I have been keeping an eye on how much fuel my baby has been using, and am just wondering if it seems too high/low/about right....

full tank of gas is about $17 and it will do on average 115miles (185km) - doing a combination of motorway and town riding.

Does this sound about right for a 210kg 89' carby 600cc bike?

i have been keeping track of mine for a while

AVG $18.76 to fill
AVG 13.09 litres to fill
AVG 212.61 km to a tank
AVG 11.39 km/$1
AVG 16.32 km/l

I ride fairly quickly but not insane speeds. Mostly open road riding.

GSXR 600 - red light on dash = fill her up

Kawa ZX6R - 275km after that you're walking.....

And waiting on the side of a road between Pirongia and Otorohanga *(not sure on the spelling)*

LOL!!! Sympthies! I worked out the mpg on my GSX and I could get 45mpg cruising. CAn't remembe the K's per tank, but crawled into a gas station once with the needle UNDER the red and it took 15.6lt so still had 4.4lt to go! Was relieved, as it was raining!
I'd gone from Te Kuiti to Wairakei through Taumaranui and up the Western side of Taupo.

well, thats better than what my 250 will manage, so ya shouldn worry.
But gas is a bit more expensive up here so on second thought maybe its about the same.

My GSX returns an average of 47.9mph, inc. pillion riding, some fast blasts and mostly daily commuting. Best trip was open road cruising at 56mph.
Before I had the carbs synchhed and a good service was little better than 30mph first two trips.

How do I know such detail? Because I am sad enough to keep a spreadsheet, wanting to compare the improvement of the service and compare it to the RG for economy. Tank returns (main tank only) 200+k (then a 13l fill) and 300+ is possible moving onto the 5l reserve.

I tried to attach the .xl but kiwibiker wouldn't have it. When I 'earn' my personal logo it'll have to be 'king of the saddos'.

Me too. I average around 19 km/ l. Used to get 23 km/l from my 250.

Looks like youre getting around 16 km/h there Dan, which would be of the correct order.

Update in reponse to a pm on the subject and chat with a GSX750f owner:

After 6000ks logged onto the spreadsheet average mpg is now 50.1mpg. Main 15l tank is safe for 250k with the reserve still with 5l.
Grown to realise that the HUGE fuel gauge actually DOES work, although it is calibrated to indicate when you are getting near the time to fill or switch to reserve, at about 220k @ 50mpg. Living dangerously you and then switching to the reserve you could still put an extra 100k + onto your trip once it is showing empty, but its pretty good at letting you know when to think about topping up.

I think my engine is the same as yours - just newer ;)

My tank is about $23 to fill (thats just gone into reserve) and on average I get 280 k's out of it.
Best I ever got was 300 before reserve, worst was 260 (which was last week).

I've found doing the Wednesday night rides the range is on the low side of average due to the stop start and slow speeds (and then the thrash on the way home lol)

You seem to have something outa whack there....

My GSXR1100 would do 290km main tank and the 750 about 250km. Both with similar/smaller tanks

From that website:
37.4 mpg urban, 46.8 mpg motorway, 42.1 mpg (av)

That's pretty poor. I'm getting 50mpg commuting and highway riding around 56mph. On the burn over 7000rpm maybe it would drop but my figs. are inline with most of the other GSX6&750 riders I've chatted to recently.

I get 20km/litre out of a twenty year old XS650. Expecting the km/litre to improve as will be doing some work on her. Small tank though only takes $8 to fill her up.

Yea 90S, my 1100 avgd about 45mpg or 16.5km/lt. However, if DDs tank takes $17 to fill (petrol is similar price now) then how come capacity is claimed at 20lt? And 185km/tank is seriously off.

I've been keeping track on my km/l recently as i thought ive been spending alot on gas.
All my riding is general commuting, and the bike feels like its running sweet.

From reserve, add $20 fuel = 12.3L. This lasted only 145kms before switching to reserve again. Thats about 12km/Ltr

iAny idea what would cause this? Dirty airfilter or maybe worn needles?

Agree - no idea why DD is getting these figs. Update DD?
As with megage0ff above though wonder about general tuning of bike. As in my first post in this thread, I was getting only about 30mpg before Ricky at Haldane's gave the carbs a thorough going over, dropped the needles and checked the airfilter etc. Now its 50mph and more power.

Imagine above would explain it but you never know if previous owners have advanced the timing or messed with other things to "improve" performance ...

Thanks for that. Guess ill have to get it checked out and pray it doesn't cost a small fortune to correct.

Sorry, forgot to answer this bit:

I would guess fill without reserve (15l main tank, so fill about 13l as this seems about empty) and petrol was cheaper at start of this thread therefore 13l x $1.30 = $17).

I'll PM the great man himself to see if this is about right ... or not.

Geeting carbs checked and compression test is not cheap, but can be worth it.
Only word of caution is that this thread is figs. based on GSX-Fs and maybe your figs aren't bad for your bike? I'd do a little online research first.

MPG on mine is still the same. After having oil changes and plug changes, including HT leads etc it has not changed.

Only thing now, is that it takes closer to $20 to fill! (not including reserve)

As mentioned previously; timing, carb balancing and tuning are the way to go. On the bright side you will be getting a better spark so it should be easier to start. Your engine will thank you for the new oil and will last longer.

My bike is getting worse the closer it gets to service time, second service coming up in 800k's so hopefully it will improve afterwards.

The temperature can have something to do with it as well

Up to 55mpg from the 1450cc two-up and with touring gear, will drop down to 50+mpg with a bit of hill work and/or head-winds.

1200cc seemed to do 55mpg to just under 60mpg under same conditions.

Don't do much town running so have no idea about that side of things.
