View Full Version : What is up with Onewa Road?

I cannot believe the spate of morons that have crossed my path in one week on Onewa Road. What is wrong with this stretch of tarmac, is it full of arseholes or is it just bad luck?

First up, I'm cruising at a reasonable speed not overly fast. I see a four wheel truck looking like it's ready to pull out of a side road and turn across the traffic. I am the only vehicle on the road. I have my lights on, don't know why as i usually don't bother with this except when it is dark. Brake is covered just in case. Just as I get to the turning almost level with the truck the plonker pulls out, clouds of white smoke pouring off the wheels where they are spinning so fast for tranction. Best emergency stop ever is pulled off inches from a side-on impact with this truck. I even have time to spew my vengeance after this moron and call him a f***ing c**t, one of the benefits of an open face helmet. I think the old lady at the bus stop was a bit put out, hope it was not your mum.

Next up, same piece of road same week. Check mirror and see another truck so close to my back wheel I think the driver wants to be riding on the pillion seat. It must have been inches away. I swop lanes, so does he. I ride a tad aggressively and push between a few cars. Think I lost him, nope, there he is driving furiously up my rear. How he did this I do not know or why. I speed up so does he. I cannot believe how close he was. Finally managed to shoot up the middle between the lanes of cars and lose him. Not interested in being shunted from behind just want to go home and chill at the end of the day.

Lastly same piece of road same week also. Going the other way now. I have a good road poistion out on the right following the queue of cars in front. Next thing some dude in his car undertakes me on a single lane and squeeze only just inbetween me and the car in front. To get where, in front of me only because there is a queue so he can't go anywhere else. God only knows how he got past, I think he put his wheels up on the curb. I was doing 50kmph keeping up with the traffic. I shake my head in disbelief at this one, who ever gave him his license and said he could drive must have been pissed that day.

The rest of my travels across town seem to go without incident. Is it just this one piece of road? Are other roads full of morons on a mission? Or was it a bad week for me that maybe could have been much worse? Or worse still I am blessed with good fortune on other roads and unfortuntely got a sample of what everyone else faces on a daily basis?

It's because most people that use Onewa road are from Birkenhead or Birkdale or other western parts of the Shore..... Too close to the west auckland if you ask me. I keep to the East coast bays...

He's right... Westies with a bit of money...

I live on Onewa Rd and so ride up and down it daily. The cagers are fucking morons. Exspecially in the mornings when the traffic is bumper to bumper from Highbury Shops down to the motorway. You get cages trying to turn down side roads to skip the que and cut in, and the same assholes trying to dodge the Transit guys that monitor the bus/express lane. I've seen a biker being taken out, and the aftermath of another 2 bikers taken out riding in the express lane heading to the motorway, when a cagers coming from the other direction turns to go down the side road and "assumes" that because the first lane is bumper to bumper that the second lane is empty... they even pull out infront of buses... the dumb fucks... With the amount of "hard on the brakes" I've been through I now ride towards the motorway in the mornings at between 30-40kph and make a point to slow down when approaching any side streets on my side of the road just incase... has saved me emergency braking a few times...

Also keep an eye out for an older-ish lady in a white VW golf, she deliberatly pulls over to the middle of the lane to stop bikers splitting, she's done this to me numerous times over the last year... one day she'll loose a mirror.

And riding home in the evenings isn't much better... exspecially when you go past the gas station and just as your passing the old age home, the two lanes merge into one... if you can stay in the middle of the lane otherwise the cagers try to get up beside you...

I remember seeing a program on TV in Europe which explained why car drivers can not judge the speed or even existence of a bike. Because we travel generally in a straight line, have a low front profile & single lights (or closely spaced lights), our distance and speed does not get registered to them until we are very close. The program suggested that if we gently zig-zag with out lights on, the car drivers have more of a chance of registering our prescence and speed. (If they still pull out, then you can safely assume they are indeed twats). When I come up to side roads with someone waiting, I will zig-zag as if I am having a Mini-Tank-Slapper. They usually just stay there and wait for me to collide with something. Then when you get closer to them, stop zig-zagging and smile.

lol that would work... scare them into noticing you...

*makes mental note not to zig zag like I'm drunk when cops are around*

Yeah, onewa is a bit of a shocker. Come down there every morning and go home there occasionally. Going up is normally the worst, the wide single lane, all the cars drive on the center line! Get tailgated up there often and people try to undertake.

Gotta watch out in the morning coming down the transit lane that you dont get taken out around the side streets.

Yea I second that, I always slow down when I come upto one, gotta watch out not only people pulling out, but more so the ones turning in. Can't see them behind the cars and they can't see you.

Also like I said, the roadworks at the bottom will be starting soon, we're gonna be making it wider.

Not too sure on that one.

Now that I'm working in Albania, I don't travel down Onewaaaah! much (only once in the last few munce). I might have to make a point of it, just so's I can collect me a MirrorTrophy™.
What time does this cow communte down Onewa usually?

EDIT:
Heheh... just had this insane video run through my head, of cruising down Onewa, stopping beside a white Golf mired in traffic, whipping my cordless drill outta my tank bag, and unscrewing bits of the car while sitting beside it....

I usually leave home between 7.55am and 8.05am. And I see her 3 days out of 5 most times. Its an older model VW Golf, the square-ish looking ones...

I've got to the lights near the gas station, and spotted her ahead, driving normally in her lane, as soon as she spots me (or another biker) she moves right to the line so its hard to pass unless the cage on the other side moves over (which they usually do), I've even tried holding the clutch in and drifting up towards her thinking "she won't hear me" but she always see's me... really pisses me off, exspecially when she's a bit slow and starts to move over when your already dirrectly opposite her, she nearly pushed me into another cager the other day... really makes me wanna kick her mirror off... but I'm a chicken shit in the sense that knowing my luck I'll hit/kick it and do nothing but either hurt myself or cause myself to drop the bike...

Is it a convertible, they made a few of those?
I have not performed a mirrorectomy on the central mirror of a car, only wing mirrors, but a convertable would provide a new bit of fun!!!
I'm beginning to see the need to do a morning ride to the North Sore.

No... not convertable... just normal hatchback type ugly white VW...

I'm sure I've mentioned the tart before in another thread about Onewa Rd... It's an ongoing issue... And I've seen her cut off other bikers too, and theres heaps of bikers that go down/up Onewa Rd everyday, someone will eventually get pissed off enough and help her to be mirror free...

Surfer, you are right about Onewa Rd, it is a regular source of stress for many bikers in the mornings and evenings. Too many idiots in a small space with cages.Personally I avoid it, if I'm going that way now I take the road that brings you out at the bottom of the hill, Sylvan Ave I believe, much less stress.
Good onya for not getting flattened though, braking in a hurry must be interesting on the Chopper huh?

yep, Sylvan Ave. I take that way most of the time. You hit a cue that goes around a few corners waiting for the light, but just go up the side keeping to the centre line, there's only like 5 cars or so that might be comming the other way, and when u get to the end, there's heaps of room to split up the side with :Punk:

I was thinking about this last night, and came up with some ideas, like instead of tossing a brick through the window, just park one on the roof.
Or the "open the back door" idea: non-destructive, probably not illegal, and annoying as hell.
But neither of these give Mrs UrgleeWhiteVWDriver the message.

I quite liked the idea that was on here many moons ago about slapping a sticker on the windscreens of cars when their drivers did summat stupid.

How about a message like that one that pops up in the Image Gallery from time to time:

And putting in the buslane for the buses that hardly anyone uses, apart from nooobs and knobbz.
Why are they wasting all our DollarShekels on the bus lanes? :nono:
They don't have enough buses if people do decide to use them.
They don't have enough drivers already.
They don't have enough parking places for the PArk'n'Die.
For what it's costing, they could've expanded the motorway which they're going to have to do anyway.
It would've been better/cheaper/kewler/easier to have put in a monorail system: minimum footprint; no drivers needed; they could've hung it off the bridge or from skyhooks; it would've been better/cheaper/kewler/easier.
Because I said.

Agreed in the sense of the mono-rail train idea thingy... A lot of people would use that, or just as good a pedestrian/cycilist bit under the bridge, again would be used by a lot of people...

However... your comment about the buses... have you ever sat on Onewa Road and watched them (I know because Sam and I are both one of those noobs and knobs that use the bus system). From 6.30am onwards just from Glenfield/Beachaven there are approx 4 buses every 15-20 minutes. From 7.30am onwards there are approx 4 buses every 15 minutes (takapuna/Newmarket and two city buses... one from beachaven and one from glenfield and the university bus), and the buses are PACKED. Most times there is standing room only. Also with Birkenhead buses, because its a small company (compared to Stagecoach) Sam and I know most of the busdrivers, and they all seem to be very aware of bikers. I've never had a "close call" with a Birkenhead bus, they generally run on time and IMO a noob/knob on a bus is better than a complete wankstain in a cage. 30+ people to one bus vs 1 wanker in a cage, certainly makes everyones daily commute that little bit easier.

yeah, but that's Birkenhead Buses, and they're OK.
The pharkin' Stagecoach bus drivers are total F-wits.

My WomanPorcupineAccountantPillioneerer used the bus nearly every day for over 7 years (now she works in Tackker Punga and drives, despite me trying to convince her she should get a bike/scooter/bike/scooter/bike). For her it was good, except the bus took her from basically outside our house to outside her work, so she got no exercise, apart from the occasional porking (when the planets/moon/PorkingGodz were in the correct alignment).

Basically, when you think about it, buses SUCK. People should ride a bike/scooter/bike/scooter/bike.

Oddly, that has been the case for over 50 years.

Back before the ARA was invented, there was Birkenhead Transport , based at Verran's Corner. And North Shore Bus Co. , based at Takapuna, at the old railway station (didn't know about that , did y' ).

And the universal opinion was that Birkenhead Transport was pretty good stuff ; and North Shore Buses were a bunch of useless plonkers. Then the ARA took over North Shore Buses (plonker calling to plonker). And they are still useless plonkers.

Damn... sounds like our place... it creaks a lot, and I always hear a ticking noise at night (faster than say a second hand ticking...) which comes and goes throughout the night, from the window at the bottom of the bed... For months only I heard it and it pissed me off cause I'd say to Sam "can you hear that?" and it would be ticking away and she always said "no". Until about a month or so ago, she finally heard it. So I stopped thinking I was crazy lol

Also I see "shadows" moving around where there shouldn't be any shadows, but since I was a kid I always saw stuff like that (I could tell you stories of the shit I've seen), and I always feel "not alone" but in a weird scary kinda way when Sam goes away and I'm alone... but I always put that stuff down to me being a chicken shit and because I'm scared of the dark it's just my head playing with me...

I'll start worrying when they start talking to me lol
