Wobbles

Hi all,
Due to downsizing my garage, my faithful little RS is up for sale. I thought I'd post on here first as I have absolutely no idea of what I should ask so wondered if any of you lot would be able to offer a guide, or even be interested in buying it off me. I know this is a Kiwi site, but so many of you are from abroad I thought it would be worth a stab. Here's the blurb I'll be putting in the ad wherever I decide to put it.
"
Honda CB250RS 1980 caferacer.
With the heaviest of hearts I'm having to sell my faithful little companion. I've devoted so much of myself to get to where it is now. I've owned it since1995. As you can see it's not a standard RS. I had the alloy tank, seat, dummy oiltank(storing battery/electrics) & mudguards made by Custom Tank & Design using the same tank pattern as used for Hailwoods 250/6 restored M/cycle museum bike. Nice touch is he put little captive nuts so I could use the steel vintage Honda wing badges. The rims are new Akront with stainless spokes. I used clipons for the right look. Digital speedo, analogue tacho. Foam pod filter and rejetted on dyno so pulls nicely. New Hagon shocks. New rear tyre. Ducati 916 pegs. Fireblade gear linkage. Halogen headlight. The list goes on. It's not built for concors as I wanted that traditional caff racer patina, but I guess it's time to hand it over to the next owner who can project their ideas onto it: paint it, polish it but you gotta love it!
Turns every head that sees it"

NO!!!
Seriously though, all the best for the sale, i can testify how many heads this turns. On a ride from South London to the Ace cafe I would say 90% of the pedestrians had a look, then when we got there, the classic Honda bods were literally drooling over it!
Sorry i never got back in touch, I'm still in Reading with the folks!! The bike is going through revision 2, including a custom/home made seat, shorter still rear mudguard and fitment of a CM125 tank in white with black scallops (once the rust has been sorted)
Pictures to be posted soon for the rest of the forum...
Actually, while i'm on here, i'll be visiting both Aus and NZ in August and September. If anyone can recommend some cool bike haunts than i can accidentally find with the missus, let me know!!

Hi all,
xwhatsit:
What speedo are you using? I'm hunting for a round speedo with a tripmeter and yours appears to fit the bill.
If anyone is interested, I found a copy of the Honda workshop manual for the CB250RS:

Hmmmm,
Been a while, so mine is up to this point. Could'nt believe the amount of filler that was on the duck tail and mudguard, plus 4 coats of paint. This bike will be heaps lighter. Don't know if I mentioned it but got approval from MVR for the 500 engine so I'll document it as I go.
Wobbles, park it in the garage, cover it in a cloth, and DON'T sell it. Come back in a few years and you will be so pleased you kept her.

I bought some clip ons from a US ebay site for just under $100AUD delivered which I was pretty happy with, and some bar end mirrors again from ebay for something ridiculous like $25AUD delivered. More than happy with that.
This is a pretty slow project but she is slowly getting there. Pinched some spare rear sets off my GSXR600 so will be having a go at knocking up a bracket to mount them properly.
This is kind of the vibe I'm going for with mine. Lots of work to do! Excuse slight photoshop to lower the seat into the position I want it.

The bike is very much going to have that 'home built' look. I basically just want to clean up what I have in roughly the style I'm after and get riding again. I'll save the real time and effort for the box of Kawasaki H1 parts I'm about to get my hands on...

The Win.
lots of progress so here goes. As you can see i went and got a battery and built a battery box behind the newly covered seat (pretty cool hey) the next job was then to wire up all the electrics so that they were all hidden away and install the round headlight. Al;so the indicators and taillight went on plus the sharp rear end and then I had to test if it would all work......it did'nt.........of course..... so lots of effing round later I now have a full working elec system. I;m still not happy with the rear duck tail so will continue work on it. The motor is now on the bench and is next for the raping prcocess.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the CB250RS front master cylinder or alternative/upgrade?
Mines going to take more to repair than it's probably worth the hassle and I can't get my hands on an original right now. I'm looking at a KTM 525 EXC brembo master cylinder at the moment but I'm unsure if it has the microswitch for the brake light or if it's going to be too big.

Hey tychver, I took my thoroughly seized master cylinder down to me local wreaker and he managed to free the cylinder by using backpressure on a hydraulic rig. did not cost to much and the I'm going to try to clean up the bore myself. one thing I have discovered is that a good bearing/seals shop do all the seals at a lot lower price than the originals.

Well folks, massive progress with the ol’girl so bear with me and I’ll get it all down. Had a hiatus for awhile as I got busy but I was really unhappy with the look with the original tank and awful tailpiece. One of my main places to get stuff is the local tip shop and it didn’t let me down. Hidden was a 1972? CB350 tank. Badly dented but all the badges and fuel cap all intact. It fitted beautifully over the front grommets but needed extensive modification to fit at the back. After a lot of discussion and angst, I finally went at it with an angle grinder. The local welder did a fabulous job and it now fits beautifully. This of course ruined the seat so now that has to be redone. The tip shop came thru again for the tail piece, which was Taiwanese steam cleaner suitably modified. I then found a wrecked VFR750 to add some more bits and a ZX650 provided a lovely brake master cylinder. Unfortunately my original brake calliper was US so whilst down the local wrecker (rip off merchant) I found a CB750F calliper mounting bracket….So THANK YOU JESTER…I now have your plug’n’play 270mm disc, twin calliper brakes…utterly fukin’ brilliant. The best bit so far is most of the parts I am using could easily be bought new and quick over the web, but I’m having so much more fun finding and using stuff that keeps the costs right down (the noo) and challenges your ingenuity to make it all go together as an attractive cohesive whole. Hope you enjoy the photos…Oh yes I now have a 9 wk old Boerboel…he’s lovely and will be nice and huge.
Now of course I have no excuses not to put the 500 engine in….

I bought and fitted CB400n-forks, which have the same diameter (33mm) and give you the option of double-disc 240mm or - with CBX750, CB900F (or FT500?)-calipers - 276mm brake-disc....and this combo does work!
I purchased a CB250RS front and rear to graft onto a Yamaha, hence why I found this thread. A CB900F caliper will bolt onto the front (as I have one) but the single pot version is EXACTLY the same as the CB250, so you gain nothing. You'd need a double pot upgrade, like the CB900C had. The master cylinder on the CB250RS is EXACTLY the same as my 900. This is pretty odd since the 900 has double disks. I could be why people on here are complaining about the braking being poor, the master cylinder may not be the best choice for the caliper.

Francois,
The CB900 caliper is the same, however the diameter of the piston that creates the brake px is larger and its a more complex design. This allows for the twin disc set up. I've finally gotton the piston out of the brake caliper and am hunting for some new seals. I also have now fitted a VF1000F master cylinder which is also exactly the same as the CB900F. So that combined with braided lines on a 278mm disc will be HEAPS of stopping power. Also as the plus, the weight of the brake cylinder and disc is nearly half that of the original CB250RS. So a lot less unsprung weight.
Out of interest its all a bit slow up here. We've have a record 'wet' of over 2500mm including 700mm in 3 days so getting to the shed is a bit hard, hence ther lack of progress.

Hey guys, just registered.
I'm Wouter, 18 years old studying mechinal engineering and living in Holland
Maybegunnadoo, remember the first video you posted about a guy kicking a CB250RS with a 500cc engine ?
That's my bike now !
The owner got demotivated in finishing the bike, so he sold it too me :niceone:
He has done alot of work allready, the engine is from a FT500, which he converted to kickstart, and installed a compression release lever.
When I bought the bike I noticed alot of rust near the swing arm. I decided to take the whole bike apart and repaint it. I had to reweld a part of the frametube near the swingarm because of the rust.
I've just finished the front and swingarm, starting to assemble the bike to fit the new parts.

Your project is nice mate, a very different style than mine :first:
If you need any info about the conversion, just ask :msn-wink:
By the way.. Big thanks Jester for that brake information ! Just ordered a cb750sc caliper and a cb900f disc :niceone:

Wouter,
Nice looking bike, :niceone:especially the FT engine. It gives a really different look compared to the Xl500 engine. I found a bloke who was offering a 305 big bore kit but unfortunately no stock and none coming in. So i'm going to hunt Jap websites in the hope of tracking it down.
Can you send some images of the mounting and the kickstart?

The mounting of the ft500 is just like the xl500 exactly the same as the cb250rs engine, you just have to drill the back mounting holes in the frame.
The kickstart conversion is alot of work, you'll need alot of parts from a xl 500 engine and machine the head to fit the decompression lever.
You'd better go for the xl500 engine.
The only optical differences on my engine are a starter-housing and a deeper oilpan , so the xl500 engine will look just as good :msn-wink:
Big bore is also an option indeed, you can keep the stock pipes ( but I guess you don't want that)
Received the brake parts today
But the bad news is that the caliper mounting adaptor is wrong.. The wierd thing is that the right caliper mounting on the cb750sc is the same as the bol'dors... but the left one is not

Thread hijack but this is kinda THE cb250rs thread anyway now lol.
Pics of my ratbike CB250RS.
Work so far:
Cycleworks exhaust.
Battery compartment removed and battery replaced with a tiny 1.2Ah SLA up under the seat. Electrics formerly mounted on the comparment are zip tied up to the frame under the seat.
2 hour paint job on tank, seat cowl and fender.
Painted the frame with subframe paint
Painted the engine with engine enamle. It's filthy at the moment though so it looks shit in the pictures and I got petrol on the sprocket cover which stripped the paint off.
Jetting is #130 main with an XL250S needle on the last clip which means it runs richer through the midrange. It seems Honda jetted the midrange quite lean on the CB250RS, probably due to the accelerator pump and to improve economy. Quite a lot of owners seem to be reporting pinging/missing at half throttle? The mid throttle pickup has improved anyway.
I was going to do more performance work on the engine but I think I might just build a functional streetfighter/ratbike out of a 400 4cylinder. Tasteless I know :P

The braking ratio and "feel" is based on the bore ratio of the caliper and master cylinder. The caliper has the same bore (900F versus 250RS). I have not measured the master cylinder and didn't look to see what the diameter marking is, but I was just commenting that it looks exactly the same when I picked it up.
The front caliper mount off a CB900C does NOT fit the CB250RS. The disk does bolt onto the hub but the caliper mount requires you to cut off and reweld a mounting hole. Had I been paying attention and just measured the CB900C in my shed I would have noticed this before ordering a spare setup from the US. I think I would have been better off grafting a dual disk 400 front end on the Yamaha. We'll see how this works out. The rear rim has a different drum stay than the Yamaha, so I need to mill and modify the swing arm to fit the CB250RS rim. hardly seems worth the effort.....

Hi, This is the most knowledgeble thread on the rs I can find so far, I have been donated about 60% of a cb250rs - 1982 from the reg plate.
Unfortunately its missing both wheels `, axels and swing arm. Can any body tell wether I can fit cb250n wheels and axels and brake calipers as a short term measure as its easier to get all the missing parts , ie wheel rims, axle bolts drum brake part calipers etc . At the momen for the genuine parts I have to hope they show up in a blue moon on ebay.

I sold rims wheels etc not long ago and even have a swingarm laying around, you could have if you pay frieght but may be cheaper too buy one there
the wheels should fit at worst you may have too make or turn new wheel spacers but as long as the axle holes are the same it shouldn't be a problem but remember that you can change bearings and dust seals too suit,Iv'e changed the wheels on my CB250RS to 17inch have alook http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/entry.php/2074-CB500RS-the-Creation

One of the chinese import GY 125's the Urban dz125 has a 4.10 x 18 spoked rear tyre on the wheel , I was wondering if would fit as I can get a complete rear wheel for just under £100 new.

Yes you can take the cover off its only the rocker cover... and will-not affect the engines timing at all....just dont dont play with the cam shaft and timing chain.
.the rockers are held inplace by the rocker shaft that screws into the rocker cover from the side one front and one rear

Fuck that. I'd be demanding to see the "receipt" from the courier co. and still having a crack at them. Its not unusual for a courier driver to "sign" a receipt and just leave your shit on the front step so they dont have to come back: they only get paid once no matter how many times they go round your house and you arent there. a LOT of dishonest fuckers work in that industry (dont get me wrong, and some good ones)

Can any sugest a replacement top yoke that dosnt have bar mounts - So I can use clip on's?
cheers
Be careful about just replacing the top yoke as not all top and bottom yokes are the same.....
what size forks are you using??
Arent standard CB250RS 33mm??
I have a MC19 front end on my one which is 37mm,I also have a MC17 front end which is 35mm....
Now the secret to fitting the MC19 front end I found was to remove the bottom bearing housing from the standard CB250rs stem and place it on too the MC19 stem which gave me a perfect fit as the two stems are the same length

I'll be using standard cb250rs forks and bottom yoke for the moment until I can find some gb400 ones. So So i guess there could be a lot of trial and error involved trying to find a drop in replacment.

Until the mess with the courriers is sorted Ive managed to source a rather tatty but cheap set of rs forks and yorks - which with some work will be usable. I wont be sending these off for renovation!
GB400 forks are as rare as hens teeth in these parts. I can see why it's a nice bike who would want to break one. So looks like finding forks from one is going to be a long job. The same for a bol dor caliper and brake disk.
In the short term Im looking for a RS caliper for the front wheel however I dont like the mirror mount point being moulded in the the master cylinder housing , can any sugest a common master cylinder Ican replace it with with out the mount point?
I dont know anything about brakes except I want them to work when I need them  so I suspect its more technical / complex than I expect.
cheers

Ive got a complete front brake off a CBX250rs. Ive never used it as it came with the bike and it will need a rebuild. Calper looks good but the lever will need refinishing if thats any help.

Amazing, wrote off to Yoshi a while back and they finally got back to me.
Had to share this....
Dear Sir/Madam,
We are very sorry for the delay of our reply. Since we receive tons of e-mails from all over the world but our capacity is limited, sometimes we would not be able to answer soon. We are sorry for the inconvenience but please understand the circumstances.
Thank you for having interest in our product. However, it is so old that most current Yoshimura staff have never seen it. It is more than 20 years ago. We would not suppose any dealer or shop have it in stock. If someone still have the new one, he must be maniac and never release it.
Thank you for your confirmation. And, once again sorry our late reply.
Best Regards,
Yoshimura Japan Co., Ltd.

Good Morning Yoshimura,
In the recent past your company manufactured a 305cc big bore kit for an 82/83 Honda CB250RS/XL250S.
May I please enquire if you still have them available and if not would you be aware of any of your dealers that might still stock this item.
Yours Sincerely,
Daniel Morse

your not wrong they are fun got old xl100k2 and even though its slow its really great fun just got fix it up again
think compared to 26-30HP for mine, but I imagine that the torque would be mountainous. I love singles!
i rekon gb 400 be the bomb love look these bikes esp the spoke wheeled ones
great to get gb 500 there rare though good luck with your project
take your time do things right and double check everthing your be fine
i got cafe racer book u chould have just got pictures really but no use to me its from the 70s but might give you few ideas just if you want it i send it to you
Wouldn't mind a GB400 front end, especially as my front brake is pretty inadequate (always were apparently, from new). However I really doubt I'd be able to afford it; besides, flexing and twisting from the front end is just character, right? :D To buy an entire front end just to make my cheap clipons fit would be a wonderfully me thing to do, however.
I'll get some calipers after the girlfriend's b'day this Sunday. [Got her on the back of the bike around some quiet local streets for the first time this week -- she had a ball and wants to ride more! So getting a single seat may be a priority :D][/QUOTE]

Could I fit a xr500 barrel and piston to my engine?
I doubt it but worth the ask.

Tried it with the CB250rs motor,It can be done but you also need a 500 top engine casing and need to modify the 250 bottom engine casing.....so yeah it can be done but your better off to find a complete engine either a XR/XL/GB 500 or a 600 anything can be made too fit

Well I was hopping to have some progress to show you but it's been a funny year. The seat is being a real problem I dont have the facillities to work metal and dont have the skill for fibre Glass. Been let down twice by custom seat makers people have reccomended. So anybody know of anyone selling them the right size for the for fame any place in the world.
I will just have to bite the bullet and import one.
Ended up in the hospital as it turns out I had a very sever reaction to the clear coating I sprayed on the frame etc and that was after doing it outside and with a mask! So going to have to get some one else to volunteer to finish that
Going to finish this bike if it kills me

Try looking under "XRB500" from recall that was the native GB to the UK. Where as all the GB400's would be imports only. Only difference really the mag wheels.

Was just about to sleep when I stumbled on this thread. It appears to be THE worldwide RS thread now! Just read the lot, and it's now 1.45am here in England - need sleep! I just registered on the site purely for this thread and the pics. The info has been great. I've just bought a rusty 1980 250RS for £50 which is going to get some Brat treatment. Sure I'll be back here again soon. Thanks for all the info everyone! I'm posting the build as it happens here http://www.thechopperunderground.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=63609 albeit irregularly!
Cheers!
