the Missus has put her foot down...!:

Only her second ride with me since finally getting her back on pillion after 30 years and she says she's not coming with me again!:bye:

.....until I get a bigger bike....

The 600 hardly notices her on the back but she reckons it's too cramped and uncomfortable for any distance work. Especially as she has now had a go on a mates C90T and on Sunday hitched a ride to the races on a Valkyrie! Bliss for her bum, she reckoned!

Now you may say she just needs to get used to it again and harden up a bit, but she's not as young as she was..:dodge: and wants comfort over performance these days, so as upset as I am at having to buy a new bike...:innocent:  it looks like a cruiser is on the shopping list.

A mate of my Bro-in-Law has a tidy "98 1400 Intruder which he wants to sell in a month or so to buy a Harley now that my said Bro-in-Law and his brother have a Softail each. It's only got 18,000km on it and he's only talking around $7k for it. The pic shows it's a nice colour and the wife sat on it and pronounced it quite comfy!

Otherwise was thinking a new VTX1300 or C90. I like the big nakeds, esp the CB1300 and GSX1400 but she's sold on cruisers and if iMama's happy then I'm gonna be happy, eh?

So if anyone is thinking along the lines of a GSX600F, I will reluctantly sell it as, "No you can't keep it and have a cruiser as well!" Got too many vehicles to fit in the garage as it is and Rego/Ins etc. adds up! The 600 has just clicked over 42k and is in tidy nick though could do with a new chain about now. I'll put it on the bike trader section.

PS. Paeroa was fantastic! But had to call a locksmith as I broke the key and of course I have a spare for every vehicle except...:third:

Yeah, that's option 2! Maybe a bit further down the track? She'd like one but for long distance likes to be pillion as our friends' all ride two-up. I like having her on the back, too, she's a great pillion!

Mine said the same. Actually, I'm with her on that as the VFR is a bloody cramped wee thing for me on the front. Before you settle down to cruiserdom try some of the dual sports bikes like TDM's and DL650's/1000's. Armchair like comfort, good fairings, handle OK and a good turn of speed. The nekkid retro's like the ZRX1100's also look quite comfy. Most important thing for the pillions is the seat to peg height. You can always add hand-guards and padding to a seat.

Hi, I am interested in the Intruder if you don't want it. I have had one before and wish I hadn't sold it. You should note that unless you and your young lady are small the intruder may be a bit tight two up because they are not a large bike ergonomically, plus the range is not great as the tank is small. but I liked it for the occassional cruise by myself. You can PM me. thx. tim.

[QUOTE=scracha;942440] Most important thing for the pillions is the seat to peg height. QUOTE]

Definitely important, and my test pillion pronounced the Hornet as being the most comfortable compared to VTR, CB1300, Blackbird, CBR1000RR. Her preference apparently largely attributed to the leg room.

The CB1300 is more cramped because of the location of the exhast pipe, the Blackbird is probably similar.

Her second choice was the VFR.

The Goldwing was more comfortable but not to her liking and she hasn't tried the STX.

And the bad news is......:innocent:

There are heaps of other very comfy options out there if you don't want a cruiser. Just test ride a few with her on the back to widen the range of choices.
A lot of BMW & Guzzi (lemans, stones & Cali) pillions I know rave about their comfy rides.

My wife thought the VTR was OK until we test-rode the VFR, when she coerced me into buying it!
She finds it OK, comfort-wise, but any discomfort is an excuse to stop for a break, have a coffee, take photos, that sort of thing. For her, the journey's a much less important thing than where we're going, what we see/do on the way, and spending quality time with me.
That reminds me - we haven't been on a ride since last Easter. Must pull my finger out and organise summat...

I think the key is to look at the seat size and shape, and the relationship between the seat and pillion footpegs.
I know cruisers have comfy seats, but it seems a bit crazy buying a bike just for that reason, when you can get the seat customised for $500. As long as the footpegs aren't too high/close to the seat, then you should be able to find a 'standard', sportsbike or sport-tourer that isn't a pain in the arse for Her Highness.

I'll let you know, Tim. The Intruder is very tidy and may be what we want.

I hear you all, and yes, I love the big nakeds, but I don't mind cruisers as all bar two of our friends ride them. I'm going to look at the VTX and Boulevard if we can swing the dollars to a new bike, but probably get the Intruder if we like it after a ride.

I suggested the nakeds but she "really likes the cruisers... ", so, as I said, "If Mama happy I gonna be happy..." Now we've got a common interest again after seeing the kids all grown up I really want to get us out and about together again, and I'm rapt she's back enjoying biking with our friends. Was a bit concerned as to what we were going to do after our youngest got married last July and we became "Darby and Joan", so the weekend to Paeroa was a bit of a feeler to see how she'd go.

Sorry, DiscoDan, got no parts but you could buy the bike and strip it...:innocent: Looks like I won't be needing that sheepskin after all. We tried extra padding, but still not enough for her. Must be a Princess, eh?

Vifferman I hear you, too! We still stop often enough when with the others, but I like all bikes, including cruisers, - just like biking in general I guess - and am really enjoying having her with me, and I guess that's the most important thing.

If you're heading for cruiserdom and definitely want that comfy pillion perch, it is hard to beat the Valkyrie. Most cruisers have anal floss for a rear seat and you'd need an aftermarket seat to make the wife happy. The Valkyrie's engine is an absolute peach and people turn around looking for a Porsche only to see some desperate Dan with his Bitch on the back of a rolling chrome-fest with real performance.

I've pillioned on a VS1400 and I think it's called an Intruder because of what that seat does to the pillion after an hour.

timorang

Thanks Edbear, I was serious re the Intruders suitability as a pillion machine (ie not just because I am interested in buying it). I now have a Honda 900 Hornet and although the std seat is a little 'sharp' it is a far better 2-up machine than the Intruder ever was or could be, from both rider and pillion perpectives and a sheepskin makes it even better. I may hear from you or your buddy.......

It's funny you should say that. There's an Intruder parked near my workplace, and every time I go past it, I'm tempted to right "ANAL" above the tank badge.

Thanks for the feedback, Jim2. The Intruder wasn't my first thought either, as I was concerned about the pillion comfort, hence the need to ride one first. I agree about the Valkyrie! I love them, but not sure about the dollars...

Had an interesting chat to the Bank today, well okay not the Bank itself but our Mortgage manager and turns out we can rearrange things, get a new bike and still pay less than we're currently paying out on the credit card!:gob: Why didn't someone ring us and tell us that ages ago? Okay, I know, it pays to keep up with financial matters and ask questions about banking and insurance frequently... Don't ask, don't get!:bye:

So the big job now is to test ride a few bikes and see if my initial preferences are correct. Tim, I'll keep in touch with my Bro-in-Law and his mate about the Intruder, he said he'd be ready to sell in about a month or two, all going to plan.

DiscoDan, after thirty years, I don't think she's still under warrranty, so can't send her back! 'Sides, like an old cardy she's got quite comfy over the years...:scooter:

Well, when I told her about my chat with the Bank, she seemed quite pleased so maybe I can convince her to try out the GSX1400 before we decide. The current Summerfest promo makes it very attractive, (in more ways than one...)

Yeah, they look good but wasn't too fussed on spokes. 60kg lighter than the C90 and plenty of grunt from the 800, fuel injected, liquid cooled which is better for getting stuck in traffic, the GSX has got very hot at times!

They're basically an update of the Volusia and every time the Volusia is mentioned, the owners seem to be very loyal to them. I'm going to ride the VTX1300 today but haven't been offered anything special pricewise on one. The dealer came straight out with a price for the C50T which made my jaw drop! Maybe as he's a customer of mine as well, not sure, but it was $1000 better than I was planning to negotiate for!

My GSX sold last night on TradeMe. Only listed it before I went to bed, got up this morning and someone had hit the "Buy Now" price! Ringing him today. Of course the Missus says, "I told you it was too cheap!"

At our stage in life we're right onto fun! Had a great weekend! She's so far tried out the C90T, a Softail and a Valkyrie and reckons the C90T was the best! Hi Edbear, the 800 cc Suzuki v-twin is a sweet little engine and the shaft drive is good, but for pillioning I think you will find it lacking (I have had one albeit in the VX800) and you will be wanting more in a short time. I also had an older vs700, loved the motor, fine for tootling around solo. Also small range tank and luggage options are limited. This bike is even smaller than the 'big' brother 1400 (s83 - intruder) which I think has ergonomics that are too tight for lots of two up work - but it does the grunt. If it is an affordable Jap cruiser you want then I think the c90 (maybe your contact can do a sweet a deal on one for you), and Honda VTX1300 are best value options. My opinion for what it is worth.

Well done on the sale of your bike.

In a recent Bike magazine readers poll - the XJR1300 was voted 3rd for the most comfortable pillion seat of the 100 bikes voted on!
If its pillion comfort and rideability you want, plus a large dose of fun, go for the GSX/XJR/ZXR 12-13-1400 style of bike.

Edbear
21st February 2007, 21:04
Well, I went for a ride on the VTX1300 today and I was very disappointed! Looks good, sounds great, handles well, goes pretty hard! So what was the disappointment?

The ride! Felt like it had square wheels! My GSX is a Cadillac compared to the VTX! By the time I'd gone 2km I just wanted to get off!:gob: The hard, choppy ride and the pitching, (Woodcocks Rd. Warkworth), was a complete surprise and I couldn't believe it! It absorbed the big bumps well, but I felt the jarring of every litte bump and imperfection in the road!

When I told the Salesman he was "amazed! I've NEVER heard that criticism of the VTX and they sell well!" He said he'd have to go for a ride himself to confirm and suggested I pop into Cyclespot and ride the second hand one in there with a few K's up to see if it was better.

Oh, well, back to the drawing board! I'm trying to get a hold of a C50T to demo, I think the C90T is a bit out of our reach new, but maybe a near-new one could turn up.

I personally like the V-Strom but would have to convince the Missus to try a few different bikes out as she's pretty much settled on a cruiser. After riding the VTX, despite it's shortcomings, I think I could be quite happy with a cruiser as it handled much better and went much better power-wise than I expected. Funds are limited to about $15-$16k max.

Appreciate all your input!

The earlier incarnation of the C90 is the VL1500. I don't know what (if any) differences there are - carbs verses EFI perhaps? The VL1500 was first introduced in 1998 (or thereabouts). I imagine a good one could be picked-up for considerably less than a new C50.

Edbear
22nd February 2007, 06:31
Yeah, my only question over the older VL is that they're carburreted and with only a 15lt tank may have limited range. My Bro-in-Law and a mate have the new C90 and C90T with the fuel injection and they're getting good range from them. May be a near new C90T comes up.

Hopefully I can find a demo C50T to ride. Had a squizz on the net and all owners reports are very complimentary about comfort and performance. The Salesman did point out the 60kg weight difference making up for the fewer cubes and I know the 800 v-twin is the gruntiest of the middleweights, or was until the Kwaka 900 came along. May still have the edge even so.

Hi Ed, great to hear you're looking after the misses so well mate!
I reckon you should get her onto the Vstrom for a test, my wife said it was the most comfortable seat she had been on as a pillion, and they are great bikes.
The only issue I had with the c50 I rode was that it lacked a little ground clearance from what I expected. The Vulcan is also supposed to be a really comfy ride for a pillion but I have not ridden one personally.
Best of luck to you both.

Thanks, Mack! Yeah I like the V-strom and hope to try one out. I found a near new C50T on TradeMe locally so he's bringing it around this evening and we'll have a ride on it. Should let us know pretty quick if it will suit us.

I know ground clearance will not match the GSX-F but the VTX I rode was much better than I thought it would be and I could hussle it around the corners quite well. The trip to Paeroa was in company with a C90, two Softails, the Intruder 1400, an old 1100 Shadow and the Valkyrie and believe me, those guys were'nt hanging about! I was impressed with their verve through the twisty bits! Wasn't until we turned down Canal East Rd from Waitakaruru that I got away clean... :innocent: The Valkyrie nearly caught up but a little more squirt on the GSX and...

Ta for dat, timorang! Might take one for a blat, but I have to say the guy with the C50T popped around this evening and me and the Missus took it for a ride. I loved it! Smooth-as compared with the VTX and plenty of grunt! Didn't seem to notice we were two-up and although I tried to find every bump I could, (had to see if the wife noticed them of course...:innocent: ), it was lotsa fun!

Had standard pipes and they sounded loud and meaty, had to ask if they were aftermarket but he said they were stock! All the extras and looks cool in the gunmetal grey! Gonna have a debrief with her good self now and see what she thought. The Suzuki dealer rang back tonight to say he wasn't able to find a new demo bike but I told him we were trying out this '06 model and would let him know how we liked it. He then informs me that as part of the Summerfest promo, I'd also get a Boulevard leather jacket worth about $300 or so! Gotta say, after the ride tonight, I's very tempted...

Now, if I do go ahead and get the new one, do I get the jacket in my size or the Missus' size...? Mmmm maybe ask how much extra for one each... :done:

When I was younger - a few mates and I undone some of the seat stitching on our old British bikes, cut a grove out of the padding and inserted a cut off piece of broom handle in the centre of where a pillion would sit, covered it over with a small amount of padding, stitched the seat back up. Those old bikes use to thump along and vibrate a lot – that was the concept anyway.

I don’t know if it was imagination - but the girls seem to like being two up a lot more than they use too. I’m not sure if it was because we were more expectant or if it worked – but we got more action.

Edbear, here is your v-strom. Apart from the looks there is hardly a bad word said about them. With all the kit this should be good value at <10k (18k replpacement for new one in Colemans with all the luggage - saw it today)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that the 02 V-stroms didn't have adjustable front suspension and they are renowned for having clutch basket failures. Apparently 04 onwards are the best ones.

Tell him you need 2 jackets and he has a deal - the worst he can say is no, or let you have it at cost ($150?).

Yo' right! I rang him this morning and he asked how we liked the bike. I said we loved it and of course his next question was, "So when do you want to pick up your new one?" I quipped back, "This afternoon okay?" There was a short pause, I don't think he quite expected that!:gob:

He said he'd see what he could do about the extra jacket and when I got there to collect the bike they said they couldn't do the second one free but would find out the cost price and let me take it at that. The jackets should be there early next week. Kay said they were retailing at about $350.
The price he did me the bike for was such that I would have paid for the jacket anyway. Let's just say big ups to Matthew at Bikesport Helensville for the price and the service - getting it ready at short notice when they were VERY busy setting up for the A&P Show tomorrow!:2thumbsup

So what am I saying? Yep! I got me a new C50T Boulevard and rode it home this evening! Now has a massive 45.5km on the odo! I'm still in a state of dreaming! The Missus is rapt and looking forward to riding!

The neighbour is in a high state of jealousy and I think he's gone home to scheme...:innocent:
