Suction in that there is snow on the shaded side therefore colder than the other - cold air drops, hot air rises.
This one's the Bingham mine in the States.

SUCTION: Is really a misnomer:
If you imagine standing on the earths surface you have ( allowing for elevation) approx 14.7 lbs per sq inch, of air pressure do to the column of air directly above you, IE: 1 sq inch from the surface,to approx 36090 ft( theoretical airless level)
As the hole is surrounded by a surface, with the air above at 14.7 lb's per sq inch.
In the middle you have a hole(a big hole)the column of air is extended from the bottom of the hole to the same theoretical upper level.
Hence the weight of air above the hole weighs more than the surrounding air:
Air moves from high pressure to low pressure, so you are always going to have a vertical vortex type of thing:
Add into this any wind blowing across the hole and it will compound the matter considerably.
As for the runway, it is not a problem as approaches to that end are conducted obliquely, you can also play with your touchdown zone as it is a long runway.
