G'day all, I was just wondering whether Guinea pigs are able to survive in the wild, I was walking down my driveway today(Ive got quite a long driveway with bush on one side) and I Happened to see a Bloody massive guinea pig sitting there eating grass on my neighbors lawn.
I mean this was definately a guinea pig(I have seen guinea pigs before) and it was a fuckin massive one as well it would have been the size of a small rugby ball at least.
The reason I was wondering if the survived in the wild is because in the bush next to my property are wild cats and I know dogs go down there as well as other predators. The guinea pig was definately not my neighbors pet as hes got two dogs, one of which is a bloody agressive dobermann which would probably eat it.

Where do you think they came from?

They're food for practically anything, hence the rapid reproduction rate. In fact you could regard them as a meat "fruit".

But yes, they live in the wild (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_pig).

I'd ring DoC, because they're a pest.

Don't call DoC, call the dobermann, much more entertaining.

"Here boy!"

Feral guinea pigs can grow to enormous sizes in the wild. Dogs and cats aren't a problem, in fact they can grow to the point where even crocodiles won't fuck with them. They can be extremely dangerous when cornered and use their giant bunny teeth to disembowel their attackers. In fact, they are regularly hunted in an effort to reduce the population in some parts of the world, in order to ensure the safety nearby villagers.

Saw the thing again today, it heard me coming(I was taking the wheelie bin down the driveway) and ran under my neighbors house. I think Im going to watch this Guinea pig carefully, Id be curious as to what size it will grow to. If it gets out of hand Ive got an air rifle that I can deal to it with.

Gaah! It's NOT going to get any bigger than it is now. The pictures shad posted were of Capybara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capybara)

So Mr Patd0g's "guinea pig" is actually a capybara then?

Dunno about an air rifle, looks like that thing is going to get pretty big, air rifle might just infuriate it.

mmmm pork sounds good lol, this guinea pig is a fuck load bigger than your petshop variety guinea pig like I said before it looks like its the size of a rugby ball, and a mate of mine has got a fully suppressed .22 which would probably do the job, if not its the baseball bat.....

Shit... only the size of a rugby ball? It must be only a baby. Watch out for the parents, they can't be too far away, and they are very protective of their young.
I hope that there aren't any families with small children living nearby!

Air rifle to shoot that? You'd be better off with an AK!

Far more fun than merely shooting it... build an interesting trap and video it

But you need more than one, given the amount of flesh each provides.

I find them nice in a stew, particularly if you include the tiny little smooth muscles (heart, kidney etc.) to flavour the broth

Not when they're as big as Mr Patd0g's capybara is going to grow to.

I reckon spit roasting would be the deal

Last night I watched Anthony Bourdains "No Reservations" on Prime T.V what a great programme he travels the world and tries traditional dishes (he's a Chef) Last night he was in Peru and they had Guinea Pigs for lunch! They were extremely tasty and apparently are a staple diet in the mountainous areas around Peru. Very Informative!!!:whocares:
