ive always used Casrol, ive had a shitload i stocked up on 7 years ago, which has now run out, in this time they have changed the formula, and now its real thick and not nice to use.

so the time has come to move on to something else.

what do you use? how is it? and how much is it?

I use the UNI filter service kit, comes with spray on oil and cleaner.

I have also had good success with NoToil, very easy to clean (washing machine). I would probably still use this if i wasnt sponsored by UNI.

I heard that all the spray on oils are shit.

I found the Putoline suff ok.

Belray is the all time tackiest, and provides good protection, but is hard to apply. Motorex is easier to apply, but can dry out after a few weeks if not used. I use Motorex with filter skins, and when the last filter skin is used and if the filter feels abit dry I spray the filter. The sprays by them self I don't feel are suffiecient for many applications. Ok if conditions are not dusty or sandy. And No Toil is water soluble. Go figure. Guess I'm old school, but I've never lunched an engine.

I find NoToil is not soluble in any bloody thing! Get it on your hands and you can't wash it off in solvent, hand cleaners don't work....it's just messy shit.Good filter oil though.Actualy,if no one is watching I will just use EP gear oil, sticky as,stinky, and I've always got some around somewhere. But you don't get stickers to put on your swingarm - so you need to buy a brand name filter oil to get the good stickers.

Over the years I have found the Putoline kit real good.

You get one large (with a screen) and one small bucket with solvent, filter oil and filter grease.
Because they make both the oil and the solvent, it works.
You may find that it is a good idea to buy an extra bottle of solvent so you can really drown the filter to clean it.

Also not a fan of No Toil, as some people love it and a lot think that it is crap.
It could be good stuff and it could be down to how some people are using it.
So I'm not taking the risking.

NO cheesee the spray on oils are NOT shit, you just need to apply them properly (like any of the filter products). Maybe you should start talking from experiance, not from "what I heard".

If you do the filter after every ride (every race if very dusty) and do it right, you should really have no issues.

Filter skins can be a good idea as well, especially doing an enduro ride or similar where you may not have time to change a full filter.

i hjave alwasy liked bel-ray, it stays tacky for ever, it is hard to apply but with gloves its ok, i have never liked the thinner oils like putolene etc,

the putolene cleaning / oiling kit is awesome tho, i use one of these with bel-ray oil,

I'd rather take the advice from the bike shop and not use the spray and not blow up my engine as an experience. I've had enough experience blowing up bikes. :brick:

i have been trying a DNA paper type filter for a while, i ran it in my motard bike and it was awesome, ill get back to you when i have tried it on dirt, i ahev been told they last for ages before they need servicing

in the end, any air filter oil is only as good as the guy putting it on, i have used spray on stuff in the past and had no problems, however i use bel-ray casue thats what i like,

Quick question guys. I've been using the Spectro spray on filter oil. How saturated should the filter be? I cover the entire filter inside and out and squeeze the living shit out of it but can never seem to get out any excess. Is this a good sign?

NordieBoy
8th March 2007, 08:56
I was using the Spectro ('till I ran out).
1. Filter into a bread-bag.
2. Spray in oil and squish it around.
3. Repeat 2 'till happy.

How tacky is the Unifilter oil?
I've got a Unifilter in my VFR, but use Spectro filter oil, and it's like glue, so I've actually held off on using it, partly because the filter is off-road foam, rather than the more open foam for road use.

thats what all the filter oils go like, most have a blending agent that evapourates off to make it sticky

i also told him that. a big mob of us from gisborne used to travel around the country racing everywhere, and PJ1 Spray on oil became available, we all started using it, none of us had siezed bikes until we began using this stuff, yes we squeezed it thru etc, but it was just so thin and crap compared to the castrol stuff - before they made it usable some time in the late 90's, then some of the guys lunched top ends. needles to say this was the end of any of the crew using pj1 spray on filter oil.

in conclusion. spray on is crap. that is my opinion and im sticking to it. as its not sticking to much.

Do you get stickers?

You do.

http://www.putoline.com/en/product_detail.asp?nav=misc&cat=6&prod=offroad&prodId=1&catalogId=117

I think that the spray on filter oil is good for road bikes and I do us it.
But on our off road bikes, I like to make sure that it really gets oil all the way though the whole filter.
And the easiest and cheapest way is to drown it and squeeze.
And I like to use Filter skins as well.

Yes I do, but on the chain.

I use spray on oils for fabric filters, because you cant squeeze them.I have red oil for K&N and green oil for Green filters.Next time I do my Pajero filter I will spray one half red and the other half green....then I will know which colour filter oil is best.Next I have to get a PJ filter because they are blue....then I can test blue oil.

I use the spray on oil, on the K&N and the S&B's on the old Guzzi's because they have a wire frame and you can not squeeze them either.

I have been using the Uni spray on for ages and have never had a problem, just make sure you spray it on properly and clean it after every ride if dusty.
