Brilliant!

I see the St Louis SX is showing on SKY at various times this weekend.
Did he ride that one? If so, I'll make a point of watching - and will start looking-out for the other events as they are shown.

Way to go Ben! Yeah he won last week too. Thats two in a row. He was in 2nd at the first round until his Kwaker grenaded. One day Ben will be the fastest rider in the USA. I'm sure off that. And sooner rather than later.

I definetly would love to see Lange win a Supercross, that being said, BT has been waiting a long time for a win in America and I'm glad to see it come together for him.

Torrent download speeds depend on how many other people are downloading it at the same time (leechers), the more leechers the faster your download should be. So your slow speed could be caused by the lack of leechers. Torrents for sporting events would no doubt slow after a couple of weeks because people usually download them straight away.

Also check that you have your upload limit it set fairly high. It shouldn't take longer than a day even if there are hardly any leechers.

P.S It was a fucken great race, if you don't see it your going to regret it.:dodge:

Its a big file 1.36 gig which was even slow on broadband . The way you share the file means unless you change preferences you will upload more of it than download as heaps of people are after it . I have just finished it after 20 hrs on and off and I'm putting it on a disc . From what I've seen so far its worth it about 90 mins and ad free.

Press release:

Tough time for Townley at Orlando Supercross.

The fourth round of the AMA Superscross Lites East coast championship has been tough on Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki’s Ben Townley. The Citrus Bowl in Orlando Florida saw the 22-year-old New Zealander gunning for his third straight SX Lites victory when a controversial maneuver by Californian, Billy Laninovich, put Townley out of the running on lap 9 of the main event.

After the tangle, Townley managed to pick himself up and got back into the race in 10th spot. ‘BT’ used the remaining laps on the board to salvage as many positions and championship points, crossing the finish line in 7th place.

“I had a rough night” admitted Townley “ In the first practice I was a bit off the pace but I managed to improve in the second one - I still wasn’t running the lap times I wanted. I personally think the track got better as the night went on however there were still some parts of the circuit I needed to dial in. I didn’t get a good start in the heat race but managed to come through the pack pretty well and I ran some fast lap times which put me in a positive frame of mind for the final. After the re-start, I had a reasonable jump and moved up to third. I found my rhythm and closed down Laninovich and Jesseman up front. I got past Laninovich for second but then he took me down in turn two which I didn’t expect.”

With 3 rounds still remaining Townley still occupies 3rd in the points standings with a 14 point deficit over championship leader Ryan Morais. The following round of the championship moves to the RCA Dome in Indianapolis next weekend.

BT had not made a complete pass - he was carrying too much speed drifted wide and had to square off. This let Laninovich back inside him and he paid the price. I don't think it was a dirty move at all.

i think Lange and BT rode a very good race, close, but they never touched once, i think it was some of the best clean racing i have seen in ages,

Press release:

Townley closes in on championship lead after Indy Supercross.

The RCA Dome in Indianapolis set the stage for the fifth round of the AMA Amp’d Mobile Supercross Lites, East coast series. In front of a crowd of over 54.000 spectators, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki racer, Ben Townley, closed to within ten points of the championship lead after finishing second in the 15 lap final.

Townley’s evening was not without incidents however when he collided with Branden Jesseman’s rear wheel in his qualifying heat, hitting the stadium floor quite hard. The resilient Kiwi managed to rejoin the race with a mangled motorcycle, still earning himself a spot in the final.

From a wide starting position BT grabbed a good jump and with late breaking into the first turn he emerged second behind Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey. Both Townley and Dungey matched each other lap for lap with back markers splitting the two around lap 10. Townley tried a last minute effort to close the gap but had to settle for second place.

“I felt way more comfortable on the track tonight and had better qualifying times which is one the biggest things I wanted to work on from last weekend. I found my groove much quicker. I knew I had to get the jump for the main and I did. I stayed right on Dungey for about ten laps and felt comfortable at that point. I was trying to find bit more of a second wind going into the last five laps but I got caught up with a couple of lapped riders and lost my rhythm. I’m a little disappointed, we were obviously really close on lap times all day – I just didn’t have that little bit extra,” explained Townley.

Townley has moved to second in the championship standings and with the penultimate round of the Supercross Lites, East coast series moving to Dallas Texas next week, the New Zealander’s title hopes are still more than alive.

So he needs a couple of places in front of Morias to take it at Detroit in 2 weeks time ,even if he ties in points with the leader he'll win because of his 3 wins over morias's 2 2nd place best finishes.

Press release:

Ben Townley wins Supercross Lites nail biter in Dallas.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki’s Ben Townley has pulled off his 3rd Supercross Lites win of the season, this time at a slightly muddy Texas stadium in Dallas.

Townley’s blinding start saw him grab the Progressive hole-shot award however a wide line before an on-off obstacle saw both Kawasaki team-mate Darcy Lange and Ryan Dungey slip by the Kiwi. The former MX2 world champ, immediately realized his mistake and changed his racing line, upping his pace and corner speed. Around the halfway mark, ‘BT’ intuitively went wide after the finish line to capitalized on a mistake by Dungey. He sailed past both Dungey and Lange in the same move and controlled the rest of the race to the checkered flag.

“Mission accomplished,” stated Townley. “ I had quite a bit of fun tonight and am really pumped with my hole-shot. It’s been a long time since I have felt this good on a bike. I feel like I have turned a bit of a corner in my riding - my whole package feels like it came together tonight.”

Townley has succeeded in closing down the deficit to 3 points over championship leader Ryan Morais. Riders and teams will enjoy a well deserved break in the calendar before the championship decider will take place in Detroit, Michigan on the 21 April.

Press Release:

BEN TOWNLEY WINS EASTERN REGIONAL AMA SUPERCROSS LITES CHAMPIONSHIP.

Detroit, April 21 2007:

Kawasaki's Ben Townley, of Tallahassee, Florida, won the Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Lites Championship with a second place finish. Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minnesota, won the main event, leading all 15 laps.

Dungey opened the Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Lites class main event with the $1,000 Progressive Direct Holeshot Award with Yamaha's Ryan Morais, of Temecula, California, in second and Honda's Billy Laninovich, of Lake Elsinore, California, in third. Townley rounded turn one in fourth place.

Morais, who came into the event as the points leader, stalled his bike on the opening lap, dropping to 12th place, whilst the pack ran away. On lap eight, Townley moved into second place, scoring second place and the first AMA Supercross Lites title of his career.

Dungey established a huge lead and rode to the third win of the year. He finishes the season in 5th place.

"I am still learning, so I hope to have better luck next year," said Dungey. "I won the holeshot, and I rode a great race after that. I look forward to racing in Las Vegas in two weeks."

"This is a dream come true," said Townley. "It's great to have a season under my belt and I have really enjoyed working with my team Pro Circuit Kawasaki."

Press release:

Ben Townley crowned Supercross Lites East coast champion.

New Zealand’s Supercross sensation, Ben Townley, has been crowned Supercross Lites East Coast champion at the 7th and deciding round of the Amp’d Mobile SX series in Detroit Michigan. The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider pulled back a huge points deficit over the duration of the series after a first round DNF had the 22-year-old almost counted out of the running.

With 3 points separating Townley from points leader, Ryan Morais and five from team-mate Darcy Lange, it would be a tough, three way battle for the title. Townley qualified fastest in timed practice however a hard heat race saw the Kiwi finish third to place him directly into the 15 lap final.

The Ford field stadium was on it’s feet as the gate dropped for the SX Lites final with Ryan Dungey grabbing the lead in front of Ryan Morais. Townley trailed in fourth after being pushed wide in the first turn when Ryan Morais stalled is machine on the second lap. With this stroke of luck, the title was virtually in Townley’s grasps as he strung together a bunch of consistent laps to pass Billy Laninovich for second. Townley kept his cool, certain not to make any detrimental mistakes and crossed the finish line with his first hard earned AMA Supercross Lites title in the bag.

“This a dream come true,” choked Townley with tear-filled eyes. “It’s unexplainable – so many emotions, so much hard work and so much blood, sweat and tears have gone into winning this championship – I can’t find words to describe it. The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki team have been awesome. I have to thank Mitch, my mechanic, Craig Behl and all the guys in the team who have helped make this happen. THOR, Parts Unlimited, Alpinestars, Scott, Amp’d Mobile and all our other sponsors have stood by me when things were tough and this payback for them all. I’ve dreamt about this moment since I was kid and to have it come true, with my family, friends and fans here with me, is just awesome.”

Townley will head to Las Vegas on the 5th of May for the coveted East vs West coast shoot-out after which the AMA Motocross season will kick off two weeks later at Hangtown in Sacramento, CA.

Read on Racer X:

When it happens, it happens fast. It’s been quite a week for Ben Townley: he’s on the cover of the new Dirt Rider, Motocross Illustrated and Cycle News, and there’s certainly more to come! Townley’s rise from the ashes of last season has been an inspiration for everyone but his competition, and now he’s looking like one of the main contenders to Ryan Villopoto’s reign in the Lites outdoors. When we checked in with him Monday, he was already out in California, finally testing his outdoor bike.

“I’m way behind on this, but it will be all right,” he said, no doubt referring to the amount of extra testing time Villopoto got because he clinched his title way, way earlier. Either way, with Townley healthy, Ryan Dungey riding extremely well, and Jason Lawrence maybe getting his act together (more on that below), the Lites could be the race to watch this summer.

Press release:

Townley’s Vegas Supercross shootout short-lived.

The Las Vegas East vs West Supercross Lites shootout has ended in an anti climax as one of the main protagonists and newly crowned East Coast champion, Ben Townley of the Monster Energy/ Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki team suffered a technical mishap in the main event.

Townley’s road to the main was flawless as he qualified fastest in the East coast group and then went on to win his qualifying race, setting the stage for a thrilling 15 lap final.

As the gate dropped for the much awaited duel, Townley’s number 1E Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki grabbed the Progressive hole-shot. Moments later the New Zealander came to a standstill with a derailed chain putting the kiwi out of contention much to the dismay of the sellout Vegas crowd.

“I really enjoyed riding in Las Vegas,” commented Townley. “The hype surrounding this race is unbelievable. I liked the track and the hard dirt and this has been my first heat win so I was really pumped for the final. I ripped the hole-shot and was looking forward to a battle with Dungey and Villopoto but I guess it didn’t happen. I have had a great Supercross season but it’s now time to focus on the outdoors. My fitness is great and I really can’t wait to pound out those 30 minute moto’s.”

Townley will head to Sacramento, CA in two weeks time for the opening round of the AMA Motocross National championship in Hangtown. As a former MX2 World champion, ‘BT’ is tipped as one of the favourites for the outdoor series.

"In AMA Motocross Lites Ryan Villopoto begins his title defense. Villopoto is looking to add his name to the esteemed list of winners at the event. Last year the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider finished fifth. Teammate Ben Townley, of New Zealand, may prove to be the biggest challenger to Villopoto’s crown. Townley has the background – he won the MX2 World Motocross Championship in 2004."

Lawrence and Villopoto got into fisticuffs on the track! Sounds like lawrence was messin' with Villo all day and Villo stopped him at the start/finish line on a turn going into some whoops and the fists started flyin'!
They were rammin heads during that lap quite alot, then during the turn lawrence ran into him, immediatly they were rolling and officials ran after them to break it up. Villamoto jumped on his bike and rode off while lawrence walked off to the pits.

I have pics but for some reason they won't upload to the site.

From the AMA website:
Maybe by now you’ve heard about the fireworks between Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence and Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopto. It actually began in the first Lite’s practice, which later saw a meeting between AMA Race Manager Steve Whitelock, Lawrence, Villopoto, and Ryan’s teammate Ben Townley. Later in practice session number two, Lawrence and Villopoto would continue their own “take out” race until they stopped just before the finish line and Villopoto “ghost rode” his bike into Lawrence. A fight broke out and both were later fined.

Word has it that Ben Townley is going to be on Honda's next year.

No results yet, but further to the above:

Per cycle news:

The following is from the AMA...

AMA Racing announced today that Jason Lawrence and Ryan Villopoto have been penalized at the Honda Hangtown Motocross Classic from Sacramento, Calif., the opening round of the 2007 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship presented by FMF.

According to AMA Racing SX/MX Director Steve Whitelock, for actions detrimental to the sport, Lawrence has been fined $7,500 and placed on probation for one year beginning May 18, 2007. Additionally, as part of the penalty, Lawrence loses his earned gate pick for both motos of Sunday’s Motocross Lites event and will now pick 40th out of the 40-rider field.

Villopoto has been fined $2,500.

The penalties stem from a series of instances that occurred during Saturday’s two practice sessions which culminated in a scuffle between the two riders late in session two.

According to Whitelock the severity of the penalties is relative to each riders’ actions. “Jason Lawrence and Ryan Villopoto both share in the blame for what happened today,” said Whitelock. “However, the penalty is harsher for Lawrence because he was the instigator and has demonstrated a pattern of questionable behavior.”

Whitelock confirmed that Lawrence had received a verbal warning regarding his actions after the first practice session.

The final decision on the penalties was reached Saturday evening after meeting with both riders and their teams, reviewing photos and considering the reports of AMA race officials.

Its just a rumour, unconfirmed and premature by the sound of it. AMA update and change pages that you read, here is the latest.

With all the silly season talk about Ivan Tedesco and Ben Townley moving to Team Honda for 2008, I cornered Honda Team Manager Eric Kehoe as he walked into the red semi this morning. According to Kehoe they have been talking to “several riders about next season”, adding that the reports of Tedesco and Townley being signed were premature. My own thoughts are that it’s true they’ve been talking with Tedesco and Townley, but I doubt anything is official. Stay tuned….

“It was a great day; I was a little gutted up after the first moto where I didn’t really ride my own race. We went back and looked at a few things, and made a few changes. Then went back to the line and my Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki ripped a great holeshot” exclaimed Ben Townley after taking his first AMA Motocross overall.

No Looking Back

Townley didn’t even know that it was teammate Villopto who was his main competition for the win, saying that “when I’m out on the track I wasn’t really racing Ryan; I was just racing myself. I wasn’t looking back at all; I was just looking forward. I didn’t really know it was him until about half way through the race when I took a bit of a peek to see who it was. He doesn’t have that number 1 plate on his bike for nothing – he’s going to be a strong competitor all year”.

Star Struck

“I’ve said it a lot already this year, and I may be starting to sound like a bit of a broken record but to me it’s amazing. As a kid growing up I never got to see Ricky Carmichael race; or guys like Emig and Lamson, by me going to Europe. To me, being here and winning on the same day that Ricky Carmichael does is amazing. It’s something that I will look back on in my career and feel amazing. New Zealand is so far away - to win a national today is hard to put into words” said Townley.

Small Country

Wrapping things up, Townley added that “New Zealand does not have a big population; but we do have a big dirt bike riding population. The tracks are awesome; I think that you would be surprised if you came down there”.

Contract Time

Townley’s Manager Glen Dempsey was at Hangtown and told me he would be spending a few days in California before flying to Japan for the World Motocross GP. Dempsey also manages World Motocross point’s leader Josh Coppins. Does Dempsey’s visit to California involve contract negotiations?

Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Ben Townley is having an excellent season, the kind of season that he should have had last year when injuries sidelined him. Now healthy, the New Zealander is making up for lost time. With a Supercross Lites Championship and his overall win at last weekend’s Hangtown Classic, BT101 is my pick to win the summer’s AMA Toyota Motocross Lites Championship Presented by FMF. Likely one of the most sought after riders, if not the most sought after rider for 2008, the 22 year old World Motocross Champion is in a great position; but first he wants to concentrate on his task at hand – winning another race.

Ben, congratulations on your first AMA Motocross win last weekend; replay what went on.

The first moto was not how I expected it to go at all. I got out of the gate pretty good, and then I went down – after that I just pretty much rode like a girl. I was tight and got caught up in riding with Dungey, Josh Grant, and Ryan; at one point we were all sort of together – I wasn’t going forward at all. So I went back to the truck between motos and worked in my head what I wanted to do; then came out in the second moto and did exactly that.

This could be an obviously dumb question based on your Hangtown win; but is it difficult to compete on a track that you have never ridden before?

No not really; I dealt with that all through the Europe days where I would go to new circuits all the time. I think that any rider that wants to be great has to adapt to any type of track.

With you living in Florida, do you have any preference over west coast or east coast tracks?

No, not at all; you’ve got to race them all - I try not to have any favorites. You’ve got to be good at all twelve rounds, and make it through every moto - and you must be consistent.

Probably the Lites Championship is your main goal; with that said will you simply try to win every moto, or take a more strategic approach?

Well, at the moment I am going out there to do my best and go for those moto wins. I didn’t really know what to expect last weekend, I was just going in there to sort of feel my way through it a little bit. Now I think I know where I am at, and what I need to work on. There’s going to be a lot of guys up there week in and week out; but just not every weekend. So you just have to go for those moto wins and get as many points as possible.

Ben, you are a pretty modest guy, but many would say that you crushed Villopoto last weekend in that second moto.

You know, Ryan does not have that number 1 plate for nothing! He proved that and won the Championship last year. That’s my main goal and objective this year; to go for that Championship. I feel that like where I am at this year, I should have been at last year – fighting for the championship with Ryan. But getting back to what you said, it’s probably a little early for people to be saying that; this is only the second round.

I have to ask this last question or I wouldn’t be doing my job. There’s been a lot of speculation about where you will be next year – what can you say?

Well, I would like to move to the 450 bike; definitely within the next year. I’ve now got to weigh out all the opportunities and make a good decision. As of yet, I can say that I definitely have not signed anything; I’ve got a lot to concentrate on this summer. Hopefully good things will happen; I just have to keep putting the work in.

Ben Townley was part of a moto-long battle of four in the first moto at Hangtown, but he came out in moto two and kicked it up a gear, putting the Lites class on notice that being strong in the end is going to be required all summer. Townley should know: he shares a trainer with the one guy you can count on for never running out of steam, RC himself.
Townley, a former MX2 World Champion and, more recently, the East Coast Lites regional SX champion, traded moto wins with his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit teammate Ryan Villopoto and is tied in points, but he left the first round a lot more confident and with a strong moto runaway under his belt already. Townley is adjusting quickly, and his fitness is going to be an asset as well. The Lites class is shaping up to be a great battle.

Mission accomplished for BT101

photo: Steve Bruhn
Racer X: Going into the weekend, what chances did you give yourself for taking the overall at round one?
Ben Townley: Well, outdoors should obviously be my strong point right now. I wasn’t aiming for just coming out and winning. Specifically, I wanted to have good day and end up on the podium and find out exactly where I am really. That was my main goal for the day. That turned into two solid rides. I did win the overall, but I didn’t think the first race was a solid ride in my eyes. But you take the good with the bad.

In your mind, how many of your competitors are potential winners in Lites right now?
Obviously, both Ryans are on it [Villopoto and Dungey]. They’re both young and hungry and hard workers. I have spent time with both of them. The sport at his day and age requires 100 percent commitment to the sport. It’s not like you can get away with being a softie these days. You have to put in the effort if you want the reward. I think those two are my main competitors as far as the outdoor championship goes. The Lites class is always exciting. Look at Josh Grant. He rode excellent in that first moto. I didn’t expect him to do that. He rode well. I’m sure there will be performances like that all summer long.

You said in the press conference that you didn’t feel like you were yourself in moto one but got it sorted out for the second. Is that something that happens again, or was that just a bad start to the season and forget about it?
Sometimes it’s just how things work out. I had dirt in my goggles, and I made that mistake on that off camber and rode it like a girl for the rest of the race. I was a completely different person for the second race, but that’s what you have to do if you want to be a champion. You have to learn quickly and adapt for the second moto. I was really pumped in that off-camber in the second moto, and I rode how I wanted to ride. That’s what you have to do. Racing against Ryan with the #1 plate on his bike, he obviously knows how to do it. You have to be strong in all areas.

Is it any different having the defending champion as a teammate?
I don’t look at it like that. I just go out there and race my race, and whoever I battle with, so be it. I don’t look at Ryan as being any better just because he has the #1 plate. He’s a great competitor and I enjoy racing him. It’s been fun.

Compared to GPs, the race experience or anything, are there things here you didn’t expect or you find strange?
I don’t know if I should say this, but the AMA, the way they handle some things sometimes…. That can be surprising compared to GPs. As far as the day goes, you adapt to whatever, and at the end of the day it’s two motos. You have your practices, it’s like anywhere in the world. The tracks are different for sure. Other than that, they’re just like being in a muddy field in New Zealand.

Who travels with you?
My girlfriend, Lucy, we live together. Rubin, who is from Belgium, he helps me out with my riding and stuff. Glen Dempsey [manager] goes to a lot of the races. Aldon, I just live around the corner from him. He helps me get fit for days like this.

Ben would love to add another plate to those doors this summer
If you won the MX2 championship without Aldon, and now you’re here working with him, in what ways has that picked up your game?
I always trained hard, both in Europe and here. There are little things, but I don’t want to elaborate on that too much. It does work good for me. There are things Aldon does for me that are different than with Ricky. At the end of the day, it’s what you put into it. Being able to pick up the things I have from him has been really great.

I’ll put you on the spot with a bench-racing question: If you dropped Cairoli in this race today, where would he be?
I think he would be right up there, without a doubt. He’s flying right now. I raced against him in 2004. He would get every holeshot. I was a terrible starter then. I had to pass him every time. He has come a long way since then. He is a very accomplished rider now. I would have no doubt that he would be right up there.

The AMA online / live results thing is crap compared to MX1! 7am = 3pm there and the first lites race was at 1pm. The live results thing is blank like last week, and the results page hasn't been udpated either.

Date: 27 May 2007.
Press release:

Townley resilient at High Point national.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki racer and former MX2 world champ, Ben Townley, has bounced back from a technical hitch in moto one to stamp his authority on the final moto at the AMA Toyota Motocross at High Point raceway in Mt Morris, PA.

After setting the fastest lap times in Saturday’s MX Lites timed sessions, Townley would be the man to beat for the 2 x 30 minutes moto’s on Sunday. The New Zealander’s chances of extending his Motocross Lites championship points lead disintegrated in the first meters of moto 1 when he collided with another rider down the start straight, destroying his front wheel in the crash. Townley miraculously remounted and completed a full lap with most of his spokes missing before heading into the pit lane where the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki mechanics changed the front wheel, enabling Townley to rejoin the race almost a lap down. ‘BT’ took the bit between his teeth and charged through the pack moving up the standings with every lap. By the checkered flag he had clawed his way into 10th position to salvage valuable championship points.

With rougher track conditions favouring the Kiwi in moto 2, Townley made short work of Ryan Dungey and then Joshua Grant to take over the lead on the second lap. Shadowed by fellow teammate Ryan Villopoto in the opening stages, Townley put his head down and pulled a sizeable gap over Villopoto and was unchallenged to the finish line.

“I have to thank the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki mechanics for a great job in the first moto - they got me back onto the track with a new front wheel and I was able to dig deep and save as many points as possible. I really enjoyed the track this weekend and loved every minute of it. Winning the second moto secured 3rd overall and a step on the podium for me but I’m not happy about losing points in the championship. I’m looking forward to the next round in Southwick and riding sand again – my GP experience and having lived in Belgium is going to be an advantage,” commented Townley.

Townley will have a weeks break in the calendar before heading to the infamous sand circuit of Southwick in Massachusetts on the 9-10 June.

he is 10th qualifier, most quick times were very early in first sesson when it was flat, some talk in the states about this

in the second practice he was 3th, but his lap times are very conisistant, look for a good race
top time 2nd time in lap
1. 338 Jason D Lawrence Yamaha YZ250F 2:00.209 2 2:01.996 9
2. 24 Joshua M Grant Honda CRF250R 2:00.224 3 2:01.228 9

4. 1 Ryan D Villopoto Kawasaki KX250F 2:00.521 9 2:00.641 4
5. 62 Ryan M Dungey Suzuki RM-Z250 2:01.360 7 2:02.565 6
6. 30 Andrew Mcfarlane Suzuki RM-Z250 2:01.474 7 2:03.788 4
7. 52 Thomas K Hahn Honda CRF250R 2:01.637 7 2:01.645 9
8. 73 Jake T Weimer Honda CRF250R 2:02.193 3 2:03.008 5

10. 75 Broc Oneal Tickle Yamaha YZ250F 2:02.580 9 2:03.288 2

notice BT's second lap time is nearly as quick as his first, were the top 2 are a second off in their 2nd lap,

should be a good race tomorrow, BT has shown to be the fittest in the class, and this is the roughist track of the year, should be right up his ally

This is from someone that was at the race:

As far as the Lites go: Townley flat out rips fellas... He rides the sand real well and picks wicked lines. Villy had a great start in moto 1 and that is the only reason BT 101 didn't win the first heat. Villy brought it, don't get me wrong, but in my opinion Townley is faster than Villapoto right now - hands down. They are on the same bikes, but BT has speed on Villapoto. Period.

Press release:

Townley wins in Southwick sand.

Ben Townley of the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki team has won his second Motocross Lites event of the season at the third round of the AMA Toyota Motocross champs in Southwick, Massachusetts.

The New Zealander was picked as race favorite coming into the event due to his vast sand riding experience gained while campaigning the MX GP series in Europe. Being a former MX2 world champion and Dutch Motocross champion he was the man to beat at the infamous MX338 sand track.

With organizers flattening the circuit on Saturday night prior to the race and between moto’s on race day, the normally rough and demanding Southwick circuit was made easier on the riders which did not play into Townley’s favour.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki team-mate, Ryan Villopoto, grabbed the hole-shot in moto 1 while ‘BT’ had to work his way to second and give chase to his young rival. Villopoto took the win with Townley a few seconds adrift with both Team-mates posting impressive race lap times, almost two seconds faster than the next group of riders.

After grabbing a good start in moto 2, ‘BT’ succeeded in getting around Ryan Dungey to take the lead in the opening stages of the 30 minute moto. A fast charging Villopoto managed to reel Townley in and take over the lead but threw it away later in the race to hand Townley the overall laurels.

“It was a good day for me but I didn’t gain any points in the championship and that was one of my goals coming into the race. Ryan (Villopoto) rode really well and impressed me with how fast he was in the sand today. I was happy to let him go in the second moto because he was running a really fast past and I knew that it would be hard to keep that up for the entire race and as it happened he made a mistake which I was able to capitalize on. I was confident that the pace I was running I could keep going for the whole moto but in the end I got let off the hook and was happy to bring home the victory.” explained Townley after winning his second ever AMA Motocross Lites overall.

The next round of the championship moves to Budds Creek, Maryland (16-17 June), a track where Townley rode his first ever AMA 125cc outdoor event as a guest rider back in 2002.

There are definitely a lot of great Motocross Lites riders racing now, but of them all I could easily see Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Ben Townley taking over the role left by the retiring Ricky Carmichael. With a World Motocross Championship and now AMA Supercross Lites Championship, Townley is on a roll with two AMA Motocross Lites wins this season. Second in championship points to teammate Ryan Villopoto, BT is the talk of the annual Motocross “Silly Season”. Where will he go for 2008? I ask the question, but Ben plays it safe.

Ben, talk about your season so far.

It’s been good actually Jim; it probably started off even better than I thought I’ve won two nationals so far, and I’m right there in terms of speed. I didn’t really know where I would be at having not raced the nationals over here yet. But it’s good start; its three rounds down so far and I’m ready to keep going.

Based on your success at these first three rounds; what would you say that your strength is?

Physically I’m in good shape; that really helps me out at the end of the motos – mentally as well. Also I really have a great team behind me with Pro Circuit - so those are the three things that stand out right away.

Has there been anything from these first races where you went back home and thought “I need to work on this”?

No, I’m just doing what I’ve always done – and not changing anything. During the week I just try to focus a little on a few things, and not try to reinvent the wheel. I believe you should do what you always do – and do what works.

You haven’t raced at many of these tracks; are they what you expected?

Well they are, and they aren’t. Hangtown was a lot better than what I expected, High Point was about what I thought that it would be, and Southwick was different than what I thought it would be - so it’s been a bit of both. At the end of the day, we all ride the same track; and by the end of the weekend I kind of have them figured out.

With you and Ryan (Villopoto) battling it out front, has this created any tension in the Pro Circuit semi?

No, as of now it’s hasn’t, and I don’t expect that it will change at all. We both know that we are going to be in it until the end of the season. He’s a great competitor, and I like racing with him. He’s a young kid and he has his head screwed on right. If we don’t try any stupid moves, it’s going to be fineJ

One final question that I have to ask you: have you signed for 2008 yet?

Well Jim, since the last time that I spoke with you (High Point) I have not gone any further with things. It’s like I said before, I want to do it right; there’s a lot of changes in the motorcycle racing world right now with Ricky retiring, and people looking at doing supercross only deals; so there is a lot going on. There’s not a lot more to say; I’ll probably have something done soon, but as of right now my priority is racing – and going for this championship!

Ben Townley can add his name to the list of Southwick first-timers that left saying it wasn’t what he expected, but not many people can say they won it the first time! Townley went 2-1 for the overall, trading moto wins with his teammate Ryan Villopoto.
Townley capitalized on a mistake Villopoto made in moto 2 that handed him the lead, and he won the second moto without a challenge after his pass.
He’s won every second moto so far, which means his fitness is excellent and he’s a candidate to be there until this series comes down to the wire. Here’s what he had to say about his first time at Southwick.

Racer X: Ben, what are you doing on these second motos? Are you like the ironman or something?
Ben Townley: No, just working with Aldon is paying dividends now. I am very fortunate to be able to work with him. About midway through 2005, I think, when I made my deal with Pro Circuit, I talked to Mitch about living on the East coast and he was cool with that. I thought I would give Aldon a call and see if there was an opportunity. It’s all history now. It’s really paying off. I am super-pumped on the way I am physically. I have a great team. It’s all working good. I just have one short redhead that seems to be able to all the same things! It seems we are both going at the same level.

Townley is eight points behind Villopoto in the championship
As far races today, how did the first moto go?
In the first lap, he [Ryan Villopoto] just got away. I was third behind Davalos. I got Davalos and he got me right back. It took me until the finish line to get him so for a whole lap I was in third. He pulled a gap and then we just stayed the same. I expected to just catch him and it didn’t happen. Midway through the race, I really dug deep and tried to catch him and hoped he made a mistake, but you have to give it up for him, he rode bloody well.

What did you expect out of this race? Was it the track you thought it would be?
It is like a supercross track in that it looks huge on TV. The turns look wide and everything looks fun and mellow. You get out there and everything is squashed together. It’s just really confined.
With this track, I expected it to be sandy and whooped out and it was, but in those whooped out sections there was a hard base to it. Everytime you go into it you don’t you know if you are going to actually stay there. The sand I have ridden before, you knew what you had. This was a tricky track.
Everyone makes a big deal about me not riding many of these tracks and I don’t think there are any issues there, but this one was definitely the hardest one so far.

Did you struggle with the track in practice?
No, that was more with bike setup. We hadn’t ridden anything like this as far as sand. As amateur kids come up, they are so good at riding tracks that are flat out, they can get out there and go balls to the wall. It’s tough for me to go out and ride like that in those first practices. Once it gets some lines and it gets rough it's more like a realistic moto situation, I can find my speed.

Doesn’t the team have all this experience and information about Southwick and do you find yourself inundated with advice?
No, that’s what good about working with Mitch. He knows I have good experience, and I do still rely on him and we work together. They don’t tell me what to do and I don’t tell them what to do either. That’s why the relationship is so good. I have a lot of respect for Bones and he has a lot of respect for me. It seems to be working well. I don’t want to change anything. It is a great team to be on.

With yourself and Ryan so close, do they sit you two down and say “Okay, race but don’t bump into each other or stuff like that?”
No, the only thing that Mitch ever said was race hard but race clean. That is my philosophy as well with Ryan. We are both out there trying to win a championship and we both respect each other. When he went down (moto 2) I could have just run over his legs but I didn’t want to do that hurt someone in the process. I am sure if it were the other way around, he would have done the same thing. He is clean and isn’t going to put anyone over the banners at all.

Are you taking notes for the Motocross of Nations when you race Budds next weekend?
[Laughs] The Motocross of Nations is a great race. I’m sure you guys think the same. The atmosphere is not like any other place. I am looking forward to it. As far as next week, it is just another race and I have to prepare and make sure I am ready to go.

After three rounds, are you where you expected to be?
Yes. I had bigger expectations for this track. In the others, I was further ahead than what I thought. The supercross season took so long to finish. I still raced Vegas so I didn’t really get much outdoor time. I set a goal of making sure I was up there for those first three rounds and to come away winning two of them is great. Obviously the only asterisk to the whole thing was that first moto at Mt. Morris.

t’s hard to say who’s the fastest man on the planet now on a 250F. If it’s the first moto of an AMA Motocross National, it’s Ryan Villopoto. If it’s the second moto, it’s Ben Townley. If it’s in Europe right now, it’s Tony Cairoli. But then again, all three of these guys hustle in both motos, but the breaks have worked out—in either motos or contracts—that we won’t know until September 23 and the 2007 Motocross des Nations at Budds Creek.

Townley has won every second moto thus far in 2007

photo: Steve Bruhn
I have not seen Cairoli race this year, but a couple of co-workers who have say he is stunning. But I have seen Villopoto and Townley, and they are both extraordinarily fast and in shape. Villopoto, the defending AMA Toyota Motocross Lites Champion, gets going in a hurry every time out. If not for a spill in the second moto yesterday while leading, it would have been tough for Townley to catch him. Even though he has yet to win a race, he’s still the points leader after three rounds, and as we saw at Budds Creek last year, he flat-out flies there.

Townley has been more patient, maybe because he’s three years older than his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit teammate and still finding his way in America. His second-moto prowess is obvious: He’s 3-for-3 in 2007, and that’s why he’s got two overall wins to none for RV1. However, he knows he can’t let Villopoto get on a roll, because if he does—as he did last year—he’s tough to stop.

As for Cairoli, Racer X’s European contributors are split: Geoff Meyer says the Italian is the best on the planet right now; Matt Allard told us at High Point that it’s Townley. Too bad that Tony isn’t coming to Budds Creek this coming weekend as many hoped in order to check out the MXdN track, because America’s best vs. New Zealand’s best vs. Italy’s best would be something to behold! It would also answer the question as to who is the fastest right now.

Press release:

Townley second in Budds Creek.

A sell-out crowd in Budds Creek, Maryland has seen New Zealand’s Ben Townley, post two consistent second place finishes at the fourth round of the AMA Toyota Motocross series.

Townley qualified second to fellow Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki team-mate in the Sunday morning timed sessions and rolled onto the newly positioned Budds Creek starting gate ready for moto 1. With Villopoto getting a better start out front, Townley took a few laps to get past Josh Grant before going after Villopoto. Both Kawasaki riders left the rest of pack in the distance however Townley could not reel in Villopoto and had to be content with second place.

The Motocross Lites riders would have to deal with a slicker Budds Creek circuit in moto 2 as organizers flattened some sections, adding water to keep the dust down in the sweltering Maryland heat. Townley got ousted from the hole-shot by Villopoto, setting up the two Monster Energy/ Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki’s for a potential ding dong battle. Villopoto quickly came to terms with the slippery track while Townley lost traction and time to his younger counterpart. A carbon copy of moto 1 would see Villopoto taking honors over Townley.

“Ryan rode great today and I can’t take anything away from him. He had two good starts and rode away from us. Full credit to him - I’ve got some work to do for sure. The track was quite slick under the dirt and I was having trouble getting traction in a few places and couldn’t seem to make it work. This has been a good opportunity to race this track before MX of Nations in September.” commented a somewhat disappointed Townley.

Townley heads to REDBUD, Buchanan Michigan for round 5 of 12 next weekend.
