just curious.
remember a really quick trip to chch on my MC22 one day..

Yes, that is my normal method of overtaking a line of vehicles. Plenty of throttle and stay on the wrong side of the road for the shortest possible time. I then come back to normal cruise speed as soon as I pass the front vehicle.

I wish the cops saw it this way too... :(
You don't need a thou to do that when passing. And if you did have a thou, well, I don't think you would be doing any less than that.
I think I have passed cars at over 200...

Agree it's not good to be on the wrong side of the road for long....but the trade off is the speed diferential between you and the cars you're overtaking. Some prat decides to overtake/turn right/swerve round a duck/ turn onto the road and you have the thinking time and braking distances associated with 150+ it's not the simple 150+ - 100 makes it 50 kmh to scrub off. If you overtake slower relative to the traffic then you can choose an 'insert' point in front of each car you pass should you need to return to your side of the road and a gentle slide in is available to by just rolling off the throttle.

True. However I also don't take risks. I will only overtake a whole line of vehicles when: There is no likelyhood of any of the vehicles in front also trying to overtake; There are no side roads; there are no approaching vehicles. The duck one I can't account for, but is just as likely to happen when you don't have time to take evasive action, so its still safer to spend as little time as possible in the overtaking manouver.

5th March 2007, 06:13
Though legally you are still not suppose to go over a 100kph while over taking, I do shoot past a line and then button off to my cruising speed once the manover is complete.
Its the prats that don't keep a constant speed that is annoy, as soon as the realise they are about to be over taken they speed up...

The law is an ass - 'They' can not or will not accept that being on the wrong side of the road for the shortest time is the safe option??

With you on this one. The constabulary can see it as they wish but I'd rather be paying a fine or even walking for a month or two than never walking again or, even worse, being permanently out of circulation. I drive around 70,000ks a year plus a good 20,000ks on my bike, the experience of which has shown me that, while not guaranteed, my best options for survival lie on my side of the road.

I find it doesn't take much to get to 140 (maybe 2 or 3 cars) but 150 would be rare, maybe once or twice if ever.
I usually take cars 1 at time and just slide up the line and with more and more cars pulling to the left I find a lot of my passing is done at about 110 without even crossing the line

80km/h following the B-train = 150km/h as you pass the driver's window if I give it a handful.
But I'm always mindful that that sort of acceleration puts you into positions far more quickly than other motorists are expecting. Keep an eye on the indicators and other actions of those you are about to overtake, that is if they bother to indicate.

Sometimes if there are a few to get past and space is a bit tight, well hey, the less time in the danger zone the better.

This is an eyeopener for me - I regularly pass at those speeds - get the manoeuver over as quickly as possible.
My thinking around speed has to change. What I think is normal and what I have always done =- I get raised eyebrows!
I remember these guys asked me to join them on a ride - I needed new tyres so was taking it easy and also I wasn't in my full protection gear - even then I got pissed off they were only doing 140 and then braking around corners. Because I have always ridden on my own and self taught, I didn't know I was a good rider until someone with far more experience told me so, and proceeded to teach me more bike skills which have been invaluable.
Even after a major accident - Yes I have slowed down but still not enough. I'm working on it.

I know someone who regularly pass above 140km/hr on a 250 and if particularly long line of cars 150+.... if they had a 1ltr bike they'd frequently be doing more that that I'm sure...

bro, i caned that on my MC22!
-- na really I did or did I? () The luverly thing would pull till 160 easy with no hesitation then hesitate a bit until slowly reachin... uhmm 110kmph.
The time spent passing a vehicle is when you face a greater amount of risk than sitting behind or infront of it, the less time you spend there the better.
A MC22 is more than fast enough above 12k don't need a thou to do it.

had one of these on the way home Friday
- stupid, egotistical, arrogant MURDEROUS sod piddling around down the road then got all combative when i went to overtake him
- made the manoevre take longer [and therefore more potentially hazardous] than it needed ................... THEN the brainless twat was aggressively right up my rear when I came back to normal road speed afterwards, making little threatening rushes towards me
even at that slowish speed [hey - its a public holiday weekend and double demerits over here] i lost him through a series of curves [just by keeping a constant speed - nothing fancy] only to have him come tearing up the road at me, gesticulating and fuming once we hit the next straightish bit
- by this time he had turned a really unhealthy purple colour .... probably because i was obviously underwhelmed by both his driving ability and his pathetic attempt at bullying
anyway - i turned into my home road - a couple of miles of deserted, tree-lined, narrow country road ..... and slowed down progressively to about half normal speed as i got deeper into 'roo crossing' territory ....... it was then i noticed that, the more i slowed, the further he hung back ... until he was entirely stopped ............
and i realised that, suddenly, HE felt threatened - strange territory, spooky road at dusk, his 'prey' acting totally unbothered ..... [in fact, mebbe 'luring' him into trouble?] .. and the awful realisation that he'd left his balls at home ....
well - either that or he'd actually HAD that heart-attack that had been threatening for the past several miles ... :innocent: - must confess, i didn't turn back to check.......
[I]nahhhhhhhhh, NighthawkNZ, i don't like those prats much either ...........

try a modded zxr250c.... exceed that easy passing often.
on the litre bike it's less than a second of accel in 1st and you are past them and back into your lane.

I find i dont look at my speedo when im passing, i just floor it until i feel im going fast enough then pull back in and get about 50m infront of the car i have pasted then slow off to 100km/h or whatever i usually do..

Do it all the time, and more, but slow back to a normal speed once past.

My KR-1S is quite good at overtaking coza the sudden burst of power. It can't *really* go faster than 160kph I've found so that's my max overtaking speed. I'm getting a little worried about taking it back in forth between Wellington and Hawkes Bay tho... Time for a bigger bike I think.

Never mind the 1L jobs, me and a mate used to do it on our 150cc's while heading into tga. I hear that place is full of old people now - noticed all the roads from tga to kati are all 80kph.
Thats bullshit - we used to average about 150 every friday night. Ah what it was to be young and own a two stroke

problem with overtaking so many cars in one hit at speed, is ya need a lot of straight road to do it.. And if they're all going slow cos of something in front, and it's a nice long straight road, could be someone in a cage wants a go too, and stormin up the outside of them at pace, might not go down to well!
not that it ain't obvious, but still.. that's what gets me

I'm fortunate that I don't need much room but as your other point shows it can be bloody dangerous therefore it becomes a calculated risk.
Ride like people are trying to kill you and things generally work out...usually. Ride FAST in inappropriate places,well...
Re 150kmph....well ummmm, about to change into 2nd not that I am admitting doing such things on the rd....no never!

Iv found myself doing more than 150 on my 150cc, you don't need a 1000 to do it. Very rarely, and the throttle normally comes off pretty quick when I realise.
BarBender
5th March 2007, 14:49
I prefer to pick em off one by one.
But if I do a line (no...not that kind of line...:innocent: ) its usually 15 -20k faster than the traffic... That way they see me comming and I have enough premium to get to the next gasso.

5th March 2007, 15:03
as others have mentioned I have done that on my rg150, but what I tend to do if i'm overtaking a long line of cars is to switch the lights to highbeam, you don't blind anyone cause you next to them but it is easier to be noticed. I got a shock when I was riding the zxr down from auckland to palmy on the second day i had the bike and i had only ridden it the day before for about 10minutes. When i overtook a whole bunch of cars then looked at my speedo ... man was i doing well over the speed limit had to watch that the whole way down to palmy, if I had a litre bike .........:shit:

I've been in a couple of situations where cars and bikes have started to pull out while I'm overtaking them.
I'm sure that they check their mirrors before they pull out. But if you're going too fast then they'll never see you coming up behind them.
Be careful out there.

Riding the SV, I exceed that speed frequently when I overtake a line of cars.
Because I also aim to spend the shortest time possible in the wrong lane.
The reason I got the SV is coz I used to go far too fast when overtaking on the Gixxer thou. Although that time in the other lane was alot lot less.
You need another option: "Yeah! So what?"

5th March 2007, 18:29
Won't say, for fear that it may incriminate me! But will say, I've been two up with carrier pack in the gravel under power on the wrong side of the road through over-taking a line when a car from the mid-pack decided to pull out and take on the rest of the line (without looking obviously). I got him / he didn't get me! Luckily, I'd done it on a long straight with no oncoming. Oh and those were the days when they didn't grade angles down off the side of the roads! I would have been totally farqued if they did! Guess it didn't help in keeping that girlfriend either!

Not on a thou, but when I got the BMW F650CS, I pulled out to overtake a line of cars and trucks the first week I had it and was used to the RG150 in-and-out-and-up-and-down-the-gears method. Got past ALL the traffic in one manoeuvre and glanced down at the speedo... whoops, 170! I had a lot more respect for the bike after that, I wasn't used to rolling on the throttle and anything much happening!
Trust me, it doesn't happen that way on the Goose...!

Well I have to say that my partners VTR is certainly great at passing.
The power is certainly there to get you back in the right lane quicker.
We frequently pass long lines of cars on our many trips. Cant say I have ever bothered to look at the speedo. More interested in passing with ease and watching those damn stupid people in cages.
I guess our speed sometimes may exceed the speed limit by just a weee bit when we pass on a long straight with nothing coming the other way. :innocent:

I also find myself say the 3rd bike back, a few cars back, I get on the gas before the biggerbikes in front of me, so I can stick with them when they do decide to go

150? Considering that from 90k, a 1000 will hit 140+ before the front wheel clears ONE car in a top gear roll on, from a following distance of under two seconds.... well DU-UH!

I tend to find if you position yourself in the view of the cars side mirror with your lights blinding them, must will pull over to let you by. Others wont cause they're either blind, dumb, ignorant or all of the above, thats when you pull up beside them, chop it back and make them deaf aswell.

5th March 2007, 20:28
Hell, even if its just two cars and I drop a couple of cogs and gas it I'm doin over 150Km/h when I pass them. Your speed depends on how many cars/trucks in the line and whether you keep it pinned or not.
I was flying passed a long line once and unbeknown to me there was a copper amongst the cages. They didn't even bother to chase.:Punk:
But I always make sure there is 100m of clear road ahead when passing maneuver is completed:yes:

Sortov agree. Nobody warned me that kiwi drivers don't look in their mirrors (never mind turning to check their blind spot) before overtaking. My record back in Scotland was 13 cars on a GPX600.
