View Full Version : So much to learn....

I just got back from yet another teip over the hill to the Wairarapa. I've been riding for about 5 weeks now and have done this trip 3 or 4 times. I'm really enjoying my time out on my bike  - even when I totally stuff things up :gob: .

There is still soooooo much to learn. And I find that the things I did well last time I was on the bike alluded me this time.

Ah well, I'll just continue to persevere, I'm sure more time on the road will bring some improvement. :scooter:

And to the other chicks whose partners don't want them to ride. Tell them that they don't have to like what you are doing, but they do have to support you.

I agree, quite daunting when you think about all there is to learn...suppose it's best just to take one ride at a time.

Scamp

Yep, one ride at a time, and try and focus on just a couple of things. At the moment I'm trying to work on counter steering and making sure my lines are right when entering corners. Once I've got those two things suss'd I'm sure one of my mentors will tell me something else I need to work on.

Good on ya scamp!! That hill will teach you a lot (sometimes things you would rather not learn), just remember to always treat it with respect and you'll do fine. Every time you get out there on the road you'll get just a little better too.
Are you gonna come on the notorious "chick ride" on the 10th?

Scamp

Haven't heard anything about the "chick ride".

It is suitable for total newbie's?

If so, can you give me some details.

March 10th Welly Girls meet up at rimutex (Caltex Rimutaka)1 pm and stop at top of the Taka's.
Rapa Chick's meet them at the top of the Takas at about 1.15pmish.

Ride down to Lady Featherston Cafe in Featherson for a coffee, eats and a chat.

Leave at 2.30pmish... for a ride over to Waikanae for Quasi's show. Thinking of going over Haywards and a stop on Paek Hill. Should get to Waikanae about 4.30pmish.

There's a thread about it floating around somewhere and it's in the calender events also. It definately caters to newbe chicks and you'll get to meet a few of us local chicks. Be good to have you along!

I ain't no expert but ...

Have look at buying this book, its American, but I think it's one of the best books on safe motorcycling you could ever buy. Remember it is for left hand riding but once you read it you will refer to it time and time again. I do.

Best wishes for your riding.

My wife and i learning to ride, and it has been great fun to do together. Cant imagine why anyone wouldn't want their partner bettering themselves by learning to ride....

Sounds like a great scheme. Welcome to the world of riding and the kb forum. Have fun and ride safe. Look forward to hearing of your adventures.

Hi Scamp, glad to hear it's going well. I'm new to all this too and I feel exactly the same - there is SO much to learn. But that's ok, I'd prefer to remember there's a ton of things I don't even know I don't know than start getting cocky :)

Anyway, how's your GPX been going? I was just curious as my lady-friend is seriously considering one (we were in Palmy on Saturday so she could test ride one - it's her favourite so far (and comes in red!))

So have you found it ok for learning on and stuff so far? Anything to watch out for? Am sure she'd be interested to hear how your starting-out experience with the kawasaki has been.

cheers anyway

I can't understand this either. I've been teaching my partner to ride. She just did her basic handling skills on Saturday. Just the scrathy to go now.

Have fun out there Scamp. See you around.

Some guys feel threatened by their partners independence and the fact they can ride better than them!!!!!!

Hi Scamp,

Join us for as many rides as you can before they stop for the Autumn. Nasty is a new rider too and there's heaps of chicks on KB who are coming along on the rides. Yep there's a hoons group but there's also a careful group which usually has a leader and a tail end sweeper. Both groups arein fact doing the same thing ... expanding their knowledge and skills and experimenting with new things.

Don't feel intimidated or anything like that because even the hoons on KB will give you the same bit of advice "... ride your own ride, do'nt try and keep up ...". What's more, they won't give you a hard time for following that advice .. more often someone will ride with you and show you lines and stuff :)

I'll get in first and recommend The [b]Cruisy[/b[]Wednesday Night Ride ("TCWNR"). Read the original post in that thread in Meeting & Events forum to see that it is all about new riders and a safe and sedate ride to somewhere while the sun is still up.

My GPX has been great, apart from adjusting the clutch, front brake and rear brake positions I've just been able to get on it and ride. My only concern was that it seemed a lot heavier than the GN that I did my basic handling skills test on, but I've got over than now.
If your partner is a taller lady, the other bike I'd suggest her trying is the Hyosung. The only bit of information I received about them was to avoid anything before 2003.
Happy riding

Fjones is my hubby, and the only thing that I feel threatened by is the bathroom when he gets done with it!

Guys erm - girls....

At the risk of being tarred and feathered by the "You must learn everything in zis book because riding is a science" brigade.....

Please don't forget it is also an art and a very enjoyable one at that. Yeah - I know the basic theory etc etc and thats all good but it's not the whole story. Number one - have fun doing it, don't treat it like an exam, two - RELAX a little and try to get a flow going. Your bike (unless horribly bent or badly adjusted) is probably 10 times more capable than you think, it's not going to grow horns and start ravishing you, it's a friend you can trust NOT to hit on your sister while you are in the powder room.

If you have managed to learn to walk and don't fall over more than once a day you can ride well. Just be confident and let your common sense, your fun sense, smell, sight and every day 'awareness' express themselves. yes there is some science involved, but it's not an exact one....

Yep, what he said. Riding is just like any other activity or sport. You get better by practicing. You can learn what you were supposed to be doing by reading all the books later.

Try out a few different thing each time you ride, be confident, and you'll be sweet. (Probably).

Now Mrs Kendog, You look after my mate here. Couldn't wipe the grin off her face yesterday after track day. She even brought the bike into work for the first time yesterday. (didn't bring it today though - shame on you scamp :nono: )

Hey Scamp hope to see you on some rides sometime...

Heres a link to the chicks ride on this saturday.... we arent all as scary as Mrs Kendog... hehehehe ahh dont hurt me!!!

http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=44165

Believe me it gets better as you practice more and gain more confidence.... and its a load of fun!!! :) When I first started I really got most of my support from fellow KBers... awesome people.

Scamp
6th March 2007, 20:01
Thanks for all the support guys and gals. I'm sure you're all right, the more I get out there the more confidence I will gain.

Sadly I won't be able to make it this Saturday, but I'll keep an eye on KB for other events.

And who knows, I might get to meet some of you on the hill as it's a great learning ground (once again I'll apologise for slowing you all down) :)

ooooH would you do that for me.....

Just for the record. Scamp has probably gone faster on one wheel as a pillion than I have ever gone on two wheels. Her partner would have been one of the fastest guys in the fast group at Manfield. She is no beginner when it comes to speed on two wheels, Just never been on the controls.

But give her time :blip:
