View Full Version : Steering head bearing or bung suspension?

I have a stange problem with my front forks. When i compress the front forks through heavy breaking, I get a loudish knock about halfway through the resting compression to the maximum compression. I don't think its loose brake pads moving back and forwads because I can be travelling for a distance braking lightly without any knock, but then when i brake hard (compress the forks) i get that bastard knock.
I have also raised my bike to check for a worn head steering head bearing but there seems to be no play in it at all? Could this be something within the forks causing the knock?
Any suggestions?
Ta.

head bearing on mines gone poo... It knocks, especially at slow speed and or sudden changes in speed. Also knocks during countersteering practice at low speed. But when I try and wiggle anything around nothing moves.
They are meant to be a tad tricky to do I think though. ie, tightened up to exact specs.

Do you need a special tool to tighten the steering head bearing tension?

Just got back from Henderson Motorcycles (great shop) and the luvly lady in the workshop (yeas shes a lady) had a look at my head bearing and said it was just worn, and I could simply tighten up the bolt until it stops 'knocking' but not too tight that the steering begins to stiffen (best done on centre stand). She said it wasnt completly smeged just 'getting on abit' - so a replacement would be needed I imagine in the next 6 months or so...
Hope this helps you too.
Righto... wheres my socket set...

That is rubbish, pull it apart and check them, if stuffed replace, if not, Re pack with a ton of greese and re tighten correctly
The grease in my head bearings had gone hard and they felt like they were stuffed.
I cleaned all the old grease out of them before I re-packed them and they felt like new.
