View Full Version : Wanted: Hiace engine
Van engine lunched itself on the way back from Paeroa. Just after I'd got all the bodywork and new tyres sorted :(
anyone have a hiace engine 2.4L petrol?
will also consider 2.8 or 3.0 diesel.
either that or is anyone want to make me an offer on a 1990 LWB Hiace? No motor, but everything else in good condition.

Have you tried NZ car parts in Porrirua, they have a huge range of engines
You might struggle,as courier drives tendto snap them up & the 2.4 petrol is a NZ model, not available in Japan
Let me know how you get on!!
Has someone told you what has happened to the motor,is it rebuildable??
Motor is toasted. It has broken the crank gear which drives the chain
possibility can fix but motor out strip down to see wots going on inside but
could be up for 2 to 3k to repair only. Probably easier to get a new motor.
I know they're hard to get hold of - tried the obvious places so far without any luck.

Have you looked down the road of a repower with a more common motor, you should PM Motu & get his opinion

Takes a bit to stuff one of those motors...but I've seen them do that, the crank pulley would of been loose for some time.We did one a few years ago, shit of a job because you have to pull the engine out.It was a taxi too,so shit of a customer as well....they want it tomorrow and always complain about the price and whatever else they can find.

Fucken customers and their constant complaining sometimes you just want to shoot the next fucker that moans about the price!! But apparently it's bad for buisness!!!

yeah. i think a previous owner had done a bit of a bodge job. pulley was tack welded to bolt so it didn't come loose - hence terminal failure. only found that out when picked pulley out engine tray and bolt was still attached.

Aren't they the same engine as the hilux's, plenty of trashed early 90's petrol Hilux's around if they're the same?

How much for the van?
wot he said.
Well i just spent a grand on getting the rust fixed (round windscreen and door pillar - common problem on hiace's.) That should be good for another few years. Got 2 brand new tyres on (goodyear i think), only done the trip to paeroa and most of the way back.
as for the rest it's in good nick. inside is tidy as it was a LWB minibus, never been a trade van. there's a slight dent at the bottom of the drivers door.
as i said above - what you reckon it's worth without engine? $1500?

Nah,dont sell the body, something will come up!!
Put one of those Lexus V8s in it,I know some of the japanese ambos come standard with them, that would be cool!!
thought about it. engine is easy enough, about $1000, but then you need ecu loom, mate to gear box, engine mounts etc. works about about $10k all up. I know someone who's done it, it's quite a bit of work. it might be fun though :)

well I've got a new engine - in fact a whole new van, 2.0l 5spd SWB.
the body is rusty as, so i'm ripping the engine and gearbox out of it and putting it in my old van.
the upshot if this is that I'll have a bundle of spare parts for the hiace. not going to hang around log - I'll sell what I can, then the rest is going to the skip.
some good bits are: 2 sliding doors and rear door, bumper, lights etc., interior (although i might replace some bits on my van if these are better).
PM me if you need any bits and I'll see what i've got......
