Biker killed by falling tree branch

A Taumarunui man died last night after being hit by a falling tree branch while riding his motorbike.

In what police described as a "freak accident", it is believed that the branch fell at the exact moment that Kelly Donovan, 36, rode past on Lairdvale Rd Extension, hitting him in the head.

Police said Mr Donovan, a local businessman with a young family, died at the scene.

Freak bad luck - but perhaps he was luckier than the Napier guy that had the same happen but 'survived' - as a comatose vegetable, so none of his friends or family could move on until he died about 3 years later.

I see they have just found a lady whom run off the Rimutuka's last night. Still alive and lucky to have a cellphone on her in the car.

Also sad about that student been crushed by a falling log yesterday.

A workmate said she saw a bike into back of a van accident on the motorway yesterday morning. No mention anywhere so hoping it wasn't a fatality.

Not riding at the moment but still looking out for you guys as I am commuting and been critual of some of the dangerous things I see still. Take care

Unfortunately the student hit by the tree has died too, her parents had flown from Taiwan to be with her and they turned off her life support. I just got an email from a friend in Germany and she was telling me about a bad storm they had there - a child was killed when a door flew off a building and hit him.
