Hey i did my Basic Handling Certificate :done: today and got it YAY! Did a three hour confidence lesson first with JB Wright , was fantastic - cant believe how much i loved it. Was kind of leaving it up till then to decide whether to go ahead and get a bike dependent on how i felt about riding after the lesson and certificate. I loved it - didnt want get to get off the bike.
So am feeling very happy with myself, but unhappy with budget and was riding a CB250 and really liked it - and was budgeting for a GN mmmmmmmmmm what to do eh :)
So yay am on my way and cant believe how much i loved it and how good it was having the lesson/ride to go over all the bike stuff, stopping tips etc.

Congrats! I did my BH with that guy too, on the CB250, and loved it. But ended up with a GN due to budget constraints, but love it. It's a bike. Just get a bike. You'll love anything that's yours and can ride whenever you want, without having to be in Raro or wherever.

I am just learning to ride myself and have been wondering what you have to do for the learners, and didnt realise that it takes 3 hours! So do they actually show you how to ride as if you dont know!??

It doesnt have to take three hours. If you already know how to ride a bike, just the basic handling is 15minutes. 3 hours would be fully learning how to ride a bike as well.

When I did my BH, it took about 3 hours to complete. There were around 10 people in the group and we had to wait for them all to finish before moving to the next task
I even used my own 50cc Scooter. :scooter:

Mine was all by myself, and it took me only 15 minutes to get done. Depends where you get it done I guess :-p

Hey Slikchik, no it doesn't have to take three hours i just did the confidence lesson thingy first. You dont need to do that though :) I know some of the bike shops do the assessment so contact a few of them. I just wanted the whole thing to reacquaint myself with a bike.

Hey Lucy - exactly how i feel too - the budget i think dictates a GN but as you said is still a bike and thats the main thing. i will love it regardless Can get a bigger better when when have my full licence and more idea of what i really want.

I do recommend that course though - he is good....

Congrats to you!! i did my B H with him too, but i didnt get the 250 as there was a bigger guy there so i got a 125 something or other it felt like a scooter, anyhoo........can still remember how excited i was too pass also, and now i am also on a GN due to budget, but having a great time, apart from a bit gutless going up hills, they zip along at 100km no trouble, they are great to learn on.
good luck on finding yourself a nice bike.

haha...nice - I know how you feel....i did my restricted last week and i didnt think i'd be as happy as i was when i passed which made me feel goofy since i've had my learners for over 15 years and just never got round to doing the restricted lol
at least when you're an old bugger you only have to wait 6 months to do the full !!

Cool, I dont think I would mind doing the BH as well, I know I still have things to learn. Now I heard from someone that in Rarotonga you can go for your bike license and they give you your full then when you come to NZ you can convert it straight into your full bike license. Does anyone know if this is true!!?? (just so happens Im going to Raro for a hol)

Yeah but you still have to do the full practical test. Oh, and pay some money. I havent done it (yet) but do a search on here, there are threads about it.

I'd recommend a Yamaha Virago 250 for a first bike.... Not too heavy, not to light, Kellogs just right, A nice cruising bike that holds it's value well for when you take the training wheels off and want to upgrade.........Plenty of info on KB about them aswell, and plenty of members who will vouch for me on this ???........Congrats and we look forward to seeing you out there.

Hey thanks everyone!!! Now on to the bike eh !! Got my Learners today - very weird having to go through all that and getting a blue licence for car and bike despite having had my car licence for 24 years - how weird is that!!!!

But main thing is i got my bike licence !! YAY am legit now heheh.
Hey minnie good to hear you are having fun on GN as after much deliberatoin and actually alomst thinking i should go the 2nd hand virago track have decided that best bet is to get the GN and then trade up next year to a bigger bike rather than get the bigger 250 and not trade up - if that makes sense. Well thats what i think today - tomorrow may be a different story - especially after this weekend when am going to go test a few bikes - particulary a GN and a virago heheh. Ultimately i would like a triumph so need to keep focused on that - only need a good little bike for 12 months then go up to a bigger one then aftr that a Trumphy i hope - depending on $$ of course.. :)
