XR - Extra electrical accessories?

Hi there

I have a Road legal XR250.
Now the light on it is rubbish, how can one add additional lighting to it, when it doesnt have a battery?
It has one of those stator (whatever you call them), where the electrics run off the motor
Also thinking of trying to connect a ciggie plug if thats possible?

Any ideas

best option is do a search for Ballards XR shop in Auss. Next would be Baja Designs or summit over in US, do upgrades for desert racing etc. Seen various kits from time to time.

what year is the XR?
some CB250s have the same motor as the early XRs, but are 12v so electrics off one of those and you are most of the way there

Where there is no battery the electrics are usually running a "Total loss system"
It is unlikely to have a regulator or rectifier meaning its all running AC power not DC +12volts. If you are contemplating going to the extent of ciggie plug. ...Well depends what you want to run off the plug. If its a DC device you will need to fit a rectifier, but without a battery all you end up with is rectified AC not smooth DC. Some devices could be happy with this pulsating DC but others not.
What accessories are you planning on running ?

I think a GPS would appreciate reasonably good DC. So would prob need to install a rectifier / regulator and battery. There is plenty to go wrong in attempting such a feat so checkout others that have done the same.

Too bad, I can run it on AA batteries :)

But what about the lights? What can I do about that??

The problem you have is the rating of the alternator. Unless you can uprate that you'll never get more watts out of it than it can produce. F5 Dave has mentioned Ballards - maybe they can supply the gear. The alternators on bikes like the XR have a rotor with magnets in it and a stator and to get more grunt out of it probably requires a better rotor and a different set of windings on the stator.

The alternatives are to find a higher output light like one with a halogen or something like that giving more light per watt used, because if you just try to put a higher wattage bulb in it will just suck the power and glow more yellow. Knowing the XR's, and most trail bikes for that matter, kinda dim the lights if you toot the horn and things like that there aren't many watts to spare from the alternator.
