There's a vid on youtube of some racer chap explaining all the new features and how they work....

Marketing dept aside - it would be nice if a previous R1 rider could say how good the bike is - and if is a real threat to the gixxer? Rather hear what they have to say instead of some journalistic type (unless it's you Not-small Dave).

By the way - MCN claims the Fireblade is the best real world 1000cc bike for 2007. The had the 07 R1 in the comparo too.

They retain their second hand values a lot better than the other brands. Suzuki seem to drop the fastest - from dealership prices found on www.bikepoint.com.au.

I talked to Yamaha about the bike prices and they said that they believe there bikes are among the better quality Japanese Motorcycles and are priced accordingly. They also hold there value a lot better than other brands.
The new 07 R1 is a brand new bike with some really hi tech features and it only increased $400 over last years model.

So we get better quality versions of Yamahas than the US, UK and Australia? This is the same old rubbish I got from my local dealer last year. We're being ripped off and you the dealers need to make Yamaha NZ aware that the internet opens peoples eyes to this NZ only price differential.

The reason the second hand prices are higher is because the new prices are higher. You are paying $3000 for this feature and they don't still hold a $3000 differential the next year. I wonder how many would rather have the bike more reasonably priced than a slightly higher resale value? I know I would.

I understand where you're coming from - if I had the 19.5K which is what most new thou's sell for.

I'd just go up to a yammi dealer and say - here's my money - that's the bike I want.

Take it or let me go buy a Gixxer/Fireblade/Ninja.

I seriously don't think you'd get turned down. - Or have you been turned down??

Threat to the what?

I know the mags all masturbate furiously over the GSXR but that's silly. The real world performance gaps between the various bikes are so infinitesimally small that 99.99 % of riders could never exploit them. If your name isn't Biaggi or Rossi forget it!

Interesting to note though, that in spite of all the rave reviews in the Brit bike mags about how the GSXR is lighter, more powerful, faster, etc. When it comes to plonking down the dosh the punters get discerning.

Apparently they like having the finish last more than five minutes, and so I was recently pleased to read that despite all the crap in the press, the clear winner biggest selling 1000 sprotbike in the UK is...

It's a threat to me in my view. I've owned 3 kawasaki's and one honda - so my next bike will be a zooki or yaa-man, meanin R1 04-06 or K5/K6 Gix thou. Ain't buying new. Thought of a gix 750 - but it costs the same as a thou - and I'll take my chances.

Ridden an 05 R1 and a new GSXR1000 demo.

The 05 seems big, long and not that nimble - but no big deal. AND IT'S THE BEST LOOKING BIKE EVERRRRR IN MY OPINION.

The gixxer feels like a 600 and is very, very easy for a "newbie to thous" to ride, and it has that slipper clutch again, newbie friendly.

It is a brilliant bike. A few of my friends who've been riding just a little bit less than I've been breating also agree.

The ZX10..... well I don't like the current model - am too scared of the 04/05 model and it's the same price as a K6 gixxer so yeah depending on what I find i may get an R1 or gix thou, dont give a rats left ventricle what the journo's say - it's my money and all i care for is how much the bike makes me go - f'ck yea - so far the gix thou is tops in that field.

Will be taking the new 07 CBR for a test ride as soon as they run their demos in - maybe next weekend...... life's great :wari:

Probably right at the rear wheel. Remember a couple of years ago all the jap manufacturers were claiming 150 to 160 hp (at the crank) but the mags tested rear wheel at 140 to 145hp. So the new Yammy claims to about 180 probably does equate to 162 at the wheel. My seat of the pants dynmometer on the new R1 gave a rating of..bloody hell! So yeah it's got more mumbo than my 2004 CBR1000RR had 2 years ago (and so it should). For me the R1 still can't justify $3,300 over say the CBR or ZX10. I don't know what the latest GSXR sells for?
Lets give credit where credit is due though. The Gixer is still the fastest bike..at depreciating. Who am I to talk though. I lose money each year changing bikes and changing brands - no regrets, life's short live it now, ride what turns you on. To hell with the economics and theory on why brand X is best for you.
I judge all my bikes now on my smile-o-meter. No other measurement counts for yip.

Tend to be abit cynical about what MCN print/post. Feel alot of their results are influenced by which manufacturer is spending the most on their advertising.
Aussie MC News tested the new R1, didnt read it as being a rave revue, metioned the handling had been improved but felt the engine was possibly weaker than the previous model. Alot of this fancy crap is just marketing hype and also a result of trying to keep the power they've got while ensuring the bike passes tougher and tougher emission controls.
Probably the best thing would be to own a 600, a 750, and a 1000. With the 07 GSXR1000K7 this is effectively what you are getting. The 3 way switch will allow 120hp (600) 150hp (750) 180? full power. How could you go wrong? :innocent:

No, I didn't try it. I used my money to buy a new car instead but I will be looking for a new bike again later this year and at the moment a Honda is looking pretty good.

It wouldn't cause any problems, maybe rob a little top end. Certainly far less problems than (the ever reliable) injection computer crapping out. I would be very surprised if the ecu wasn't controlling those anyway, so it's a safe bet that it'll be quite reliable. Much like injection, I expect the parts that'll give trouble are the mechanical bits (i.e. injectors, pumps, throttle position sensors, and the like).

Different matter on the track though aye?

Saw this bike in the flesh yeaterday and personally I don't like it. IMHO it's a styling step backwards. Looks like a bastardised version of an R1 and an R6. I guess it's not as bad as what Kawasaki did to the ZX-10R in 06 but disappointing none the less.

Didn't get a ride even though they had a demonstrator (someone else was taking it) so can't comment on anything but the styling.

Wenier

As i recall i think they all come with slipper clutches now, for the mention of the clutch earlier in this thread.

And the claimed hp of 190 odd is at the engine and they are all pretty close. The R1 has 162.9hp at the rear wheel which is the highest outa the jappas and the suzuki follows closely behind. But the GSXR has the best torque and a much nicier torque curve by far of all the jappas. Now this will mean that the guy on the R1 will be quicker down the straight but once you hit the twisties the GSXR will have the better more powerful drive out of the corners so will show up the R1 in that respect.
