely that you would get charged with some stupid offence and these kids would get to spend a few minutes in a family group conference with some naby pamby social worker telling them how misunderstood they are.

After your U-turn, ride your bike on the footpath up behind them and give them a good boot as you go past. Both go down in a heap. Quick, easy, no fuss, no knives ;)

I agree with your thinking mate - farking young teens get away with this sort of shit far too often. Their parents can't discipline them, their school can't discipline them... they just run amok tagging, vandalising, swearing, acting like total knobheads. And one carrying a knife? Man that would have got me pretty angry if he pulled one out near me!

I think your comment about evil prevailing when good men do nothing, is right on the money. I had a similar instance myself riding home on my mountain bike the other day, although it did not involve a knife thankfully.

I confronted two youths who had seen fit to leave their bikes fully blocking the cycle path, and who were mouthing off at another cyclist who had stopped to shift the bikes. After I finished with them, one of them ended up in tears etc etc, but if I had ridden past by going around on the grass, they would have continued this behaviour, so I am all for calling these punks out, but I do emphasise caution as well.

These kids need to know that certain behaviour is unacceptable.

I would have given them both a hug!

Seriously though (were you wearing leathers?) you should have really challenged them. Force them to back down. The little fuck that pulled out the knife would have, at the very least, gotten a smack upside the head. Little fucks get away with shit like that and they start thinking they can do it all the time. What did that cop (not Scummy) say down south? "They just need a good kick in the arse!"

Plug, as much as I agree with your initial sentiments I can't agree with your actions and think you were a bit lucky in the end.

Had you ridden by and ignored the little pricks there would have been no change in either their or your attitudes but now they have the realisation that their big knife has enough power to scare off an adult biker for the price of a $10:00 cap.

Bolstered by this the next biker they are confronted by they will probably notch their attitude up to the next step and try using the knife.

Their problem is much more deep seated than just flicking the bird at sundry passers by, it goes right to to the core of current New Zealand society!

As was mentioned above, had any more of their mates suddenly turned up and you got isolated from your only means of escape (BMW) you could have quite easily now been the first item on a brief media news item!

I enjoyed reading about your nice day out riding, the alternative, for the sake of a delinquent flick of the bird does not weigh up!

Sorry but I don't think that was your best decision of the day and I value your friendship more than that and they probably got your number so it might not be all over yet.

Reading what you wrote above, the do gooders of this day and age would have a field day against you (the adult aggressor) in court too. (IMHO)

I am just pleased that you are OK! Cheers John.

Sorry Oldrider, I disagree, Plug did the right thing confronting them. I feel we need to stand up against any type of crap behaviour and stop it as soon as it occurs.
I would have done the same, including baling out when a knife was pulled. At the end of the day they have lost their belongings and may well think twice about behaving like arseholes next time. Conversely (as others have said) it may encourage them, but you do what you can in any situation.

best form of defence is attack 1st when the blood is runnig hot.no good waiting to you see them again. its then that you think about the implacations and tell yourself you dont realy want to go to jail over some fuck wit you dont even know. some of the youth today get away with far to much because of there age.years ago the cop would give them a good clip around the ears and say dont ever let me catch you playing up again.there is know where near enough respect left for others we shear our world with.

Squeak the Rat
15th February 2007, 08:27
And there in lies the problem. You can't give kids a bollocking these days because you will lose unless they are actually nice kids trying to act like gangstas. Kids know their rights, they know you can't smack them upside the head, and now they know that might is right.

Stopping may not have been the best solution, but is ignoring it a better alternative? Good on ya for giving a shit, and good decision to leg it.

It's very easy to say "you should have smacked his head in", but it's a little different when you are actually facing a knife. Two options, either you leg it (recommended solution) or you take them on knowing one of you might not be walking home.

Patrick
15th February 2007, 08:42
Helmet (and I mean the motorbike one, fools...) held firmly in your hand makes for a good defensive weapon... can strike up and down as well as across in both directions, and put in good straight jabs to the face too... A vegetable peeler knife is no match for that at all. Self defense against a knife carrier regardless of the age, you would be sweet!

Its unlikely that I would have stopped but in any event first sign of a knife then I would have been out of there pronto, 14 years or not. 2 reasons:

1. 5 years of Kyokushinkai and the favourite Noob demo was to get a black belt to defend himself from a noob with a vivd marker (the knife) granted the noob would get flatend in 5 seconds but never without inflicting a "serious" injury. Real world, would the noob have been monstered if it was a knife? Point made.

2. I had the misfortune of sitting on a jury where the victim was stabbed 14 times by a man that was considerabley smaller. Of the 14 wounds 2 were considered the fatal blows. 100mm deep, thats a small knife.

Knives are a lottery at best, pricks of things. I would contact the cops and lay a complaint on the basis the guy was carrying one in the first place.

Who's being infantile, its fact. Maori and PI's are hugely overrepresented in violent crime statistics in NZ.

The odds of a teenager who's wearing "50cent G-unit" gear, and carrying a concelaed knife being maori or PI are far greater than the odds of them being european, asian, or any other ethnicity.

Hell I just did a spot quiz around the office, and 3 out of 3 of the other staff here (1 crusty liberal old white guy (Wolf), and 2 20ish maori guys) agreed that they would ALSO assume the people involved were maori or PI.

Just because its not politically correct doesnt make it bullshit.

You read a lot into what I said... let me spell it out a little more...

You're probably right, I agree. Based on the evidence at hand, they probably are Maori or Pacific Islanders... likely wannabe gangsters on their way up through the ranks. The fact you deduced that likelihood isn't so impressive.

That you felt is necessary to point it out however - why? Why is that so essential to the conversation at had? Does it make you feel more superior, or do you have a point to prove?

A cause to push perhaps?

That is why I pointed it out. Your profiling skills are probably about average. Yes it's not PC to jump to conclusions and bring race into the conversation, and I could care less about that.

My questions remains - why is it so important to you - such that you insist on pointing it out? What do you stand to gain?

Poor call mate. Maybe there are over-representations of certain ethnic groups in either the prison system or violent crime statistics but a gross generalisation like that is pretty rank.

Funny innit? How so many 'Kiwi's' regardless of ethnicity support national teams made up of a variety of people from various backgrounds, and shout from the hills when they win. But offer a situation like this and they're so racist. You've never seen a teenager (of any other sort than 'black') wear a 50c, G unit, or other type of baseball cap that has something to do with rap culture?

So you agree that most people assumed these two were of a certain ethnic group. The choices too me then are pointing that out, or sweeping it under the carpet and ignoring it because its not PC to point out that certain ethnic minorities are far more likely to commit crimes.

PS: vis a vis Chris Rock's "Niggers vs Black People" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niggers_vs_Black_People), it might have been more approriate to refer to them as niggers than black.

No - I don't speak for, or assume what others think. I try to do that for myself. I simply said the chances are higher they fall into those ethnic groups based on the information at hand. What I also asked is why it's so important to you that needed to assume their ethnicity and make that statement.

Did you also point out their gender, martial status, sexual orientation, or religion? Why not? Many of those are similarly easy to assume with a reasonable degree of confidence.

Edit - it's also possibly inappropriate to refer to them as nigga, blacks or anything other than Causian... y'know - open mind and all that...

Regardless of what is "statistically" the case you cannot say that the individuals in this case are of any race whatsoever - you have no proof. Are you seriously trying to say that because a crime was commited, it was commited by a "nigger" as you put it (or black or dog or whatever other bigoted term you wish to use)?

I'm sorry I must have missed that class - the class that was supposed to teach me that all criminals are "mud" people unless proven otherwise. Sociopathic serial killers are statistically more like to be white, and aged in their 20's or early 30's :-)

For all that people argue about lies, damned lies, and statistics; statistics, and the profiling that can be deduced from them are useful.

Maori/Island people ARE more likely to commit violent crimes.
White people ARE more likely to be serial killers.
Muslims ARE more likely to wear clothing by DuPont.
You ARE more likely to be struck by lightening than win lotto.

Does that mean that all maoris are going to bash you, all whites will stalk and kill you, all muslims will blow up your bus and that if you win lotto you should avoid storms for the rest of your life? Course not.. But it means if your walking down the road and see some rough looking maoris they ARE more likely to thump you than the asians on the other side of the road and its probably time to cross.

And as for my reasoning MDU, I cant give you any definitive answer other than I think its wrong to NOT point out things like that.

tell him what happened & I want to find out why ... his mate calls the hbr over but he ain't havin a bar of it ... this goes on for a couple of minutes ... gettin no where fast & I sence their conferdance growing ... the hbr is getting mouthy & his mate chips in ... his mate is still handy to me so I swipe his cap off his head, telling him he'll get it back when the hbr gets over here & gives me an answer ...

Nice!! What a fucking retard, feeling tough 'cos he had a knife. You gotta know how to use it before pulling it.

I dont think the kid expected me lunge foward and grab his arm, it wasnt a big knife but thats not to say that it couldnt do damage. I feel that if I hadnt done something about it, the kid would have done something stupid and fucked up his life more than it was already.

Plug, one thing to remember is that the jaw is right next to one of the main arteries which go to the brain, a decent whack to the jaw should promptly put the little shit on his arse(gloves with reinforced knuckles help..). But it pays to be causious of them when their in numbers as they usually have the pack mentality, Ive been caught out by this before and ended up having 5 stitches next to my eye.

EDIT: if you can get your hands on one of those extending batons that cops have, its pretty cool seeing the reaction of the little shit/s when you flick it out, they usually they dont stick around long.

Amazing how a dumb situation can come close to turning scary so quickly. I had a few dumb incidents with the youth at risk program in NJ with knives a few times and two with guns. One pointed at me. Not good.

At least you didnt do the quick hardcore backdown, it would have just told the punk that a knife gives him power over people, and no good ever comes from carrying like that.

<_<

About 6 years ago - when I separated from my wife (we're back together again:first: ) and I was at the zenith of my with anger, self esteem and depression issues, bla bla bla... - I had a beer bottle thrown at me as I rode past 3 young Polynesian brothers who had congregated on the side of the road in Mt Roskill. It was about 11:30pm at night and because I had nothing better to do with my life at that time, turned my bike around, parked it up on the otherside of the road and walked over to them.

As I still had my helmet on, they must have thought it was Christmas thinking that John Smith from Remuera was going to take them on. Imagine their surprise as I took my helmet off, greeted them in Samoan (which I am) and preceeded to use my Helmet as a baton and the side of their Toyota Cressida to knock one of them out - unconscious.

My ardrenalin was maxed out. It was intense. In total it lasted just over a minute. And thankfully it took a very brave old Chinese man who lived nearby to stop me from from doing any further damage.

Two points I'd like to make here:
1. If you feel lucky punk and decide to pull that bike around - Quicky weigh up the situation and dont fark around. Nothing beats intent and the element of surprise.

2. HOWEVER - make sure that you aren't related to anyone you smash. It doesnt go well with the extended family - especially if you have disfigured them for life.

I agree completely, I have a younger brother (a wigga) who isnt as bad as what we are talking about, but some of his mates are and I am very protective over our house because of that (I bolt all the doors every night before i go to bed etc etc)

A year or so back my family was all away in different places i think for new years, and my little brother happened to lie to us about going to Omaha with one of his mates, and went ahead and had a party at our family home with some of his so called 'friends', when I got back within cellphone reception I had about 5 voicemail messages from my dad/mum/little sister saying that my brother had a party and that we'd been robbed and the house was wrecked. Turned out that when my brother passed out, his 'friends' decided to help themselves to $3000 worth of stuff and about $2000 worth of my mothers jewellry. The funny thing is that my brother is still mates with half the people that did it.

Its maggots like that, that are fucking up society. Most of them to be honest have very little future in my opinion.

I know its dumb, it hasnt become apparent that my brother respects my family very much due to his tagging on almost any available surface, Ive attatched a pic of the keyboard as an example, among his other socially detrimental habits. I dont think most of his mates respect him very much either, although this hasnt become apparent yet appart from them treating my home like a dos house and emptying the pantry (which my mum struggles to fill on her paycheque) after my brother and his mates spend a night smoking weed downstairs.

what could i do ... here's this 12-14 year old kid fronting up & appoligising for his actions on his off his own back

we had a civil chat about that day & i asked him a few questions ... what would your mum say about what happened that day ... I couldn't see the point of ranting & raving or calling the cops in, he's use to that ... it's my hope that he will get himself off the path that he's on ... time will tell

This is veering from Plug's thread a bit, but tonight I had a bit more trouble with my little brother, to be more exact my little brothers friends. It started with my brother having a (so called)friend over who had a mate with him as well, my younger brother then got an ex-mate to come round and drop off a pack of ciggys that he'd left in his car at an earlier date. My brothers mates decided to 'jump' my brothers ex-mate(David) for everything he had(head unit, cellphone, wallet, some clothes, etc etc), they took some of the stuff that belonged to the other people in davids car, they did this while my brother was somewhere else on the property(so he says) and then they all ran off(my brother included). Then I get a phone call from David while my brother was still out, saying that if my brother didnt give back his stuff he'd kill him. When my brother arrived home he read me some of the txts in which David and his various 'boys' had sent him threatening him and my home and family. A while later while we were sitting in the lounge discussing the days event we heard a noise on the roof, so I proceeded to get the steel bar(yes i am paranoid when it comes to security) from my bedroom and patrol the house with my brother. I told my mother to stay in the kitchen and I went upstairs to my sisters room to grab her(she was fast asleep) and put her in the kitchen and make sure all the door and windows were locked. When my family was safely in the kitchen(I chose it as it is a central place) It seemed to be all clear for several minutes so my sister went back to bed, it was a couple of minutes after she had gone to bed when the sound of movement on the roof began, at that stage I had worked out where about on the roof it was coming from, it seemed to be coming from outside my sisters bedroom. me and my brother then went upstairs to her room to find her sitting there crying and shaking unable to move because of the sound coming from outside her window. I pulled her out of her room and made my brother take her to the kitchen, I opened the curtain and told the little shit(wearing a hoodie and cut off denim shorts) that was trying to hide, to get the f*ck of the property and that the police had been called(ironically it was my younger brother who called them). It was at that stage he got up and attempted to scuttle off, I followed the sounds of his movement until I heard him run off up the driveway. My brother spent the next 20mins on the phone to the police while a car was on its way.
About 30mins after my brother had initially called the police, an officer turned up saying that they'd caught the person whom had been on our roof and asked if we wanted him arrested, my mother being the kind soul that she is said no(I would have said yes) , but told the police officer to tell him to keep off of the property. I will be on high alert over the next couple of days as, one of the threats that my brother recieved involved our house being trashed or 'done over', this is not good as i have my bike parked downstairs and I really dont want to come home to find it on its side with slashed tyres or even worse to come home to find it not there. Ive just started a new job so I cant stay at home all day to ensure its security. I seriously doubt I will see much sleep tonight if any, to make sure that nothing happens to my family and home.
