Just wondering what sort of fuel economy people get out of their bikes. I am commuting on a single cylinder 250cc 4 stroke, and it is costing 4.8cents per kilometer. Which bikes are better/worse? how much does engine type/cc rating affect fuel consumption?

This is digging out a fairly old thread, but this was asked a while ago about 250's

Geez, I ride an 1800cc fatass cruiser - fuel economy? What's that dude?

But seriously, I find it just as good for mileage as my previous GSXR. How you ride it makes a big difference.

It appears my 24-25km/litre is pretty good.

Hmmmmm wonder if those two items are related?
I get 400km out of 15 litres. dont know how much that is.
On the TDR its more like 150km out of 15litres. That bike uses more fuel than it has a right to.

And I find fuel economy an invalid point anyway. While it may be less km/l on the bike than car, I travel WAY more km on the bike, just coz I feel like going for a ride.

I just  now when people say it must be cheaper to run the bike!

Edit: I think it is about 19 km/l tho

BUNGY

I get about 20km/l on my cbr which works out at about 7c per km. I think thats pretty good

Highlander

I get about 17 Km /l on the CB.

Cost of running including all maintenance, insurance, rego etc it is smack between my Odyssey and Mitsi Galant. worked out over 18 months of running calced back to $/Km there is about 5 cents difference /km from best to worst.

CB is by far the most fun though.

It appears my 24-25km/litre is pretty good.

My SRX250 used to return between 25 and 30kpl. Ridden fairly hard . About 80mpg in eal numbers. About what would be expected of a 250cc single.

BMW is absolutely consistent at 16.n kpl no matter how ridden. ffwabbitt varies wildly, from 18 to 24 kpl.

And then there are the two strokes. Don't ask, just hitch up the tank trailer. Maybe 10 kpl.

Well, yes, but engine capacity may have something to do with it. One would expect better economy from a 175 than a 750.

oil comsumption?

Ixion

Actually, though people don't always realise it, oil consumption on a two stroke is usually LESS than on a four stroke. It just gets consumed slowly instead of all at once.

KoroJ

Managed 19.1 Kms per Ltr or 5.5 Ltrs per 100Km (whichever you prefer) travelling back from Rotorua last weekend and that was carrying about 200kg (2 up with luggage).

Hmmm....why would I want a 250 machine to commute on.

McJim
3rd March 2007, 11:13
I get 340 km out of 13 litres - and that's in Auckland traffic. (better than 26km per Litre)

The VTR seems to compete favourably against the Mighty Ginny for fuel consumption.

I generally re fill the tank around 260-310km and have never yet used the reserve tap....

XT was typically 45mpg - 16 kpl - 6.3 l/100k
At best 57mpg - 20 kpl - 5 l/100k

R1200GS around traffic typically 41mpg - 14.5 kpl - 6.9 l/100k
Open road typically 48mpg - 17 kpl - 5.9 l/100k
Club rides up to 62mpg - 22kpl - 4.6l.100k....!

My F650CS regulary gets between 25-27 km/l. It varies between summer and winter with high beam lights and heated grips
On a trip up North, riding with 2 GN250s, I got 33 km/l, which is over 90 mpg! That was way better than the GNs!
Mind you, my wife's only gets 17.7 km/l ( 50 mpg) on her Honda Jazz.

Deano
3rd March 2007, 21:09
I get between 160-220kms per tank depending on how it's being ridden, (05 CBR1000) which is about $24 from near to empty.

I don't know how many litres that is, cause I don't really care - I bought it for fun not fuel economy.

I guess about as much as a small - medium car.

Me too.

Also, I didn't buy my bike because I wanted economy.
I had one (97 GSX600F) for economy. And it really was!
Sold it to get the current steed, 'cos I wanted to have fun on it.

Yep, the most I have ever put in it is $25 fuel (at it's peak, and it will only last 180 miles if I really nana it, usually 150 miles before reserve), but the amount I spend in rubber, pads, chain, sprockets, oil...... and so on.. and so on.. More than make up for it.

In fact I would easily spend more on my bike than on the ute.
The ute only does 10l/100k if I drive at 90 (and accelerate so slowly that the road kill moves faster).

:whocares:

Was getting 5ish L/100km on a zzr250, and hoped that by upgrading, my fuel economy wouldn't jump 1L/100km just by riding in the country. Got the ZX-7R, and I was right... for about 2 weeks. Then it jumped, but not as much. Except it never really got under 5.5L/100km, and was more like 6.5L. Worst ever was a really good ride in the country, where I scored more like 7.8L...

Who cares now, I just ride it until it hits reserve, then I fill again... Once in a while, I see how many k I can get on reserve (err... didn't fill up somewhere, and had to keep going, begging for a gasser around every corner :shit: )

When Suzuki released the 550 four, Two Wheels compared it with the 550 triple 2-stroke and oil consumption was even, as the oil-change intervals coincided with the MPG(oil) of the GT550.

Yeah, noticed that, as I get 60mpg on the C50T which is 21km/l. Incidentally, my Honda Legend, 3.5lt quad-cam V6 auto with the climate-air running most of the time checks out at 31mpg, or 11km/l! Great for a large car! That's mainly around town, so I'm interested to see what it will do on a long trip!

GB500 in its commute mode will do 19km per litre but that is only half the story.

The running costs just seem to be exceptionally low for this particular bike, I have never paid to park it and the rubber I run never seems to wear combine this with the small oil capacity and single spark plug it also make for very cheap maintenance.
Just warranted for another six months of boringly sensible problem free legal and polite transportation. yawn.

I get about 20kpl out of Brunhilda, but my favourite thing is that the fuel light doesn't come on for about 400ks. I used to have to fill the GN every couple of days - what a pain.

24th December 2007, 13:05
My CB400 which gets daily use hovers just under 20kml. Mrs Oakie's CB250FM (also an inline 4) which is not used for commuting seems to get 25kml fairly consistently.

My YZF750R lacks any kind of fuel economy, due in no small part to running so rich at idle that you'll get wet if you stand behind it...

Gets considerably less than 10k/litre.

Take the tank off, and remove the air filter top. There will be a rubber tube there if it's still standard about 50mm in diameter, give it the arse and your bike will go better and use less gas.

Aside from the bar ends that I'm just now in the process of buffing and re-painting - the bike is completely stock, so I'd imagine the tube is still there, thanks for the tip, what am I achieveing by removing it?

Done a fair few kms in the last few months and there is a marked difference between riding SH1 and back roads. SH1 stuff, where you have to fit in with traffic and go as slow/fast as it allows gives me 32+ km/ltr. Free riding, like Coro Loop gives 28ish and commuting down to 25.
I don't break speed limits very much so it's all about acceleration that makes the difference.

thats on a 1200

i used to get about 230 km on a 250 cc single dont recall the tank size it was a KLR trailbike then the reserve after that

really tends to depend on how much beans you're giving the bike..rode new TL back from palmy, 350kms or so, think its a 15 litre tank and i only had to fill it up once..on the way back for my new jacket i gave it a bit more of the death and saw very poor (read: total shit) mileage (kilometrage? silly french)..
with todays petrol prices i find its not worth bothering with when you've got a bike..gonna be cheaper than a car anyway, even if you ride it daily (mates car take $40/week, 1.8 corona/corolla/red cage, i'm filling $20-23 every 8 days and to-from work is 15kms)..

buy a big bike and enjoy it. :-)
