,It doesn't really affect me, as we commute in the car, but boy is it shitty weather at the moment or what?

I feel for you guys who ride to/from work. The high for today is forecast for 7 degrees. It's currently hailing, and last night we had sleet, which I'm sure was very very close to snow - the neighbours car was white. And this is supposed to last for another four days.

I'm wearing one of my Icebreaker thermal tops to work this week!

Sorry to grizzle on when you South Island guys have got it far worse than us.

I left home at 6am and it didn't seem to bad. A strong head wind but nothing from the side. Wasn't raining much either.

Just spoke to my wife and it looks to have got worse so I probably left at the right time.

It sure is a bit unpleasant out there. The bike was getting pushed about a bit by the wind on Petone Esplanade but not too wet. I think the extra pair of socks and heated handgrips did the trick. Mind you that car heater and radio would have been nice.

Woke up, listened to the forecast for snow, gale force winds, and hail, and decided this would be the second time this year I'd take a pass on riding.

Coming into work down the route from Hataitai to Marjoriebanks Street, I felt kind of justified with the slips of crap across the roads and the wind making the car buck at the intersections. That and the tick layer of ice on my street from the earlier hail.

Isn't it just glorious outside? There's a bit of solid stuff colliding with my office window (that looks south down The Terrace). Fantastic!

Followed some keen L-plate rider into town this morning. They were wearing street shoes. Brrr! Must like wet socks. Me? I was in the air-conditioned comfort of the Impreza listening to Radio Hauraki...

Hope to get lots of Pms later !!!!

I just got in about 10 minutes ago, riding from Upper Hutt to Wellington.

Quite a strong headwind, as expected, probably 70-80km/h, gusting a bit higher in places.

The wind was getting pretty strong and getting under the fairing, something I hadn't had too many times before. It seemed like it might have been picking the bike up a bit; maybe it was just my imagination, but the front wheel was definitely feeling lighter, and the wind cutting from side to side was giving the bike a tiny bit of headshake, easy countered.

As for the cold, I didn't feel it at all. My wet weather gear is warm.

It's supposed to get a lot stronger tonight, but at least the wind will be at my back then.

Shit yeah it's ccold, I've had my fire going since about 17:30, full blast, and it's still cold in my house! And, earlier on, I looked out the window, and there was an odd, saucer shaped object on top of my garage roof! Went out to look, and it was a bloody heavy, water logged, rubber and foam table cover, which had caught wind, and flown from where it lived, to my roof! Luckily it landed safely, if it had hit a window, it would have become a permanent feature of the house!

Now, just gotta get used to the house shaking, and the roar of the wind rushing up through the fireplace chimney

The rimutakas look like an interesting ride, from the nightline footage! Might take it easy next time I'm up there, and keep an eye out for any ice

Yeah - I had a bit of a mission ride back from Uni today and once I got inside I found I had ice on my jacket! Must've been sleet I guess. This weather really isn't the best fun in the world. On Sunday I'll escape down to the sunny west coast for a Uni field trip! Weird eh - the west coast is actually much better weather for once (judging by what the weather lady says)!

Jim2 - are you just doing that one paper at Uni? I've got a 5pm lecture too but at least they give us tea/coffee and bickies.

Yep just the one. I've only got time for one per semester. We get tea & coffee and biccies too, so that helps.

My face nearly froze off on the way back down the hill to the car at 8pm.

Got home and no power. It didn't come back until 4 am either. Straight to bed, no tea, and bloody hell it's cold without heating.

Bit of perspective here.Boscastle in Cornwall here last night, over 130mm of rain in 2 hours,3 houses totally washed away, loads of cars washed out to sea,15 people un-accounted for but hopefully buggered off quick rather than hurt.Trees up-rooted and washed through the high street,8 rescue helicopters winching people from their roofs, top floor windows e.t.c virtually a whole village trashed and similar, though not so extreme, story further along the coast........now that`s shit weather and this is the height of the Summer holiday season as well.A memeber of the public shot some video footage that looks like that Yank disaster movie doing the rounds now, except this was for real, really awesome seeing all the cars being washed down the street.

Wow! What a ride!

Left at 7.30 this morning - I wanted to go in the light, instead of the usual ride in darkness.

Very very strong winds, and so much rain its not funny.

Got completely soaked, especially when the waves came over on to the motorway.

Gini didn't want me to leave, especially when morning report stated winds were gusting up to 200km/hr on the motorway.

But in the end it was handleable. The wind knocked me around a bit, but a 230kg bike is pretty hard to shift in the wind.

I would say you can still ride Cathy, but be VERY careful on that little bike.

Hey Lynda, bottom of the Kelson hill eh?!!

Poor contractor standing in a foot of water trying to unclog a drain. No signs out, though I suppose they’d blow away. Anyone not paying attn coming from the south & turning into Major drive will be up to their wheel arches trying to negotiate a 90 degree corner. I shudder to think what would happen on a bike!

Thanks Simon but it didn't happen in the end b/c a tree has fallen down & blocked the track that I park my bike at the top of  , so not only was I late for class I had to borrow money & catch the stinky bus (waited for at least 20mins for it to come!) and then arrive at class & we only ended up staying for about half an hour instead if till 12.

Hopefully it will be cleared by 4;30 ish but there is a tree down on the mtotorway northbound lane just north of Maungaraki (again - I thought they fixed that problem last time). Lots of cars backed up at 0815. Traffic being diverted thru Petone via Korokoro bridge.
Also big flood on northbound (again) lane of Motorway near BP gas station.
A bit of preventative maintenance to the drain holes under the media barrier would have prevented a lot of this - you can see water coming through maybe one in five holes.

Latest update is...

Storm update 11am – windows go in Basin Reserve

• The Basin Reserve has been closed to the public. About 15 windows in the R A Vance Stand have been blown out – and glass fragments have been blown out into the roadway. It is feared more windows could be blown out. People are advised to stay away from the area.

• Electricity has been cut to many areas of the city as falling trees and branches bring down power lines.

• Takapu Road, a rural road near Tawa, has been closed by flooding, slips and fallen trees.

• Moa Point Road remains closed due to huge seas breaking over the southern end of the Wellington Airport runway.

• The road from Seatoun to Breaker Bay has been closed at the Pass of Branda due to water and debris

• Stewart Duff Drive, on the eastern side of the Airport, is closed because cladding is being blown off a hangar.

• Makara Road and Ohariu Valley Road closed by fallen trees and power lines.

• Council Parks staff have closed off the walking tracks on Tinakori Hill due to the danger caused by many falling trees.

• Panels have blown off two buildings at Queens Wharf on the waterfront, and windows have been blown in at the former Herd Street Post Office Building. People are advised to stay away from the area.

City Council Infrastructure Manager Stavros Michael says damage and disruption around the city and region is significant. “The city has taken a right old battering.”

He says the Council’s Call Centre has handled several hundred calls this morning. “It’s been as busy as it gets.” He says Call Centre staff have dealt with more than 40 reports of fallen trees, 30 reports of power lines down – and scores of other incidents.”

Just had bacon, egg and cheese toasted sandwiches cooked by moi at home - choice - but went for a cruise around the 'burb earlier and have never seen so many fallen trees, wrecked fences and tiles off rooves before. Plod was blocking one street moaning that water was too deep and he'd already had to pull two dead cars out. So far only damage at home is one of the largest aluminium bars has been rooted on my TV aerial and has fallen off and one paling has blown off a fence. Daughter is keeping me company - she couldn't see any point in going to school.

I should know I used to ride to college at Rongotai from Pukerua Bay everyday for a year and the wind out there used to pull monsoon sheilds off cars no probs !! You didn't so much ride as tack your bike !! The weather here is not too bad ... almost no wind and we have sunshine for the first time today ..... It'll all change at 3pm though always does just as the kids leave school.

My friend was just telling me he was going home last night when he came up behind a boy racer with a whale tail....

BIG gust ripped it clean off the car and smashed it into a gazzillion bits on the back of a courier van.......

Just about to tuck into a nice cool scotch ... from its new location in the little hallway between kitchen and bathroom. Nice ...

The ride home was surprisingly good. As mentioned, the wind was directly behind me, going about 120km's I reckon, as there was just a tiny bit of wind at my back. Except the crosswinds, which are fairly wicked.

Conditions in the last half hour.

Welly motorway is okay, no problems at all.

As you get just past the Ten Pin Bowling and Petone Station the flooding has receeded, no worries.

Korokoro lights are out; I guess the power's still out there.

From Korokoro through to Kennedy Good bridge turnoff is the worst. Lots of flooding, at least four slips over one lane, one going across all lanes which is okay to ride over (mostly mud over the inside lane, outside lane about four to six feet of mud, trees, etc). Fulton Hogan crews working hard. One lonely policeman with a shovel trying to clean up the stormwater drains. Good onya mate!

Hutt River is up past the trees on the stopbanks.

If it continues like this they will quite likely close parts of the Hutt Motorway this afternoon..... man did I get soaked going home.

Enjoy your day everyone. Just ordered the new Peter Pan movie on Sky and Gini, Tim and I are settling in for a nice cozy afternoon at home.

Please tell me that I was not the only stupid one out there this morning??
I was on a CBR600 and man was it raining! I could not even find my thermals!
It was not too bad. Peikok Hill was dodgy! windy, flooding and slips everywhere! Were nice lines of pine needles to dodge too.
Waiting for home time, (I bet its going to rain just as I go outside.)
If anyone see's a harlequin cbr600 around tonight, dont mind me swirving everywhere in the wind! Its out of my control. :spudwhat:

...The wind knocked me around a bit, but a 230kg bike is pretty hard to shift in the wind. I found the FZR was pretty good in strong winds. The YZF is not quite as good.

Well we still didn't have power when I left home for Uni this morning. We lost it on Tuesday night. Don't know if it's back yet (I'm at Uni at the mo). Thank goodness for the wood burner is all I can say!
On a diff note - the weather's pretty good now eh?! It hasn't rained for a while and the trees outside aren't moving (let alone snapping in half and taking out windows!) AND there's SUN! The real live stuff! Well, something bright occassionally flashes through the window anyway.

Yeah the sun is out but apparently there is a dirty big slip on the Hutt Road near Horokiwi blocking both north and southbound lanes. Traffic is banked up Ngauranga gorge. I'm off to Upper Hutt now but will be going via Porirua and Haywards.

Both lanes?? That would be impressive. As the rail is next to it is that still ok? Neither Trans or Hutt websites seem up to date about this.
