Christchurch to Auckland

I've got myself booked on the Picton to Wellington ferry on the 8.00am sailing on Good Friday. Got to be in Picton by 7.00am. I'll be leaving Christchurch at about 2.00am and no later than 2.30am. Depending on how I feel when I get to Taupo where I can stay if need be, I'm giving some seriouse thought in doing this, from Chch to Acker's in one hit. I'm no spring chicken now so I'll be applying some caution to this. However I have read somewhere that if you can prove that you have ridden 1000 k's in 24 hours there is some biker organisation that acknowledges this by way of a badge or certificate etc. I think they require EFTPOS reciepts etc. Anyyone got any info on this? The other thing I need to ask has anyone done this or something similar.

Your attention is always sharper when you're riding with others and are less likely to miss a turn or a hazard. See if you can meet up with others on the way.

Personally I would also find the route with teh most corners, SH1 is a mind-number

Invercargill to Rotorua in a day, he's 58 & had recently had both hips replaced & wasn't bike fit, this was on his 1995 Moto Guzzi 1100 Sport ! This was by lonesome aswell !

I have ridden Auckland to Greymouth twice now, just ride straight through mate, catch a couple of hours sleep on the ferry and your good to go again for the second leg.

Rode solo both times.

That sounds like bit of an exageration. You think about it ridin one of the most uncomfortable bikes ever built (also one of the best looking and handling Guzzi's) . How long Invercargill to picton 8 hrs ish, 3 hours plus ferry crossing and then another at least 5 hours to Vegas. And he was 58 years old. This guy probably had his hips replaced AFTER the trip.

I've just returned from March Hare. Timaru to picton 9 to 5ish, 3.5hrs ferry sailing. Wgtn to Auckland 8 hrs . Knackered at the end of it.

Its a long day, but it could be done. I attempted it, but the thought of a warm bed and sleep got the better of me at taupo. Called it a day at midnight. I was still really tired (and sore) the next morning heading to auckland. Didnt plan the day at all, just kept going till the mind said stop. Was on a 250.

I recon its easily done with the right preparation.

It'd be easily possible on the Guzzi SR :yes: Did from home here to Huntly many many years ago in 21hrs on a XL250 and thats 997km :yes: the 21hrs included the ferry crossing.
Left home at midnight fuelled the bike in chch plus a jerry can, rode through to Kiakoura topped up the tank with the extra fuel and got into Picton at 6am for the Freight ferry. Left Welly in hideous traffic and eventually rolled up the driveway of my mates place at Huntly at 9pm that evening.

Done sometng very similar a few years ago when I bought the ZZR1100 - 7am flight to Auckland, check the bike out. Go for a tiki tour, do the paperwork and leave for Wellington somewhere around 11:00am. Arrive in Wellington easily in time for the 10:00pm sailing only for it be delayed for four hours. Arrive Picton just on daybreak getting to Chch at about 10:30, absolutley dead on my feet. Do it all again tomorrow if I could.
