Must have been doing something stupid... I split every day, both ways... have done for 3 years. No bother at all except once - a warning ... and I was getting to quick anyway.

Fair dos - the cops on the NW are pretty good.

I was pulled over mid Jan 07 just shy of Albany. Officer on his scooter explained the lanesplitting was illegal but over looked unless you were doing something stupid. Once traffic is flowing at 50kph you are expected to follow suit, I have split ever since knowing in this knowledge.

Monday last week I watched a police bike (46WME) doing the very same thing that you are talking about.

This was at about 8:20am and in Penrose area of the motorway, going north.

Noted this as I have seen and heard of bikes being piulled over for this very same act.

I was one, between the hendo' and te atatu bridges before the bend. I saw in his mirrors he'd seen me from way way back so carried on, was running late for work and going a wee bit faster than usual too. I suppose splitting past a bike cop is in the "asking for it" category though. I pulled over straight away cos he's pulled me over before and is a real good guy. Is the only cop I have met who I can honestly say is focussed on keeping people safe and I feel bad I made him pull me over. I recon he know's all bikes split and is more looking for the level of control and response to the road environment than the exact letter of the law. The respect I have from the way he's been real genuine when he's stopped me has done more for the NZ police force combined. Like the cops that did us for bridge swinging off Greenhithe. Some of NZ's most experienced hight work trainers and rockclimbers running a double rig, fully redundant, full strength back up linded together by 4 x 40kn steel carabiners telling us the reason they were doing us was cos we could have hurt ourselves, shivers, next time I'll just get pissed in the viaduct and gope someone, that seems to be ok these days. Or the other cop who stopped me for doing 62 on Wairau rd in the dry, daylight with no other cars visible at all. Two lanes each way plus a median and he too was saving me from crap knows what. He was in the busstop. asked me why I didn't slow down. Said I didn't look at my speedo cos I was going so slow, ah. Why do I end up ranting?

Hope you Sth Auckland Bums Had a good Ride in this morning...I was in the Provincial truck that was moving over and letting you through....When i saw you guys( and Girls too) that is...

Seriously I`m in a big truck and dont care about bikes lane splitting, most bikers look in my mirror to see if Iv`e seen them and its easy as to make Eye contact and wave them through.

have fun and look out for me on the motorway , I`ll only bounce you off the median twice before letting you through:yes: :innocent:   ;)

but besides the point....i'm slowing it down to sensible speeds now..after this crash ive taken i close look at my riding...i'm sick of the fines the injurys etc....i'm slowing down my riding in every aspect and no more risky overtakes etc...

i'd rather be a minute later than never arrive at all

I have discussed this with a number of Traffic and motorways cops an supervisors. There is no offence for lane splitting however if you do a dorkauckland and split at close to three didit speeds while the traffic is bumper to bumper you will get a kick up your ass.

I have been also told by a few motorways cops that there are one or two of guys who do make a big deal about it and may lay a careless charge or isssue a failing to keep within lane $150...like anything in life it depends who the cop is.

there you all have it, straight from the horses mouth, or should I say pigs (jokes)
if your indicating can you still be done for not keeping within your lane??

I split/overtook a cop while going up ayr st in newmarket and he didn't seem to mind. What the deal with splitting/overtaking on a single lane, or using the meadian to drive down ??? all while the cars are stoped or very slowly moving of course!

I have started tucking in my mirrors today because they are getting too close to the cars wing mirrors and I don't want any contact, do what ever your doing with as much curteosy(sp) as possible. The only thing that annoys me is that i cant say thanks to peole while i'm splitting cause i like to keep both hands on the controls for safety reasons.

Sweet, wouldn't have been you behind me then !

Was splitting through and then had a moment where the trucks were three wide with no gap on either side! Came through a little earler this morning for a meeting.

Trucks always make me a little nervous. They are so big and I am so small. 3 wide and I wouldnt be in a hurry.

On that new stretch at Otahuhu I got pinned behind a cager who insisted that he had the right to wander in lane and a truck in the centre.

Another truck sounded his horn, inside lane, and through gestures made me aware of lots of space in front of him

Thanks to that driver. Must have been a bike rider.

overtook two traffic bikey cops this morning.. one had pulled someone over, the other just before the "hamilton" off ramp to get on southern from the nw...

traffic was nasty this morning... got even worse when I got to epsom... seems everyone is so stuck up and poncey there! Some fruitloop of a woman driver cut me off on epsom ave... collected her mirror with my arm during my 'evasive action' .. stupid biatch! Ran into uni (was running late) and ahhhh.... 8:40am... damit. missed the start of lecture. Couldnt walk in late because i was in full bike gear and would have made so much noise with velcro and pants removal etc I would have annoyed everyone... meh... missed a class in the first fricking week.. great..

did not see ANY other bikes this morning though which was strange... (apart from bikey cops)

I have noticed the same on the NW. Afternoons as well.
I am doing my best to add to the lack of bikes, by sitting in the cage and cursing honda electronics.

Was doing 140ish the other day lane splitting traffic on the motorway. The only danger in this was I didn't get a clear view of the cop till he was at my 9 o'clock.

Lucky Hitcher wasn't in front of me or I wouldn't got away.

I'm finding the lanesplitting a lot easier than before Chrimbo - the cars are keeping good distances between lanes. Still get the odd lane wanderer but Tend to sit in their mirrors until they move over and off I go again.

I stick to some of the rules mentioned by D50.

The trucks are good but don't count on it (don't count on anything). The cars are dopey and I wish people would stop looking for bikes and just go straight or indicate then turn. The ones that see you seem to have no idea about target fixation, they just stare and get closer and closer. The only people I have problems with are the young guys in plumbers (and sparkies and builders etc) vans who have been coming damn close with what can only be a deliberate swerve, see them seeing me in the mirror (big van mirror) I get close then a sharp jerk on their wheel not followed by a lane change. People being dopey people sucks but really we know to expect it. Some one trying to take me out (or pretending just to intimidate) will get me fricken fired up. I normally just keep passing then split on but slow cos they pissed me off which is no good for the smooth riding mojo. From now on I have decided to follow them and when I see a cop just sit on the horn and point. Who knows what they'll do, I hope they'll stop them even if it is just to shut me up. I'll let you all know how it goes!

Ain't that the truth....

Although I like to look at it as a game of wits and mind reading.
You either have your wits about you or you don't.
The pre-requisite to win the game is being able to read the attitude of cars and their drivers.

If I can't be 100% then I don't split.
