View Full Version : OOPS, over she went

Took the new, (read, bloody old crapper,) FZR 400 to a mates place tonight. What a fuckin larf it is to ride. On the way home, Flame and I had a big section of motorway to ourselves, so I slowed right down and did a couple good wheelies, Flame caught up, and hoisted the Buell past me, (very cool!) soooo, I thought, nah girl, this how it's done, and... oooohhh FUCK! Maybe this aint how it's done. Flame never even saw it, cos she carried off into the distance practicing her technique, totally oblivious to my bruised arse, and our scratched up fighter.:bye:
Well, an ambulance with a lovely lady flicks her lights on and pulls over, oh fuck, she'll be onto the cops, wonder if this thing'll go??? Had to push start it, cos the start button aint workin, but away it went, and away I went:innocent:
Moral is, if your lady wheelies past ya, APPRECIATE her efforts, and dont try upstage her!!!!
Bike is sweet, tail light lense, and another numberplate, (not to worry, the plate was off a CX 500 that the last guy owned, and he dont know who the hell I am:shifty: ) Biggest regret, NO ONE SAW IT!!!! Oh, and I need to straighten me new bars.
For those who might see this as dangerous and irresponsable behavour, my only defence, is that the bike is only doin 20k's when it comes up, and I was on a deserted road.
I've got the bits to fix it at home, so she'll be up on one again in no time. I'll post some pics of it if I can find a camera jokey.

Bummer mate! Good thing there's not much damage to the bike, or you, apart from your bruised arse! Still, only one way to learn how to wheelie and sometimes it involves overcooking it a bit. Whoops! At least you got to meet a lovely lady in an ambulance. Nurse outfit? :innocent:

Yep, I just start to develop a bit of a rep, as that dude on the gixxer who's always doin mint wheelies, (except when I left the 1098 ducati launch, they were shit,) and I go and do this:mellow:
But, on the bright side, Flames wheelies are gettin bloody good:yes: she's gettin the bug bike real high, and keepin it goin for good distance. Think I should retire, and leave it to her. It's an ideal bike for it too, low down grunt, and if it gets too high, shut the throttle off and it's like dropping an anchor, so she shouldn't have to worry about doin what I did too much.
But I think it should be said, that if you are trying to do wheelies, you HAVE to accept that this might happen. Nomatter how good you get at it.

Ouch!! Bugger mate. Good to hear you got away OK. Could have been a lot worse.
I was going to tell you that your Gixer has a fuelling problem that needs to be sorted. I noticed everytime you take off you get a sudden rush of fuel which you might not realise is accidentally causing your front wheel to lift off the ground. Bugger of a problem to fix those fueling glitches. Seems to run in your family too?
We must swap tips one day. Do you cover the rear brake- I like to think I do but in reality it's all over so quick (if it decides to flip), it's unlikely you would get to the brake in time. Best rely on engine braking to bring it back down.

Time for a bit of reflection.
Not wanting to sound condescending (but it will), after the tragic events of December, you were quoted as saying the incident was going to calm you down and think a bit more. Nobody's seen any evidence of this and in fact you seem to be getting looser on the road. Far be it from me to offer advice on safe riding practices, but think about this.
It's great when you can get off and laugh about it, but had you been riding the thou', and the same occured, it'd be a VERY different outcome. Sometimes we get lucky, more often than not we're screwed. Try and visualise that same thing happening at a rate of knots. If it doesn't scare ya, you're beyond help.

Sure enough, the same thing on the thou, would have been very different, but YOU, of all people have to admit, it's NOT the same thing on the thou. On a powerfull bike, it is easy to hoist, and requires little offort. When riding a half fucked 400, it requires dedication, and clutch abuse.
My point is this, on the 400, I'm doin 20/40k's, pullin the clutch in, revving it to hell, slipping it out, and waiting as long as it takes for the wheel to get high enough for me to control it with the throttle.
The thou' however, I twist the throttle, and it's on. It has the power, that means I dont need to be on the limit to keep it there. That is why, although I am aware of the risks, and I accept them, it is a very different ball game.
As for me saying, "I think it's time I toned it down on the road", I have! I make it my religion now, to take any corner at a pace I can hold my own lane on. This may sound impossible to the Aukland crowd, but you should all realise, we only ride TWO twisty roads fast. And they are both short enough to know like a race track. Any other road I ride, I am well conservative, to the point, that I didn't overtake Dover last weekend while on a ride up your neck off the woods.
How is it more dangerous than taking out the pit bike?
Very similar speeds, and I atleast have access to a rear brake while it's up there.
On the off chance your post was a piss take Bro, try it in better taste next time.

I cant wheelie a dirt bike on a grass paddock, but I had a blast on the new V twin Aprilia motard couple weeks ago, and it's much easier on an even surface.
Surprisingly though, there is more of a knack to doin it on them than I'd have thought. Initial hoist is a piece of piss as high as third gear, but when it gets near the ballance point, the rear shock extends, and it becomes quite twitchy. I mean it comes over on ya real quick, then ya shut it off, and the shock copresses again while the front drops, so reapplying the gas causes the prosess to start again. Throttle control has to be super smooth, I take my hat off, and appologise to the guys\girls who do it well, for never having giving it the respect they deserve.
To date, the easiest bike to look like a wheelie king apon, that Ihave ridden at least, is a litre sized sports bike, my K2 gixxer more specifically, torque for africa, and baulk to remain stable.

You'll have a new wheelie favorite when you ride my 450. Trust me.
Even one tooth up on the front sprocket it'll hoist the front wheel in top.
I've had mine on our dyno, it's as crisp as.....perfect throttle response, and enough engine braking to make the rear brake lever redundant.

Can do bro, probably should have a master handy to analize my attempts at explaining what goes on though. I have real trouble getting a clear picture accross.
Be a good idea tho, cos you've got the slow stuff well more sorted than I do, but I can change gear, and sit on the tank. A merge of style could only improve things

Sounds cool man, time and place will ensure my attendance. Wonder how the gixxer will hook up on the sand.....

Have to say that while the high speed wheelies are impressive, the constant speed/low speed ones are awesome. Maybe its knowing they are difficult, but also that you see the wheelie for much longer.
Why are the low-speed ones more difficult (if indeed they are)?

They are considerably more difficult, because ya need to be right on the point of balance, this is impossable on a moving object, so what you infact do, is go past the balance point and slow down a bit, which inturn brings you back below the bp, wher you gas on a touch. Up down, up down, but you want to do it looking as smooth as poss.
I think I'm half way there, because on the gixxer, I can infact slow down from around 120k's, to well below 100. And now that I've started clutchin it up in second around 50k's I can keep it below 70, for quite a while.
On the stunt hack, I'm hoping the reduced fear (caused by having it real low geared, so slow as hell) will help me with goin past the balance point for extended periods, and use the brake to stop it from tipping.

Another reason (other than the ones Fizzer has offered) they're so tricky is you don't have the gyroscopic balance from the front wheel.
Just like when you get any bike up on balance point for long enough for the front wheel to stop spinning.......the bike starts to 'weave' ever so slightly from side to side. A tad unsettling at over 200 clicks on a big road bike!

True dat, I find it happens sp..sper...speradi, fuck it, with no consistancy, sometimes it'll hand there at 170 smooth a silk, other times ya have to stand up on the pegs to get enough body movement goin on to control it. Whadup with that?

I think they are, because you can give the bike a bounce before ya tug, get some help from the springs like. And when it's up, you've got more steering control, because you can move your wieght further.
