View Full Version : idling at 10,000 revs!

OK, progress of a sort.
Put the cleaned and rebuilt carbs back on the bike, put the rest of the bike back together. Primed it, ran some fuel through the carbs, went away and had a break.
Turned it over just now, and it fired. And immediately revved to 10,000 rpm and stayed there.
Why? What should I be looking for?
I'm about to take the tank back off and have another look, but all advice, hints and tips gratefully received.
On the other hand, it does now seem to be running on all four cylinders......

Carbs not correctly sealed into the inlet manifold rubbers.

What sort of bike is it?

OK, so I've had a look at the carb assembly and the inlet manifold.
The carbs are fully into the inlets, the circlips are as tight as they'll go.
Is there any basic test you can do, to confirm this is the problem?
And if there's an easy fix without stripping the whole lot off the bike and starting again, i'd love to know it.....

idle adjust too high? (its commonly changed during carb strip downs)

may be stating the obvious but have you checked your idle screw? are all the baffle flaps moving freely in the carbs? Spray some carb cleaner through and see if any change.

have a look at the throttle cables, where they meet the carbs, there will be the idle adjuster screw, turn the throttle & see if it returns,if not remove the throttle cables,if the carbs return, the problem is at the throttle,if not its in the carbs, strip & check everything again, reassemble & check the return, before putting back on the bike,I hope that a help!!

If you are running a GE gas turbine in your bandit then I would have thought that you have it about spot on...actually I have nothing useful to contribute..sorry :dodge:

Yep, next up on the list is check that the throttle is actually returning all the way correctly.

Doesn't appear to be the idle or the throttle cable.
The butterfly valves open and close with the throttle. As far as I can tell, they close all the way (they are possibly open a tiny crack when the throttle is closed, but it's so small I can't tell if I'm imagining it. Is this normal?)
If the idle screw is fully out, is the idle stop (the bit the screw touches) supposed to touch that part of the housing? There's about 3-4mm of gap. But there doesn't appear to be anything blocking the free return of the rotating part - the bit that opens and closes the butterfly valves.

Maybe your carb slides are in the wrong way round with the cut away to the front , they should be at the back of the carb facing the airbox . or the needle chips aren't on or holding the needles in place ?? Hard when ya cann't see the carbs as it will be something fairly easy to fix if only been pulled apart .

Seen it done before, CV slides put back in 180 deg rotated.

Back down to 6,000 rpm. And three cylinders (a different duff cylinder than last time).
I am making a tactical withdrawal for the time being.
Just called the workshop that rebuilt the carbs. Apparently an air leak probably wouldn't cause the idle to shoot up to 10,000.
The slides in all four are facing the airbox.
The throttle does not appear to be jamming open, and appears to be rotating to a fully closed position.
The butterfly valves appear to be closing fully.
EDIT: If anyone in Auckland has a trailer or van they can lend me first thing tomorrow morning, please PM me.

Probably not, I had an air leak in my XJ750, real pain in the... but from memory maybe 5K or so. No worries while underway just embarrassing at the lights

Try Frosty, he has a van, but I'm not sure if he is available.
Send him a PM and ask nicely.
