I have noted a comment on another thread that indicated that loud horns might be a reason to fail a WOF. I have just had a Stebel fitted. It generates 139 dbs. The comment in the other thread was that you should keep the original horn to enable you to pass the Warrant. Can anyone confirm or deny?:nono: or:yes:

I have no idea, but I wouldn't be at all surprised. The SafetyNazis/Nannies(TM) seem to be spending all their time dreaming up fucking stupid laws to "make the world a better and safer place" (i.e., totally fukt.)

Not a big deal for me - if I pull the fuse labelled "horns" in the BlueSea fusebox under my bike seat, the OEM horn will go and the dual Fiamms won't.

There's nothing at all in the manual about being too loud. It ahs to be audible from 100 mtrs. that's it.

From the VIR manual

REASONS FOR REJECTION

Mandatory equipment
1. A motorcycle:
a) is not fitted with a horn, or
b) is fitted with a bell or whistle (Note 2), or
c) is not an emergency vehicle (Note 1) and is
fitted with a siren (Note 2).

Performance
2. The horn does not operate when activated.
3. The horn operates when not activated.
4. The sound from the horn is not steady and
continuous, eg the horn plays a tune.
5. The horn is not audible at a distance of 100 m.
6. A siren fitted to an emergency vehicle operates when
not activated.

Toot to pass.

What does a too loud horn sound like? If you hold your thumb on the button for 30 seconds I'm sure someone will get real pissed off,but just a toot will do the job. Those roof mounted truck air horns are pretty damn loud if you keep them going for a long time in a small building too.

Thanks for that Guys. I thought that was probably the case but you can never be sure. The main reason I did it was for safety. Wanted my presence known. It works!!! and I don't abuse it.

It's one of those things: if it sounds too stupid to be believable, then either it's true, or it will be soon.

But don't worry: one day, when I'm UberHighCommander/God, I will abolish all laws, and bring back Commonsense, Natural Justice, Common Decency, and all those good things.

why do people actually bother with outrageously loud horns in the first place?

cars that change lanes without looking or indicating. pedestrians that walk out without looking, cyclists that ride in the middle of the lane.

Anyone on or near the road that looks like they might possibly, perhaps be vaguely thinking about doing something that they ought not. Or not doing that which they ought. It's a good them that horns don't wear out.

I only use the horn for the purpose for which it is designed. When I need to get someone's attention I want to ensure there is no doubt about my presence. If you sound like a Vespa, people will think you are a Vespa. If you sound like a Mack truck you will have their immediate attention and they will probably be taking action to move away from the sound before they do any investigation as to the source. I want a cage to have a "FAR CANAL" reaction rather than "Where did that come from, Oh Well shrug" and just keep going.

I have only had to use it once. A woman power walking and connected to an Ipod was about to walk out across the road into which I was about to turn. A short blast brought her back to the here and now, had her immediate attention and stopped her in her tracks.

It is another of those tactics for self preservation.

Because I CAN.
(Or is that "because I HORN"?)
Once you've got a big horn, you'll wonder how you ever lived without one.

I fitted an airhorn on the hyobag. I don't know how anyone can not have a horn that is excessivly loud. It's great for when people ALWAYS try and pull out into the gap where you are situated. They have no idea you are in that space at all (even if you have a bright yellow bike and are 6'3"). The horn lets the entire neighbourhood know that you are in that space and don't appreciate muppets trying to occupy it. I love it.
