Um, first time posting I know... but I am a sound engineer by trade and in my opinion having ear plugs that play from an iPod defeats the purpose of having hearing protection.

If you want good ear plugs, get HearSavers. They make custom fitted, molded to your ear canal, ear plugs for various industries. I of course have ones for live sound mixing which allows me to work long hours in loud noise but not have a muffled representation of what comes out of the speakers. They make many different products, and you can get them in different ratings (I believe mine are a minus 15db rating)

In a way yes but which option is better:

1. Ipod cranked to full blast to overcome the wind and bike noise
2. Ipod at low/moderate volume

Uh, what is the point in your statement?

Either is damaging. Ear plugs go in the ear canal (if you are actually wearing them properly - lifting the pinna up and inserting with a rotating motion into the canal). Having music playing that directly to your timpanic membrane does damage regardless.

Cranked loud to overcome wind and noise is just exchanging aggressors of the ear.

Got me some from Mitre 10. Dozen for $4.85. minus 28 db. Bloody works too.

You're one of those "it's bad to listen to music while riding" people arn't you...

Cool man.

The reason why I mentioned the custom made ones is because ear plugs you get from Mitre 10 etc tend to cut the high frequencies and you have sort of a muffled ability of hearing. The custom have close to a flat response in dampening.. it just makes things quieter, not muffled. I can be hard to even know you have them in because must of us are used to muffled ear plug sound. Put them in for a few hours, and then take them out and you'll be like WHOA.. there is a difference but I didn't notice.

Oh, and 28db is massive. I used 15-20 db ones for rock concerts hitting 110-120dbSPL. 28db will kill nearly all sound wouldn't it?

Sure does. Sometimes the sound of my gixxer scares me when revving over 10,000.
