I'm looking at a 1991 gsxr250 for $1700. Looks to be in good condition, just had it's air filter replaced. Thing is though, 45,000 kms. I know engine life varies but does anyone have a vauge idea for the gixxer 250?

Generally speaking they will last a long time, although if they've been canned quite a few of ones I have known have needed the valves reseating at around 50k.

As discussed elsewhere Suzuki coils don't age well either. I've had heaps of problems with old suzuki electrics overheating.

Apart from the usual things you'd expect from a bike that is a few years old the motors in those seemed quite strong. I certainly canned mine for 35,000k's with no mechanical problems.

I don't have a lot of faith in those lil motors for longevity.
All the higher km ones ive seen have been on their last legs.
Mind you mostly its just a case of freshening up the top end with a valve grnd and theyre good again.

My mate has one in the 80000 catagory and it runs fine. With any of the more potent 250's out there the thing you gotta check out is service history. If it has a clean bill of health she should be good, but it it has had it's nuts ridden off then stay away cause you'll buy a lemon. Good thing to do is get a bike shop to do a pre-purchace check and make sure they not only do a compression test but get the mechanic to go for a ride to suss out anything else that mi.ght be wrong
