Hi honey.. I'm home!! :Punk:
Maaan.. did I have one wicked day today!!!
Set off bout lunchtime.. destination.. over the famous Takaka Hill!! on me own today.. all the other local buggas are doin the Dusty Butt ride today.. but hey.. that's cool.. I just cranked the music up another notch or two & sang at the top of me lungs!! :innocent:
Anyway.. beeeeeautiful day abound, the bike was humming & the traffic was relatively minimal! Wicked run up & over the hill.. with a plethoria of boot scraping a happening!! Stopped in Takaka for a wander, then onto Collingwood for a cold one in the garden bar at the pub. If ya haven't been there.. ya just gotta put it on ya top 10 list of rides!!! it's absolutely devine!!! overlooking the lagoon & it's ssoooooo peaceful!!! & the road between Takaka & Collingwood is superb!!!
Back on the road & headed out to Puponga, & the cafe overlooking Farewell Spit! Sat for a while enjoying the peace & looking through the big binoculars, watching the multitude of black swans that cover the bay.. thousands of them!!
A few bikes on the road.. all going the other direction!!
4pm by now & time to start heading back towards home. Have made mental note to self by now to add more bloody songs to mp3  !!! Quick ride straight back to Takaka to top up the fueltank, then back up & over the hill. Timed myself from the site of the old Rat Trap pub, to the Riwaka pub.. 24 minutes. Several years ago, a mate on his xs850 did the run in 18 minutes.. 22 minutes with me on the back, & he KNEW that hill like the back of his hand.. so I figure my 24 minutes is pretty respectable!!
Home about 6.30.. with a sore butt!! haha. 390ish ks.. (according to count up on map) another mental note to self.. MUST get speedo drive replaced!!
So there ya have it.. Jen's day out. & hey.. guess what.. gunna do another one tomorrow... YEAH BABY!!!!

Mid to late 90's.
But you're still old.
I used to live in Pohara.
I still see the "Rat Trap" letters on the roof of the pub as I go around Eureka Bend and start heading down even though the pub isn't there anymore.

Four Auckland lads did the Takaka hill in Feb, when on the Sth Island safari.. Whizzed over and had a swim at some beach and whizzed back to recover over a pint in Motueka. Awesome ride for anyone down that way. Stopped on the way over to take in some views at a viewing point on the western side on a tight bend and the funniest thing happened. We watched a couple of bikes spiral their way up the hill and when they got to us one friendly rider, mid-bend on a triumph cruisery type bike, gave us a big friendly over the head wave at the instant his front end gave up and dived. Poor guy nearly crapped himself as he came so close to an off. A good recovery I might add. You Nelson types sure have a nice backyard.

The owners wife burnt the place down after a scrap.....bitch. I have two things to remember it by. A jar of ashes and the CD sign (2 mtrs x 2 mtrs) off the fence.
A sad day I went up the weekend after it burned down with a mate who grew up in Takaka and drank a beer in the ashes and had a wizz in the urinal which was still there. It was a big part of the community. It was all that Upper Takaka had.

As you come of the Takaka hill the first house you come to on the left is on the Ratty site, It was moved from the hydro village to there a year after it was torched. The booze licience was transfered down the road to the community hall and renamed "the club" a good quiet place for a drink in the evening.
It was a two story place with veranders running around both stories and a huge "RAT TRAP" in white painted on its green roof you could read as you drove down the hill.
I remember many times being sent to the pub in my jammies to get the old man and ending up at the end of the bar with a bag of chips and a lemonade while the phone rang on unanswered..........many cold tea's because of that place.

Yeah good old days of my dogs better than yours, high country muster talk, how many hp the next tractor will need to tow the feedout wagon. Fights in the carpark when rival rugby teams meet up for a quick one before heading over the hill in the bus. It was just "one of those pubs" and some crazy cow burned it down out of spite.

My dad grew up in Upper Takaka, before moving up to Wellington, so have spent a fair amount of time in Motueka/Takaka region. IOne of my Dad's best friend (Dave Harward) owns the house literally 50 m (if that) from the club (which is still referred to by some locals as the RatTrap incidentally). I myself have spent a few good nights at the pub there and had a great time. Such nice people around that area. I believe the roster for the bar rotates between locals (or at least it did last time I visited for a wedding down there). Love the area, and have only met awesome people down there.
