View Full Version : Wolf Down - "binned and pinned"
Wolf
15th February 2007, 07:56
Yep, it had to happen. My own fault. My own stupid fault.
And of course, it's the curse of commuting to work - you're most likely to go down on familiar ground close to home. In this case, literally within 2 metres of my front door.
Fortunately it was at low speed - less than my usual walking pace, actually.
And while going backwards.
I was walking beside the bike, backing it out into the driveway and caught my heel on the bottom step - entirely my fault, I failed to check my blind spot - so down I went. Wound up with the bike lying on both my legs.
Damned good thing I was wearing my helmet - it was on my right elbow at the time.
Also a damned good thing I've got a little XT225 and not a Harley or I'd still be pinned under the damned thing.
So, pay extra care in familiar territory and always check your blind spot...

Stink one, hope there's not too much damage. In our flat we have to do a speedo run if you drop your bike so we're all extra careful already

Stink to hear that dude. I've almost done the same thing backing out of the garage. I think I'd be a bit squished if I made the same error.

Injuries? Only the ego - both my boys were watching through the window.
Toaster, you must be a pretty big lad if you'd only be "a bit" squished by a Boulevard - I'd probably be puree.

Sorry, 'bout that, dude. I'll buy you a beer when I next see you.

Yep, me too MSTRS. Glad it wasn't as bad as the title made out! Wasn't really a 'bin' but a 'drop.' Any damage to you or the bike? And since I'm assuming your skid lid hit the deck fairly firmly... I take it you'll be replacing it as well? Still, lesson learned, shame it had to be the hard way.
Bugger, "must spread more rep around" etc.
I blinged him for you... though, having said that, I wouldn't give as many "bling points." Sorry MSTRS. :(

Glad nothing was hurt but your ego, and I hope that this is the only post like this you ever have to make.
That title is very misleading mate!

Apologies, the thread was supposed to be somewhat of a piss-take - poking a bit of fun at myself for my own carelessness.
Apologies to those who saw it and were concerned that it was a serious accident.

Ah, so that's why I hurt my elbow when I did something similar years ago - I was foolishly wearing my helmet on my HEAD!!!
Glad it was a little case of 'oops' rather than a big case of 'oh shit!'
Wolf
15th February 2007, 08:42
Oh yeah, the helmet - I didn't even bang it on the step, fortunately.
I went down fairly slowly and was able to take care I didn't hit the helmet on anything - I think that having recently bought it tends to focus the mind somewhat.

LOL - did that with the RF... backing down a drive (engine off... and no chance of moving it forward...) and the back wheel clipped a bit of firewood lying on the drive...
Going... LEFT! Only think I could do was leap clear and enjoy those delicate sounds of plastic scraping (and things not breaking!!! Fucken strong mirrors the RF...). Wish I'd had your bike I would have been able to hold it up.
Glad you're intact - the title had me thinking.

Shit in hell, Wolf, you had me worried when I come online just now and find your thread on the first page....
Glad you are ok..... and its just your ego that has been hurt.
Hope you went and told your boys, that is how NOT to reverse a bike out....

It could be worse.....

Yeah fortunately I cushioned the bike's fall, kept my helmet clear of anything and the worst damage (aside from the cubs seeing that their father is a dick) was being slightly puffed from struggling out from under the thing and getting it back on its wheels.
Damned good thing it wasn't my old CB550! I still remember dropping that bugger and all I can say is I'm glad I didn't get even one leg pinned under it.
Don't apologise for laughing - this thread was supposed to be a laugh at my expense.
Definitely liked Motu's advice...

And there I was worried about another expensive case to push up our ACC levies!
Wolf- make sure you coordinate your handbag and high heels though with your helmet colour.
Go all the way and really embarrass yourself and tell us how many people it took to help you lift the bike up.
Wolf
15th February 2007, 11:39
Don't worry, MD, I only ever buy black - goes with everything.
Including concrete driveways, it would seem.

Actually, the mental image I had was of Jumma and his flatties dashing up the road wearing budgie-smugglers.

Hmm glad you are ok. :sunny:
I had my first off a couple of weeks ago. Tried to turn my bike backwards out of a friends driveway while sitting on it. I think my foot slipped on some stones and then in slowmotion (really was) I dropped my bike carefully to the ground and rolled over on the concrete a couple of times I think... cant remember I was too shook up. On a good note, my buddy rescued my bike... no injuries where sustained in my accident.
Wolf
15th February 2007, 12:15
Slippery surfaces are a curse. The only time I dropped my monstrosity of a CB550 was due in part to a slippery surface (and in part to the fact I'm such a short-arse I only could get the tips of my toes on the road) - fully stopped, both feet at tip-toe, slightly wet road --> right foot skating out from under me, bike going down and me doing the splits of the top of it. Had a hell of a job getting the heavy bike back on its wheels toute seule. ("On me Todd," for the less pretentious ones out there.)
Have I ever mentioned how much I love how light the XT225 is?

If only all our bins/drops/accidents were like this  Riding bikes is always a humbling/humiliating experience when things go pear-shape and only results in a loss to eo, pride, dignity and vanity! :o
Won't be the first time it's ever happened, nor will it be the last time - just make sure you aren't around when it does! :msn-wink:

Good to hear that it wasn't anything major.. A lesson learnt though.. I've nearly been there a few times, but managed to save it. Kinda take a few things for granted though.. and carelessness creeps in and bites ya butt to remind ya not to take anything for granted.. i.e. reversing the bike out/into garage etc.
Just aslong as you explained to your cubs how this occurred, why it occurred, and how to avoid it in future =)

Dang, sorry to hear that! So I gather that both you and the bike were saved from damage? The ol' backwards thing isn't as easy as we'd like to think. I've had a few close calls myself. I've found the old beastie is a bit diffcult to back up once cornered on an incline (of almost any gradient!).

Good stuff, good to see you had a luagh about it - life is too short and precious not to see the funny side!
I've found the odd loose stone or two can really catch you out when moving the bike about. In my case, an ocean going tug would be helpful.

I agree. If Wolf can't so much as back his bike (or himself for that matter) out a driveway then it's high time he handed the keys over, it might be safer than him dropping the poor bike. Wolf only hurt his ego but imagine how the poor bike feels!!!
Every morning I say to Wolf "ride safely" maybe now I should say "step safely" :dodge:

Bad luck Dude. I wasn't at all afraid of the Title, cos I don't know ya, and I figured you were well enough to post the story!! lol (sorry!)
It's never too late to learn something, - ie I'm super careful about the slow stuff, - heard/seen too many stories, but alas, as I was backing the ST13 out of a parking space (car park) while straddling her (the bike), my left foot hit some oil, and..................................nearly bloody lost it, blooooody lucky, - phew!
Oh, sorry, nearly forgot your prescription: Take 18 cold Heinies and call me in the morning" Dr Shafty

The old "if it were serious it'd be someone else starting the thread" theory of damage assessment, huh?
After work the kids showed me the proper way to reverse a bike - their little electric toy bike has a reverse switch.
It also has training wheels, so I don't think I like what they were implying...
