View Full Version : Bos taken her last ride.

Poor old Bo has taken her last ride. She was a faithful mutt and a good mate that we rescued from a bad home and a horrific accident.

As some of you are aware - she has been suffering and has generally been in decline for some time and acting upon advice from our Vet who has been wonderful - Bo passed away this evening in an act of mercy to end the indignities that life had heaped upon a pretty good mate. That dog an I have walk miles and bloody miles together and I'm probably alive today because of it. She faithfully guarded our house, never failed to alert us to visitors, chased rabbits with great enthusiasim and little success and although many of you have only seen her in her decline, we remember her in her flush of youth and I'd like to think she forgave us the final act.

Trust me - there are people I'd dispatch with less tears than my little mate.

RIP Bo - I hope theres a beach , rabbits to chase and sausages to steal where ever you are.

Sounds like Bo was one lucky pooch!! & obviously lavished with loads of love & affection!! Tis far better to let her go peacefully, than carry on in pain though, so be gentle on yourselves ok!

Big  from me, to you both!

RIP Bo

Paul, my thoughts are with you and Vicki.

You will rarely find a friend so loyal as your faithful mutt. They really are man's best friend.

Rest in peace Bo.

with apologies to Rudyard Kipling.........

"Master, pity Thy servant! She is deaf and three parts blind
She cannot hear Thy Commandments. She cannot read Thy Mind.

Oh, leave her not to her loneliness nor make her that kitten's scorn.
She hath had no other God than Thee since the year that she was born.

Lord, look down on Thy Servant! Bad things have come to pass.
There is no heat in the midday sun, nor health in the wayside grass.

Her Bones are full of an old disease-her torments run and increase.
Lord, make haste with Thy Lightnings and grant her a quick release!"

RIP Bo

Thats the sad thing about our trusted pets, they can't stay long enough.
oddly enough for some reason they seem to be closer friends than most human ones.

Damn straight.

Poor old lass got a bit crotchetty in her old age but I guess we never see it do we? We tried our best with her but there was nothing more we could reasonably do except let her go while there was still some pride left. Been a tough day and I'm off to bed. Thanks folks - dumb stuff I know but sharing helps and I'm grateful....

Fuck that beach seemed awful big and lonely tonight and my heart shattered at every shadow running at the edge of the light..... Ah shit... Gods speed girl.

G'night

Paul & Vicki, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. It's a hard decision to make, to have a beloved pet put to sleep. But it's also a very brave decision and allows your pet one last moment of dignity. In my eyes it's the ultimate act of love.

I hope the pain eases quickly. The memories will, of course, always be with you.

love and hugs xx

You made a wonderful home for Bo. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your loyal friend. You guys did well :)

Our sympathies Paul and Vicki, Bo was a neat dog. We went thru this not so long ago ourselves.....I avoided walking the beach for months afterwards.

Not at all, Paul. My condolences - I know Eggs Zachary how you feel, having had to bury our dog a few years ago after he got hit by a car right outside our house, with me watching (and calling to him - the reason he ran across the road).
Having lost my Dad and the dog, I can tell you the dog caused me more anguish.

Thanks everyone - the kind words and thoughts eased a lumpy night at our place. However, we all agreed this morning that it was the only choice and we are all feeling a bit better about it.

There are some good people here - thanks again - much appreciated

Ahh bugger, sorry to hear about this - I've gone through it twice, Wong our labradour went out at a good age, buried him under the rose bushes at our first home in Mangere. Lucky, a real mutt - dumb as a plank and the opposite of our labbie grew on us as well, suffered in his old age, but still wanted to hang around and fought for his time until we buried him under the plum tree.

:weep: Always get a little tear in the eye when I think about our family dogs that have passed on.

My younger brother has our 3rd family dog now, a Samoyed called Oxford who seems to be a combination of both our previous dogs!

FOUR FEET

I have done mostly what men do,
And pushed it out of my mind;
But I can't forget, if I wanted to,
Four-Feet trotting behind.

Day after day, the whole day through--
Wherever my road inclined--
Four-Feet said, 'I am coming with you!'
And trotted along behind.

Now I must go by some other round--
Which I shall never find--
Some where that does not carry the sound
Of Four-Feet trotting behind.

Our 11 yo dog met the vet for the final time last week - it's not easy no matter how much you know its for the better. I only hope someone will be allowed to do it for me when I reach that stage rather than keeping me hanging on in drooling incontinence.
Kipling did a few poems about dogs - "The Power Of The Dog" is a good one.

from THY SERVANT A DOG (1930)

HIS APOLOGIES

Master, this is Thy Servant. He is rising eight weeks old.
He is mainly Head and Tummy. His legs are uncontrolled.
But Thou has forgiven his ugliness, and settled him on Thy Knee...
Art thou content with Thy Servant ? He is very comfy with Thee.

Master, behold a Sinner ? He hath done grievous wrong.
He hath defiled Thy Premises through being kept in too long.
Wherefore his nose has been rubbed in the dirt,
and his self-respect has been bruisèd.
Master, pardon Thy Sinner, and see he is properly loosèd.

Master - again Thy Sinner ! This that was once Thy Shoe,
He hath found and taken and carried aside, as fitting matter to chew.
Now there is neither blacking nor tongue, and the Housemaid has us in tow.
Master, remember Thy Servant is young, and tell her to let him go !

Master, extol Thy Servant ! He hath met a most Worthy Foe !
There has been fighting all over the Shop - and into the Shop also !
Till cruel umbrellas parted the strife (or I might have been choking him yet).
But Thy Servant has had the Time of His Life -
and now shall we call on the vet ?

Master, behold Thy Servant ! Strange children came to play,
And because they fought to caress him, Thy Servant wentedst away.
But now that the Little Beasts have gone, he has returned to see
(Brushed - with his Sunday collar on -) what they left over from tea.

. . . . . . . . . . . .

Master, pity Thy Servant ! He is deaf and three parts blind,
he cannot catch Thy Commandments. He cannot read Thy Mind.
Oh, leave him not in his loneliness; nor make him that kitten's scorn.
He has had none other God than Thee since the year that he was born !

Lord, look down on Thy Servant ! Bad things have come to pass,
There is no heat in the midday sun nor health in the wayside grass.
His bones are full of an old disease - his torments run and increase.
Lord, make haste with Thy Lightnings and grant him a quick release !

“The Power of the Dog”
Rudyard Kipling

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie—
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find—it’s your own affair—
But . . . you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!).
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone—wherever it goes—for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve.
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long—
So why in—Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
Because. Just because.
