The site by the way, is all hilly and the venue is a sheep shed, with a fine aroma of dung, but its groovy as everyone is in the same place, so its well sociable.

I was one of 4 who were still in their tents whilst the rubbish was being picked up around us all, last year, so that shows it was a great rally!! thats when me and port became friends.

Sooo.... getting in before there are 368 postings of drivel in this thread and in a vain attempt to return it to being something about the rally...

I have never been to this one before either. I assume most tent and the sheep 'tanas and the lanolin are mainly in the shearing shed. And is the shearing shed used like an indoor venue for the band, bar, food and other forms of raucousness? How many usually turn up? So nice of the Hog to invite the hogless. Seeing as I missed the Hare this year (work made me go to Rarotonga !!) this one is looking like a goer.

Ya need some flash tent-pegs as it's a pretty rocky sort of site - and it has a lot of sloping ground but still o.k. if you scout around.

Shearing shed is used for the food'n'booze selling plus another part is used for the band and dancing.

Sheep grating makes having a slash easy for those that do it standing up, for the rest there are Port-A-Loos.

Nearest gas station, pub and dairy are about 3km away in Middlemarch.

Ride from Outram to Middlemarch is a good fun one with a variety of sweeping bends on sometimes steep hills with amazing scenery and a pub 1/2 way, the Clarkes Junction Pub (which I always come across unexpectedly).

There are essentailly two areas to camp. One among rocky outcrops, and the 2nd a grassy paddock backed by pine trees separarting the two. The woolshed has ALL the facilities, band bar etc. The Middlemarch pub (two blocks behind the main street) is the main collection point before the 3km to the site, but beware you will pay $7.50 for an RTD there, better $ @ the site.

Sounds like most of you guys are just planning on going up for the Sat & Sat night?? - is that right?

Yeah, Saturday only for me.

I've been to about three of these now (for some reason I lose count of rallies beyond one) and it is a very nice little rally.
I pitch up in the paddock behind the trees so that I don't have to worry about tripping over rocks in the middle of the night or trying to get the bike up the slope if it rains in the night.

The woolshed has two 'wings'.
One has the bar/food/meeting area.
The other has the band/dancing/frottering area.

There are two brilliant rides there.
One is the Pig Route and the other is the Outram-Middlemarch road which has 80km posted corners one after another and climbs up into some spectacular rocky scenery.
I'd suggest you go in one way and out the other.
I'll probably head up the Pig Route, back down to Dunedin and over through Outram on the way there so that I get both routes in the one day.

On the Saturday if you've got time there's also the ride through to McRaes pub to enjoy.

All-in-all a great part of the country.

And remember folks...you don't have to drink to enjoy yourself!

That is a bugger, but if you went anyway with all that going on then the bike has become an obsession rather than just a passion - its a lot easier to rationalize in arguments about a passion, so keep the brownie points for another day. Its a shame 'cos I was looking forward to that ride we talked about.

Personally I don't know whether I'll get there or not with school holidays etc etc. I'm still hoping to scoot up for the Sat night but I won't be registering until on the day - I've worked up in that area, its an extreme climate and I know what the wind in particular can be like and I'm not riding up there if its blowing its nuts out.

About time this gay man hugging fucking bullshit finished - I'm sure there was actually a reason for this thread but it seems to have got lost somewhere and it sounded like most of you writing this crap aren't going anyway???!!!

As it happens the 14th is also the same night the Highlanders play the Crusaders at Carisbrook - got some mates coming down for it and I would hate to miss out on the (unlikely I admit) possibility that we could send them away on a 4 hour return trip after a southern humiliation.
While its much more likely that I will have to bring out the usual line about it taking much greater character to support a team that doesn't always win the big games...., from an area that doesn't have the big resources to buy the talent they lack........... there is still that chance we could do it and provide a rare opportunity to humbly ... stick the knife in:Punk: :done:

If you guys want to greatly increase the number of rallies up there, the key to it is probably remote country pubs eg Whangamomona. A lot of the rallies in the Sth have some connection to a pub - for some reason they must think bikers are good for business, can't think why:innocent: - pick some pubs in good locations and get the publicans to talk to some of their Sth Island counterparts.

My experience up here is first stop at pub with atmosphere why leave. You wouldn't believe how much some of them can get down each stop for a card. And they still get to the site at the end. Unbelievable. and they get faster than me as the day goes on

Yes they do and the boy that I'm holding is called Caesar at the moment. (I like that name)
And yes we want him, he is 10 days old and the eyes are just trying to open and that's why we are going down again this weekend (two weeks on) to see what he is like.
We all so like another called Widgit a bitch, but are unsure if we want 3 dogs in the house.
And the food bill for the two Wolf Hounds and a Collie would be like feeding 7 normal sized dogs. Ouch.

I figure that we "bottom half types" can go to a rally nearly every 2-3 weeks during the summer and probably 1 per month during the winter. If they are supported then they are likely to continue. If you NI'ers support the very few you have then others may SPAWN from these.

Na I think some of the good ones got too big , they had problems put the price up ie $45. Never had that one again , everyone grizzled but now its not there cos numbers were down. Typical Nth Island apathy. Some of the others are struggling too I think, it takes quite a dedicated team to organise them. I reckon if the prices go up you gotta pay or lose the rally. Sometime the price of the booze hurts but, they gotta make some money.

No gravel - just lots and lots of corners and a couple of big descents and climbs - there is an alternative route through a bit of private road that comes out at the Pukerangi Railway station that has a fair bit of gravel if you're keen and get permission.

Sounds good to me will see what the other dayriders are doing... may be quite a few of us so may have to split the group up a bit but all up in the air will do some ringing around and see who's coming for daytrip etc and who's not

The long range forecast at the moment has a polar blast coming through on Thurs with strong cold SthWesterlies and snow to fairly low levels. Showers clearing on Friday. This should mean it will be relatively fine on Saturday, maybe still a bit windy but be prepared for it to be farking cold up at Middlemarch - so if you were dithering about putting on those hotgrips or buying some thermals just get it done 'cos you'll need them.

Yup, got me woolly Y-fronts sorted!

Bur seriously, even when it's fine up in Middlemarch the temperature can be 'brisk' to say the least.

Seen a wet truck-deck being used as a stage ice-up on front of my eyes at one rally there.

Ahh not sure quite how to put this - lets just say that after the forecast I saw tonight I formally withdraw my expectations of an improvement on Saturday - hopefully it'll affect the Crusaders more than the Highlanders
