View Full Version : Should I sell Uma?

I've been clearing out my shed and I've been wondering what to do with "Uma", my 1963 Yamaha YG-1.
She's all complete and runs, just in dire need of a good restoration.
I've had her for about 8 years now and haven't done anything with her.
I just don't know if I will have any regrets or not if I sell her as the YG's are very rare now.
What ya think?

I had an old mark 2 escort that I learnt to drive in, and when I sold it... I didn't think anything of it. It was $800 in my pocket. Now... no amount of money in the world would make me sell that car again. My advice.. is keep it, resotre it, ride it :D

Good reply. I am leaning more towards keeping her.

either keep her and do her up, or sell her to someone who will do her up. if i had the cash and know-how, id make an offer. would hate to see an old lady be destroyed.

If you dont need to sell it definetly hold on to her.
There are many reasons for selling but for the sake of a small amout of space in the shed and a few extra dollars in the bank now I would hang on to it even if I didnt have the time and cash to spend on it now.
Ive got a 1964 English assembled Triumph Herald in my shed that has been in my family since new & needs some (read lots) work but Im hanging on to it for the above reasons. Oh I have promised my oldest daughter she can have it for a 21st present so that gives me a few years to get it sorted.
I think you would regret it if you sold it now

Okay...I think I will keep her.
We have a good painter in our fraternity who can do good cheap paintjobs to give her a new lease of life, plus, I know a thing or two about polishing....
If/when she gets restored, can I register Uma under the classic rego (the 40 year old + ) one?

Glad you're keeping her -- how'd she get the name `Uma'? I take it if you got her 8 years ago, she's not your first bike, but why'd you get her? Not surprised you did, such a pretty little thing.

Her old number plate was "99UMA" so the name just fitted her perfectly. Classical ladies name for a classic bike.
A friend and I bought her at a wreckers auction for $80, actually it was more like 10-12 years I've had her now.
At the time, I also bought a 1963 Honda C-110 (which is a motorcycle 50cc pushrod-engined version of the stepthru) which I got rid of for some obscure reason.

Keep it and do it up or you could sell it to me and I'll do it up. I'm looking for a winter project :scooter:
Here is a pic of my last restoration project a Z1A http://s130.photobucket.com/albums/p249/theplayers_photos/Bikes/
I had to sell her (and the Bonny) to pay for my emigration costs to NZ, I wish i'd sold something else now and bought her with me.

Now that you have reminded me, your quite right. However alot of shite has flowed out since then, so you'll have to forgive me for forgetting that other particular pearl of wisdom.

WOW !!! That Z1A is BEAUTIFUL !!!!! (and the Bonny too of course ;) )
T.W.R. will be orgasming !!!
Vintage Yamaha parts are very hard to come by these days, but I guess not impossible.
I once had an opportunity on buying a YDS-3 to restore but passed because I thought the parts would be too difficult to get....
Glad your keeping her, keep us updated on the repairs!
Certainly will :)

Nah she will be as original as I can get her, within parts availability constraints.

No, not me I've built enough buckets in the past.
This one is going to be practically like Yamaha-San designed it.
The only mods I do have on it is YL-1 front forks, rear suspension and exhaust. I did this a long time ago as when I got it, the original muffler had rusted out and I had a pile of YL-1 bits lying around.

Not at all,but I have seen it so many times, where a car or bike, gets sold & turns up matt black or pink with some big exhaust hanging out the back of it

They're a hard case thing to ride.
You have to start them in neutral as they're a non-primary kick and pulling in the clutch disengages the kickstart drive !!
Then the gear box is 4-down with neutral at the top and what seems to be a neutral between every gear so changing gear is done sloooowwwly.
The front and rear suspension seems to have no damping whatsover so she's bouncy as heck.
Full of character !!
How could I even think I was thinking of getting rid of it...shame on me ! :nono: :spanking:

My restoration project, once I've finished doing up the DR-250S, is going to be "Uma", my 1963 Yamaha YG-1. As parts are virtually non-existent nowadays, I'm going to transform her into a period sporty YG, ie flat bars, single seat which leather is domed etc sort of like Suzuki did with the K11 (as pictured here), forerunner to the A100 or I think B120, but keep all of the original equipment.
She'll be an awesome weapon then
Like this YGS-1 ? I had a YL1 at the time.

You will have to let me know how you go as my Mum has hers in the garage still. Been locked away for 25 year so far! I think it only has 1600km so far! I know it goes as I took it for a spin a few years back. I agree with the fun bouncy ride!
Maybe I should try and fix her up??

Just like it, but with the low exhaust.
Also had a couple of YL-1's before, great bikes !!
