View Full Version : Biker Down (Mar 13th) - Harbour Bridge South Bound

Biker down this morning on the Habour Bridge southbound. Approx 9.30am-ish.

The bike looked like an older model Honda either a CBR 250/400 or VFR400. Mainly white with a dark tinted screen.

Male rider. Rider seemed ok, was up and walking around talking to the tow truck driver and the police... another cop on a bike was talking to a young guy in a boy racer looking car, not sure who was in the wrong.

Hope your ok buddy

I had a mental image of a biker falling off the bridge after being shunted off their bike.

Glad they are ok :)

Heading up or down the bridge? Heading down the bridge, in the wet, in traffic can be sketchy if you need to brake near one of the big metal joins.... Good fun headin up the bridge in the wet though.... wrrrrrrrrzzzzzzzzzzzz

Heading up the bridge. On the left hand side in lane 2, the bike and car and cops etc where in the medium lane between lane 2 and 3 (Lane two is on the outside of the bridge and lane 3 on the inside if that makes sense). Not sure if thats where the accident happened but thats where they were all parked up.

It hurts.

Bike is buggered.

Ive been better.

Insurance may be a nasty point, being on a 4 hundy and all...

Definitely get checked out (if you haven't already). Often it's not until the adrenaline wears off that you realise how sore you are and if you need any physio etc later, need to make sure all the ACC requirements are fulfilled.

Glad to hear you're (relatively) ok. That fingernail's going to look spectacular for a while.

I had that theory last week after some fat fucker from TAXIS UNITED ran up the back of my car on market road. Two days later I was in hostpital in agony and vomiting. Good old delayed concussion... Go to A & E dude, they will get you sorted with some physio... Mmmm

Nah she'l be alrite. Just concussion.

Just to state the obvious (though no one gives a shit in NZ because it's a common rugby injury therefore you are soft to complain about it) concussion is just about the worst injury you can get. There are all sorts of repercussions to not getting checked out, and what feels mild today may be death tomorrow.

You somersaulted 7 times. Your brain may be dropping into your spinal column. It's called "coning". It's almost always fatal if not dealt with immediately.

Do not fight with Kittyhawk when she turns, up go to the hospital.

Hard Luck Bro at least you landed on an expensive cushion (porsche).
Take Jim2's advice I had a serious off and could'nt remember my name etc.
I had some fluid running out of my ears and the ambo's said I would have a headache for a while I got taken home by the fuzz as I could'nt remember who I was the cops had to do a trace on my plates!!
I remember standing in the kitchen talking to my flat mate who was having a good laugh at my expense and woke up two days later in wellywood hospital!
The doctor told me the fluid that was running out of my ears was Spinal fluid!!
When I hit the road at high speed Head first I compressed my spine and it was like punching the base of my brain causing it to swell!!!
I've been fucked up eversince!!!!!!
Head injuries are deadly serious don't try to be a hard man!!!
Enjoy the time off work and give the nurses a hard time (they love it!).

Good grief! How did the ambos ever let you go home in that state?! That sounds like a classic case of "get him to hospital NOW!"

If you've had a bump on the head, always get it checked out. It's often the swelling that does the damage, and you need to be kept under constant watch until everything's stable.

I hope Morcs isn't reading this, because he should be off having a checkup! :nono:

Yep, just to add more weight to the concussion thing, always get medical advice. A mate of mine had a bit of a tussle a while back, then went to bed after telling everybody "she'll be right" and refusing to go and get checked out. He never woke up.

Some things that should be common knowledge but that are often neglected even by medical proffesionals.

Alcohol can cause swelling and ireperable damage for about three months after all other symptoms are long gone.

CRT screens or LCDs set to low refresh rates can trigger epileptic seizures in otherwise not prone people while head aches persist.

Balance can be unreliable, especially during a head ache or bright lights.
Check with a professional AND your insurance company before resuming riding if you do not want to end up with a medical advice not to ride after another accident,

If you experience light sensitivity beyond about a week see another doctor.

Narcotics can make your symptoms permanant.

Drink plenty of water, you may not be able to tell when you are being dehydrated and dehydration can cause brain swelling.

Limit your intake of water to less than 600ml of water as your body may not know when it can no longer process the water (you guessed it ) leading to brain swelling.

Limit caffeine.

Do not take any pharmaceuticals without checking with a pharmacist.

*****I am not a medical professional if one disagrees with any of the above listen to them not me. These are just the things I can remember from my last concussion.*****

On second thought Morcs should not read this, can someone pass this on to him?

Mate, hope you are under medical supervision, or discharged from same with some mates to keep a watch.........like others have said here, dont underestimate a head knock, shit, in the olden days when I nursed you used to be 24/7 watched in hospital after a head knock, take care eh, hope the really ouchy bits heal fast and the noggin has not taken too much of a beating.

Thanks for that info, Speedie. My original comments were in response to Guitana (who had fluid coming out of his ears and couldn't remember his name! :shit: )

But yeah it seems really common for bikers to be more worried about their bike than their brains! My sister came off her bike a few years ago and got concussion. The ambos tried to take her to hospital but she refused to leave her bike. I was so mad when she told me that! But now I have a bike of my own I kind of understand...

Maybe in a case like this it's a good idea for a passing biker to stop and offer to make sure the bike gets to somewhere safe, so the injured person can go off and get checked up with one less thing to worry about. Of course you'd have to be as good as your word and actually look after the bike. Supervise the towie as if it was your bike he's loading!

Heya guys, just a quick update....Morcs seems to be in cheerful spirit and was asking when he can go for a blat next lol......his left thumb is all bandaged up due to loosing his nail and he has a little road rash...nothing too serious there.

As for the headaches, he just needs to rest up and take it easy for a couple of days. (I'll try my best to make sure he does just that!!)

Saw the bike today, it dosen't start, bit of cosmetic damage here and there but it happens. Fingers crossed it will fire up again after the mechanics look at it.

He's all smiles still and its nice to see him in good spirits after a bugger of a day.

LCD's don't flicker. You cant adjust their refresh rate... Windows might let you try and do it but it wont make any difference. LCDs refresh a pixel as it needs to change color. The response time of a LCD is measured in milliseconds and that measures the time it takes for 1 pixel to change from white to completely black or vice versa.CRT's refresh the whole screen, the reason you get sore eyes is because your eyes refresh at about 70hz. So with a screen at 60hz your eyes notice the flicker and give you a headache.

I hate to contradict you but all LCD screens flicker - it is a fundamental consequence of their technology. However it isn't due to the refresh rate.

There's a really good explanation of this at http://www.techmind.org/lcd/

In liquid crystal pixel cells, it is only the magnitude of the applied voltage which determines the light transmission (the transmission vs. voltage function is symmetrical about 0V). To prevent polarisation (and rapid permanent damage) of the liquid crystal material, the polarity of the cell voltage is reversed on alternate video frames. Unfortunately it is very difficult to get exactly the same voltage on the cell in both polarities, so the pixel-cell brightness will tend to flicker to some extent at half the frame-rate. If the polarity of the whole screen were inverted at once then the flicker would be highly objectionable. Instead, it is usual to have the polarity of nearby pixels in anti-phase, thus cancelling out the flicker over areas of any significant size. In this way the flicker can be made imperceptible for most "natural" images.

Nice to see you Morcs - now get the fuck off the computer, don't read anything and get time off work. Post-concussion syndrome can make you bed ridden for 3 months, and that is from my personal experience of going back to work too soon after a concussion.

ACC will cover you so you'll get 80% of your wages and your employer doesn't have to stump anything up for you being off work.

Get the fuck off the computer, don't read, and don't watch telly. Just chill and think about how cool it will be to go for a ride when you're better, or fantasise about scoring with some twins, or something. Just don't engage eyes and brain too much.

As DD says, it just doesn't matter, it is only a job. If you leave, no one remembers you the day after you've gone, because the work still needs to be done and you're not there doing it. No one is indispensable.

Your long term health is vastly more important and "work" is at the bottom of the list of things that you can justifiably risk your health for.

Hans
17th March 2007, 11:13
IMHO it's you and good mates, like Kitty, who should take priority over work and the boss. Not just in your case - in general. Ask yourself if your boss has any right to your health. I don't fucking think so. Hence do YOURSELF a favour and stay at home dude.

So, what would have happened had you been more seriously injured and been admitted to the Hospital ?

Has a doctor signed you off as fit to return to work? If not you should not be there. Moreover, you are doing your employer no favours by doing so, since you expose them to quite serious charges under Health and safety andACC legislation.

Morcs

Im more concerned with the insurance side of things - something that cannot wait.

Heres the state of play:

Dutch backpacker lady (has 3rd party insurance) runs me off the road. She is denying responsibility and not putting in a claim. She claims she is going back to holland on monday.

Backpackers motor insurance refused to chase up there client, suggesting i do it.

Police and witness prove im not at fault.

I had a long conversation with Dave at Kiwibike (what a legend) and he suggested i do a VIR check on the vehicle, i checked it and the dutch woman sold her car today (was hoping she was lending it, then i could claim off the owner).

I cant get hold of the dutch woman, the police, or the insurance company.

Im buggered and im sure it wont be long before i go on the rampage with a 308 to resolve the situation diplomatically...

Hans
17th March 2007, 12:40
Try talking to the cops, whether they are considering charges. PM Scumdog, or someone. Ask the cops, whether they are willing to just let her go as she is obviously not fronting up. Might be complte bollocks, but that's what I'd try.

Morcs

Do you have the address of the Dutch woman?

If you do... go to her address and demand some answers.

Talk to cops, they should be able to advise you on what to do re insurance/dutch woman.

You need to do this before monday, which makes things tricky but not impossible...

ring EVERYONE involved and make sure that they all know exactly what the situation is. - to cover your arse.

The only address i and the police have for the dutch woman (who was quite hot if i remember correctly) is her address in Holland. I mean, what farking use is that?

:Stressing: :shit:

How much money are we talking about here? damages etc?

Did you not get her details when you were waithing on the ground?

Someone that was involved must know her details... she would not have been allowed to leave the scene without making a statement - ring cops till they answer!

Yes i have heaps of details, a whole a4 page of absolutely everything from the scene. but no NZ address for the dutch tourist...

Talking about $2k in repairs if i were to do it, if a shop were to price the repairs up then i have no doubt that the insurance company would write it off.

Dave at Kiwibike is trying to source another written off vfr for me to rape for parts... :)

It hurts.

Bike is buggered.

Ive been better.

Insurance may be a nasty point, being on a 4 hundy and all...

car just changed lanes right into my path, pushed me off the road and onto my left side. I counted that I did 7 somersaults...

Unless your situation has changed (you imply you know you are riding outside of your licence conditions) there would be little point in getting insurance as I would expect they won't pay out.

Aha, yes true. But i also plan on getting an excemption soon aswell. apparently it is very easy for those over 6ft tall.

That would make all the difference.

No need to GIVE them reasons to decline your claim :msn-wink:

though it is irrelevant - Section 11 of the insurance law reform act says its all good :D

I am well aware of this, i tried getting retrospective insurance, but that didnt work either. Dave at Kiwibike advised to get an excemption asap. He seems to know what he is talking about with these issues.

Keep trying to get hold of the cops. I believe that in this situation any cops you can get hold of could be useful e.g. local cop shop. The issue to raise with them is not the accident itself but the fact that the woman's trying to do a runner w/out getting involved in what she fucked up. That might get them interested.

Staking out the airport and stab her is sounding better and better all the time.

If you get no joy by Sunday night: Ring customs describe her, tell them that you overheard her talking in a cafe, about carrying a few grams of coke in a condom up her ass. Hopefully if nothing else, they'll go looking for her (and the coke)

can you not see the new owner of the car and ask where she bought it from, or check the ownership details, I thought it took at least a week before the new owners address came up in the system and you could still get the old address. also her insurers must know her address or something. If she is leaving country on monday go to her home (if you can get her address) and make sure she can't leave. She will have to call the cops to make you leave her alone then tell the cops whats up.

Notify the police that she is trying to flee the country before charges can be laid. then call the airport and speak to the customs guys there, maybe they can help maybe not, but it is worth a call.

If you have the number plate of the car, then go to the post shop and get the owner details that way...Im not sure if they still release them but that too is also worth a try.

As for working....if it means I have to tie you down to a bed, and sit there reading you stories till you fall asleep I'll do it!!

Dont worry about work....get your health back up and running then get back into it....at this stage RELAX!

If she gets out of the country and nothing is done you will be left high and dry holding the bill, and she will probably, literally, be laughing all the way home.
If she was at fault I'd be camping at the police station until I got satisfaction.

I got sent a piece of paper with details of my accident on it.
The other person's insurance company paid $55 for the police report.
I rung the police to be told I too would have to pay to get a copy of it.
Guess what, that same piece of paper that was sent to me from the Hendrson police was the same paper, the other insurance company received.
How do I know this, cos they faxed that copy to my insurance company.
And no my insurance company did NOT put any money towards it either, as they did it off their own back...

So I ended up getting my copy for FREE.

Mate, I know it's basically none of my business, so you can tell me to fuck off anytime you want. But:

There is no way you should have to pay the police twice. You are already paying them from your taxes. This is a matter supposedly under investigation, with charges possibly pending. /whether the bitch is in the country is irrelevant/
If you want I will write a fairly solid letter for you to use. I have dealt with bureaucrats for a living. If this bitch was insured, then you will be able to get it out of her insurance company. If you leave it as it is, not only will you get Assfked, but you will be setting another precedent telling these cunts, that they can treat anyone like this. And this is one of the reasons it's getting so fucked up over here. Because people will not stand up. PM me if you want to write something to put these "gentlemen" back in line a bit.
