View Full Version : Is it just me?

I dont want to upset anyone but I have noticed that there seems to be a lot of posts appearing that are just short video clips such as "You tube".

Dont get me wrong I have enjoyed some of them but have gotten a little jaded when opening up what I think may be an interesting post, only to find it is a link to one of these videos.

They take time to download, they seem to be lacking in originality and usually they seem to lack any sort of diretion.

To be frank with you I have found myself skipping those posts entirely.

Yes they can be interesting or funny or informative, but they can also be boring, repetitive and asinine.

Spank, in the future how about a dedicated place for these to be posted. Then those people who wish to see them can go and those who dont can avoid them when they wish.

Call me a grumpy old bugger but I prefer, the ever lively slanging matches between some of the sites more colourful members, the lively debates, the calls for help and advice, the arrangements of meetings/rides, the serious messages that keep us informed and even the pointless drivel, to the seemingly endless supply of short snip videos.

As this forum states "Rant and Rave" and this has been mine.

Lively debate wholely accepted, derission (?) and such ignored.

No, it's not just you, Mr M. I don't mind links to external sites if the item posted about is really good, but I can't be faffed wasting my download limit clicking on these links - which of late have been pretty lame. Perhaps we could ask that the words You Tube could be added to the title?

I think a special place for them is a silly idea. If you don't want to watch it just don't click on it. That's my opinon.

I agree with you Merde. I think that YouTube and other similar sites were created for a legitimate purpose: for people to post and view video clips of varying degrees of "quality". If people want to view video clips, they should go to YouTube.

Otherwise another forum like "Jokes & humour" could be useful for those who feel compelled to recycle video clips to have their own place to put them.

So if this is your rant and rave, why is it posted in GBR?

My appologies please ammend this error of mine.

Why don't the mods just get really strict and shift dumb youtube threads (of which I agree there are many) to PD more often?

Joni

I have moved it to Site Stuff, as it is related to the "functionality" of the site..

Not a bad idea.

Sometimes, in answer to your previous comment, I open a thread on the lead topic alone without waiting for the mouse over to give a hint as to the content. Thats usually when I find a video clip. As I said, some of them I find fun but a constant supply of the just seems to indicate a lack of creativity and imagination on the part of the posting member.

well i dont get what you're on about, i get it but cant you just click "back"? If you want to sort things go find a filing cabinet - it'll be much easier than the internet

I mouse over threads to preview them to see if its interesting or not

Now THERE'S a thought!

But then again we'd probably get embroiled in endless shit-fights about what constituted "dumb".

One wonders how long the recycling of video clips would continue if posters couldn't increase their post count or get green rep from such practices...

You are not alone Mr Merde. I think you posted in the right place since most of these recycled links to clips are posted in Gen. bike Ravings.
You see a title like "whoa, bad crash'' and think holy shit a member has crashed but it turns out to be a blurry video archive of some far flung Hungarian or whatever having an off. If it involves kiwis or a KB in some way then that's relevant and of interest. Links to porn clips or pics of nude chickie babes are another matter of course and totally relevant to motorcycling.
Edit- well bugger me. I blinked and they moved this to Site Stuff? The crime is happening in GBR - you should never move evidence from a crime scene until Forensics have finished!

I think if its bike related, or something of real interest then yup...If its a clip of top gun then its not...

Any person who has a fairly level head knows the difference between crap and worth while...

I move everything already that I feel does not contribute to the site in some way...

I had similar thoughts myself but envisaged getting flamed if I had the nerve to actually vocalise them in this post.

A blue-sky idea; a bit of code so that when a user posts a youtube vid, the upload box locks in place for 60 seconds or so, and displays an "upload in progress" status message, even though that's not really true. That would make the process less attractive for posters, as it would take 60 seconds of waiting to post. There'd be ways around it of course, just text linking, etc, but it's an idea.

I'm another one who agrees with Mr Merde. I'm on dial up at home, so You Tube isn't practical, and we can't access it at work. On dial up it takes time to even open a post, then click the back button also is quite slow. So these You Tube posts are a waste of time in the truest sense.

I cannot view these things anyway , so I am all in favour of having them parked somewhere. We have "Jokes and Humour", howabout a sister forum under Off Topic, of "Videos".

That's nothing you should see how well he dresses his bike!
And may I add as a shining example of proper use that Steam correctly placed a youtube link recently :Punk: . In the right thread, in the right section that related to the subject and involved KiwiBikers. Yeah, yeah I have a vested interest in that post but it was totally relevant to this site and it's members. No Hungarians, Slovaks, Mogolians or those people with horrible Yankie accents were in the clip.

I agree. In the right thread and in context they can and are a great addition to any discussion. When posted for their own sake and with little or no relevance I personally dont like them and as I stated in my initial post , tend to ignore them usually.

In addition to last night's inebriated battle call I would point out that some of us use the RSS feed which has no mouseover preview therefore gives no warning.

If you don't know what RSS is then download a real browser and find out. Its awesome.

Yup, even I agree.

There's too much regurgitated you tube shit being linked on this site.

It distracts people from the important topical matters like

-All pigs are rapists
-Speeding and Runners are cool
-Mods are cunts
-Scooters and hondas are for homosexuals (and midgets)
-I own the slow group.
-White Trash and Cowpoos are gay lovers. Riff Raff holds the camera.

I have no problem with vids created by the members. I have no problem with vids at all.

I just raised this thread as there seems to be a definite trend towards trawlling the vid sites and posting them.

At one stage last night after posting this thread I was refreshing the New Posts and there were 6-7 threads on the first pade with You Tube vids in them.

I have enjoyed a lot of these items but it now seems to be the norm to post a vid.

Is it a case of

"Monkey see, monkey do"?

It feels like it sometimes.

I posted a thread linking to youtube last night - It showed sports bikes being ridden like they should.

Today I posted 3 links in a thread about 07 R1's to vids showing official lauch videos and road tests of this bike.

KB has always welcomed bike vids.

I assume you're talking more about the non-bike related stuff.

What's wrong with watching a vid of a Hungarian have an off??? What's the diff who does what as long it's something to do with motorcycles......better this than some of rot we see now a days.....yaaa-f'ckin-hoo Vanilla Coke is back.....:zzzz:

Fancy language from someone who's sole role on this site is to group and sort.

By the way - as I'm an individual too can I request a sub-forum for my posts?? You can call it - "Musings of that jerk JSG"

P:S - Just trying to wind ya up - so don't take it to heart -- I'll go find a post of Boomer's or Dover's to criticise......

Has anything been decided here? I am still finding heaps of You Tube and similar videos and I agree that they are often like the newspaper online links - "Isn't this appalling? - (then the link to an article)"

I don't think it's asking too much to have a little bit more info so the mouseover (so that's what you call it!) tells you "here is a cool video of some Hungarian guy crashing" (so I won't bother opening the thread) or "Isn't this appalling? - I just read in the Herald today (here's the link) that the cops are going to be targeting Hondas" (short and to the point and if you feel strongly enough, you can open the thread and contribute).

But I do think the videos should be in a separate thread because even with broadband, they're not something I really can be bothered opening on a regular basis. Sometimes the mouseover doesn't work so I have to open a thread to find out what it's about so it's really irritating then to just have a link or the words "this is cool!"
