Hello there...
Yup you probably figured it out already I'm french ( and I'm sure you will figure it out while reading my post as my english isn't so good :/ )
So yeah French but coming from the Pacific Island, New Caledonia to be specific.
Ok, a friend of mine ( biker ) gave me the link to kiwibiker telling me that it is a great place... Looks like :)
So for my first post I have couple of questions.
The thing is I don't have my driving licence yet ( I've started doing it before coming to Nz so 1.5 year ago but had to stop as I've moved here ) and I was wondering where to go. The place you will recommend to get my license.
And could anyone explain me how it works here to get your motorbike license. It seems really different from Europe. I know that I have to start with a 250cc for some times... Anyway if someone feel explaining me the whole process it could be great
And finally where I could find a bike ( I've look on trademe for 250cc but nothing good so far ).
Hopefully that soon I'll be able to participate to events around here...
Btw I'm living Auckland, Onehunga...
Thx much

Hi Xile,
I'm in New Zealand and Auckland since August 2005.
I didn't really drove bikes, just the ones of the school. I was ready for the test, but had to come to nz before... That suck :/
Otherwise, I've seen everyone was really enthusiastic with your post...
Not with mine :/ I think it's because of the little icons next to my name... that doesn't look like the one next to yours ;)

Welcome to KB!
To get your learners license you need to pass a 'basic handling test' which costs about $60 (i think), this allows you to go to your local AA centre and sit a written theory test, pass an eye exam and have your photo taken. You will then be issued with your learners license.
And finally where I could find a bike ( I've look on trademe for 250cc but nothing good so far ).
Trademe is a great place to start looking for your first bike, you may also wish to look at the 'online trading' section of this website HERE (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=18)
How much are you looking to spend? Sports bike, cruiser?

Hey there.
Welcome to KB. I sat my car test in Howick many years ago, nice area to sit your practical test in. As I remember it was either Howick or Manukau that I could book into for the test way back then.
I'm off to New Caledonia next month for work (bugger). Are there bike or scooter rental places there that you know of? I'm looking forward to doing some exploring.

Hello there...
Thx for the answers...
How much am I willing to spend? I dunno actually. I think I'm looking for a cheap bike as it will be my first one ( so it will probably get scratches ). Then I'll look for something better. Type of bikes? I dunno neither. I guess I should try some to know which one fits me the most ( I'm 1.92m tall )
There is a bike that I really like thought but it will not be for now.
This bike is the superduke like this one:
http://www.ktm.co.nz/bike.php?bike=54&PHPSESSID=bee3dc32cb22fcf7af4ab55fddf7d9a6
But it will be in a year and a half or so... :/ and maybe meanwhile I'll changed my mind... :)
For bikes in New Caledonia yes, there is places you can rent scooter. I'm not sure about motorcycle but I think you should be able to find some...
If you need addresses I could look for you...
C ya.

Yes, welcome. Finding the type of bike that suits you early on is a good thing. Try a few different types, the one that looks like it is for you may not be when you are behind the handle bars (or clip-ons, heh)
Some people find cruisers with your feet forward the right thing, some like the tour 'sit up and beg' postion most natural, and some weirdos like to be folded up like a pretzle
Good luck anyway :sunny:
