Now im going to be doing a top end rebuild next weekend and i wondered if we have enough RG owners in club 250 who would want me to take pics and do a write up if they are thinking about doing it themselves?

To be honest i dont know if i can be bothered stopping and taking photos as i go along and also this is a relativly easy task plus there is a workshop manual floating around on the site .

Let me know your thoughts.

Id definitely appreciate it if you did that seeing my bike is pretty much the same and is bound to need a top end one day. If its too much hassle I wouldnt worry though :yes:

Step 1 .
Get some tools and parts .

Parts required:
Piston
Piston pin
Piston circlips (2)
Piston rings (not shown)
Small end bearing & washers
base gasket
top gasket (not shown)
exhaust gasket (ring)
Powervalve seal

Tools required:
Torque wrench
8 , 10 , 12 , 14 mm spanners / 8-14mm sockets & extensions
These will be your workhorse tools most often used .
There is more you will need but i hav'nt started yet so will edit the list once finished.

Cheers mate , i was gona take you up on that offer but im not sure what condition the engine is in - dont wont the RG cluttering up ye garage if theres a problem with the rod small end or something etc .

Posting pics for the time being , its harder than i thought to take pics/write notes as you
go along - especially once you get stuck into it. Will see at the end if i have taken enough photos
and notes to do the proper write up as intended.

1. fairings/seats/tank off and coolant drained.
2. top part of the barrel (head) , 3. head removed showing the top of the piston .
4 . underside of the head , still clean from the last time i de-carboned it.
5 . barrel off , ready to be cleaned ,inspected , gasket surfaces sanded and p/v's removed
6. Mr piston .

In these pictures you can see the powervalves disassembled ready to be cleaned,new p/v springs/retaining clip and screws. The last is the p/v's reassembled in the barrel ready to go back on.

Very easy to do all this. I didn't even use the manual. Don't know about torque settings so I just tightened the head till there was no water coming from the water-cooling ducts and going into the cylinder :p

And I'm looking at doing it for the second bike. Where was the piston and ring kit from? I saw one on trademe the other day and it's gone now, you take that?

Awesome. How much was the piston and ring kit?

Yeah, I would've done the torque settings if 1: I had the tools and the information on settings 2: The bike wasn't already so ratty.

I didn't record at what K's I did the piston and ring, but I must've done about 5000k's, including rides where it's sitting at full throttle 95% of the time in top gear. I'm getting no greif from there, it runs great. Gearbox is starting to get a bit clunky (well... clunkier than before)

Took the RG out for a gentle cruise to misson bay and back to pt chev beach with some fluctuating throttle. Will give it a week or too of the same whilst commuting to let things settle in . Even at low revs i stayed in it feels like a different bike , well worth the effort. Cant wait to thrash the shite out of it .
