Retouching cars - what do you reckon about this...

Well, way back in the day I was a retoucher for McCann's working on Holden cars.

Haven't done it for a while since I moved up the ladder into management, but an opportunity came up to have a bit of fun, it was nice to get back in the saddle.

A mate of mine has a venture starting up selling replica Series 1 Sevens to the Japanese market.

Well, his first cars are in production and he wanted something for an early brochure (he's a creative director in his first job) so asked me to do some work modifying an outside picture he had into a studio shot.

I've included a before and after shot.

While it is a bloody good effort, i don't know if you still 'have it'.
Mind due you still about 1,000,000 better than me.
Points i noticed was the sides of the nose are still chrome.
Any chance of doing one in British racing green?

Not chrome; never was.

The brief was to replicate brushed aluminium for the fenders and side panels, and front of nose, and mild steel for the nose behind the front piece.

As for BRG, that's too easy. You try airbrushing brushed aluminium.

BTW, I forgot to mention. Budget on this retouch was $200. That makes it a lot harder.

And the original was a scan from an old magazine. So I've had to fix up all those lovely little rosette patterns too...

BTW client was ecstatic. Only requested change was to add more tyre black to the tyres.

Is he going to make them,or rebuild used ones? He will gut the local market in used seven replicas then if he does the rebuild bit.I have a couple of nice motors looking for a project.I need to find an old genuine 7 that's been sitting in a barn for 40 years that I can buy for $200 and drop a twin turbo 300ZX motor into.....

7s are on my top-10 must-own-before-I-die list. An original, though, not a replica, or even one of the Caterhams, which have been modified a fair bit from the original.

The 60s Élan is on that list, too. Best handling convertible ever?
