Before you book your tickets, figure out if you want, general admission, means you can wander around the whole track, grandstand tickets, means you get a seat,or go for a hospitalilty ticket, food & drink
We have always gone for a grandstand ticket,at Lukey Heights, the highest part of the track, you can see all but Honda corner

We went two years ago. A friend bought our tickets on line. I doubt that they would ever sell out as there is heaps of room there but I wouldn't want to risk it.

go to www.bikes.grandprix.com.au. On the front page there is the option for General Admission or Grandstand tickets. You will be able to go from there, or if you want details of the different packages, buy Australian Motorcycle News this Friday and that will generally have adverts for them.

the website above is the best place. we went last year and got general admin tickets and spent the first day wandering around finding a good spot...Siberia was it!!!! Get there early on race day though as it was packed by 8.30am.

The 4 of us rented a 6 berth campervan from Britz and drove down and stayed at the motorcamp adjacent to the track...rated it....although I do know lots of people who swear by staying in Cowes (just down the road).

Go, enjoy it is something you will never forget!!!!!!!!!!!

We are going this year. Have a house booked.

Should be a bloody good week. So I take it you can wonder around the track and get good viewing spots? That is the thing about Taupo that bugs me. You can't really get out on the track with out someone on the radio nagging you for being in the wrong place.

Bring it on in OZ

Went 2 years ago.... simply fantastic!! tickets won't be available till about 2-3 months before the event, it's quite easy to find them online... if all else fails google it and you'll get there. General admission allows you to walk round the whole track, the grandstands will set you back more and they're mainly wooden slat type seating so take a cushion! I agree with Hailwood, the grass mound at Siberia was the best spot. You can't see all of the main straight and loose sight of them when hey go through the hayshed section, but with an enormous tv screen in front of you, you don't miss a thing. We got there about 8am and it was getting chocka then so you really have to get there early. I thought the pit walk pass was a bit of a rip off, from what we saw, you get one chance a day when the officials say you can, and most of the teams chose that particular time to close the garage doors.

Tickets are available now and have been for a while.

The grandstand seats are the usual individual plastic seats, not wooden slats.

Thanks for the info. The plane tickets are on the desk so I suppose it is going to happen.
What sort of weather would you expect? I know it is a hard question but what was it like when you went.
Any other tips for a first timer to the GP?

Mrs Gixxer 4 ever and I are going so this is for us both

$1604.00 Napier to Napier including taxes and travel insurance.

Plus a rental car for 4-5 days.

We have rented a house on the island we are sharing with others and the entry fee.
All in all a few $$ but a week to remember..or not if the beer flows faster than the BBQ cooks :innocent:

I'm planning on going too. In the throws of organising getting specific "objects" (mainly one with 2 wheels and a motor) over there.

If anyone has any useful info on accomodation then I'd muchly appreciate it. Trying to do this on a budget. Although sleeping in a tent or rental vehicle is on the cards depending on how the $$$ are.

I can help out with anything you want .......

Being based in Melbourne has its advantages ........

Tickets are typically cheaper when purchased over here as a local ......

Send me a PM if ya want help.

Oh .... and there is no chance of staying at my place ..... was booked long ago.

Cheers

The weather can be bloody cold at the island .. it is right on Bass Straight ..... on the other hand it could be a scorching day, or both in the same day. The weather is weird over here.

Prepare for both.

Stay close to the Island or down the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston area (lots of Kiwis there) Mornington Peninsula is home to over 1,000,000 people.

PI is a good hour plus from the CBD, all freeway and crawling with 5-0 on motorsport weekends.

Cheers

Hi Titanium. Thanks for the feed back. I noted when I looked at the pic's to see what stand we wanted to be in people were wearing jackets. All good and we will bring stuff for all weather. We are in a house 2k from the track so it is good and close. A nice walk to freshen the mind after a late night. Again thanks for taking the time to reply. Steve

If you enjoy MotoGP on TV then don't go to the Island.

You won't believe how fast those bikes go.

Afterwards TV will never be the same again.

Siberia is my pick

2005 was pretty hot all weekend, sunblock material.... people we spoke to that had been in 2004 said it was freezing - as pointed out earlier in the thread, it is right on Bass Straight so a very chilly wind can blow straight through you.
There was a shuttle bus service with stops outside a lot of the camping grounds. It ran from 7am - 3am Fri & Sat, 7am - midnight on Sun. It cost $12 (aud) for a day pass (unlimited trips) or $6 (aud) one way, I would assume that they will be doing this but if you want to be certain - PI Bus Lines - ph 0064 3 5952 2500
Don't piss the cops off (and there will be truckloads of them) they carry guns!
You're not allowed to take in hard chily bins, glass or alcohol. Food and alcohol are available on site. If you're not doing the grandstand thing, take a folding camping chair, much more comfortable. Binoculars can come in handy too - we got some for about $60 in duty free.
Nightlife in Cowes was pumping, they closed the main streets, had bands playing etc. All the shops stay open and they just about all have GP Tee Shirts, caps, photos etc for sale - we waited till Monday to buy what we wanted, by that stage, there was still heaps of stuff left and it was all at sale prices.
I'm sure you will have a great time no matter what, the atmosphere is fantastic.

Fantastic. Thanks for that. We will be on the Island till later on the Monday so the cheap stuff will be an option. I might get enough gear to be able to wear it all year, every day.

We decided to stay till Monday cos of the traffic on Sunday.

Thanks Verity

Yeah, you're not wrong.

Fast yes - and the sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We went in 2006. Heavy fog and pretty chilly in the morning then it burned off and was fairly warm but then light rain arrived the same time as the main event MotoGP race which made it very confusing to know who was where (they were pitting in and changing to their wet bikes). Real 4 seasons in one day stuff (a lot like NZ really). Siberia seemed to be the best place to watch from (we had general admission tickets and wandered around the track a lot). Stayed in Melbourne and got the bus down.

OK guys and gals.

There are a number of budget places around Phillip Island if you want to stay.

I would get in quick if this is your scene ..... .

I will post some detailed motel / hotel digs soon.

Cheers

Pack your togs. Have a swim on the beach at Cowes and then a gellato and beer to follow. Magic place, Phillip Island. And windy.

Hmm, I'm thinking that might be the best bet for me. I've made a few enquiries and it seems that motel accomodation is scarce at best. Now I'll just have to figure out how to get my bike from here to there

Cool thanks for that. I think I will get a stand seat. I recon the party on Saturday night might mean an 8am ish start instead of a 6 ish start. I wanted to see what the VIP passes were like cos it would be cool to be on the pit roof but they are not on sale yet. As we are going I recon it is worth making the most everything. But Siberia it is.

I recon you are on to it Oscar............ so get me a 8 passes please :innocent:

Yes. It is a big plus not have to get out of the grounds after the meeting. Just drive to Cowes to eat or what ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For me it was good to just wander up to the circuit real early, put the chairs out at the L/h kink of the main straight. (You gotta be early!)
Awesome... So close and the sound and speed sensation. Stop! I'm dribbling!

The trick is I think - if you are not booking a stand seat - is to wander around during Friday & Saturday practice/racing and decide where YOU think it's best.

Believe me the racing on Sat is worth the trip alone. Went with some guys once and they went on the piss in Cowes on the Sat afternoon. Not me - I can do that at home:sunny:

Enjoy:yes:
