View Full Version : Scorpygirl crashes!!!

Scorpygirl
18th March 2007, 16:56
After reading a couple of posts about people binning their bikes this weekend, I thought I better write up my tale of woe. I crashed the Virago on Friday night coming home from work. I was riding along Sandringham Rd, in the bus lane, and a car did a right hand turn into a street right in front of me. I braked as hard as I could - left a skid mark apparently, but hit him in the passenger door. I can't say too much more at this stage. I am OK apart from a very sore upper arm, shoulder, mid-side area and a bruised finger and thigh. Thank goodness for really good gear!!!

The bike has bent forks and handlebars, a broken mirror and the other is twisted and a broken wind shield. That we can ascertain at this stage.

Oh well....watch this space.

Yip, got one witness who saw the whole thing, as he was waiting on the other side of the street to turn left. He said I didn't have a chance.

Damn, both of us are thankful you're ok. (me and principia, not me and my multiple personalities...)

fuck fuck fuck, people need to pay more attention when driving their cars though.

St Lukes rd today I was next to someone texting away, didn't even notice I was there.

Again, just happy you're in good enough condition to post here

Hey Scorpygirl......

Glad to hear you are finally going to go to the dr to get yourself checked out.

I sent Rhino heaps of pm's after our phone call last night after the accident happened.

Check out the riser's as well.
That can put the handlebars out of whack and then you think its the handlebars.

Plenty of ARNICA for the bruising....

Look forward to seeing the pics......

You know where to find me anytime.

Sorry about the bin Scorpy Girl. That's from one Scorp to another?? Just not too sure if your bin would have happened if you had not been riding in the bus lane. Maybe, maybe not but for some time I have been advocating the dangers of riding in bus lanes. Still does not excuse the car for turning without due care and attention. Hope all goes well for you etc.

Yes, I know what you mean about bus lanes, I am always cautious coming up to intersection for this reason, but this time it was just too close. They were both saying I should not have been there cause it was between 4 - 6 pm and even the cop wasn't sure. Seems there are quite a few drivers that don't know the by-law about bikes in the bus-lane.

I will be even more nervous about bus-lanes from now on!!!

Yes, it has taken me a while to get my head around it. Also there is a lady passenger, the owner of the car, that is part of the biker community. She is a swinger on a side car too. She knew the lad that died last weekend. She looked after me and I don't want any repercussions for her or people that she may know.

I am OK. Thanks to all.

Sorry to hear about your bin...bloody bus lanes eh? Touch wood I havent had contact as yet, but know a heap who have, and some of them very good riders so although I'm sure you're going through the myriad of what-if's I hope you arent beating yourself up (I'm certain the cares done enough).

As for someone taking me out in such a way and even contemplating a mightier-than-thou "I dont think you are supposed to be using the bus lane" it'd be difficult not to replace their words with a set of carbon fibre knuckles. Although I go by the "its always my fault" mentality, there's no excuse for an arsey cager, especially just after you've been rag dolled over their car.

Hope everything works out for you and you are feeling better.

Appreciate your predicament and I guess the lady in question is rather upset, too. I'm sure you let her know you appreciate her efforts. The driver... another, "I didn't see you!"?

Your comments show there're two sides to incidents such as this, sometimes the driver is a genuine moron and should be slammed, but there are those who geuninely make a mistake and are very upset and remorseful at the mayhem they have caused. Maybe, hopefully, this one was the latter?

Glad your okay, there's too much of this going on lately!

Sandringham Rd, in the bus lane
That area i know too well for stupid drivers........i busted up myself really good doing just that not far from where u are on dom rd.
People seem to use those residential roads (linkin dom and sandringham) as a way for them to short cut. Im fine with that idea - but its pisses me off they do it so recklessly.
Someday a kid is going to killed on St Albans ave or similar because an idiot taking a short cut was not watching what he was doing.

Why Haldanes?
They aren't Yamaha dealers.
Ok they were once upon a time, but havent been for a couple of years now.

Henderson Motorcycles Ltd in Henderson are Yamaha dealers, I think Red Baron is too.

We talked to the assessor about where to take the bike and said that we bought it from Haldanes. He said that they were very good and because they had been Yamaha dealers in the past they would have all the contacts for parts. They have excellent mechanics there too. It didn't seem to be a problem to take it to them for the repairs.

Thanks again but all is good for a pillion space on Rhino's GoldWing. We went down to Gisborne last weekend and it was good to get back into the saddle if only as a pillion. Only a couple of ahhh moments, the worse one being seeing a rider down as we left Opotiki on the way home on Sunday. He was conscious and the ambos were with him but still flipped me for a while.

Today I actually really missed going for a ride on the bike. It was a nice day and not too hot. Bum!

The damage to the front part of the bike is more than we originally thought and it is now touch and go if she will be a write-off!!! The assessor is trying to do the best he can in negotiating the price, so at the moment it is a wait and see game.

Actually, in Auckland City we are allowed to ride our motorbikes in the bus lanes.
It is written in their laws etc. Came into effect a number of years ago.
The bus lanes are for motorbikes, buses and pushbikes.

(the motorway buslanes is another matter all together)

I guess in the 'deep south' where you come from your city council hasnt allowed that rule to change.

elle-f
15th April 2007, 07:28

and yep, i also thought that bus lane riding was illegal for anything but buses but about a month ago somebody said it was ok.

As everybody has said. I was doing nothing illegal at all and the insurance company have agreed with this!! I will not lose my no claim bonus or have to pay excess either.

Here is the information for your edification:

"Using bus lanes
Key facts about using bus lanes:

Bikes use bus lanes too! Buses, cycles and motorcycles are all authorised users of bus lanes, so keep an eye out for them. If you are turning, merging or accessing a driveway when a bus lane is operating, you can use the bus lane for up to 50 metres. Auckland City enforces the correct use of bus lanes. If you drive in a bus lane when it's operating, for any reason other then needing to turn within 50 metres, you risk a $150 fine.

Driving, parking or stopping on the lanes is prohibited during the times they operate. If you are parked or stopped on a lane at the wrong time, you will be given a parking ticket. You can drive in bus priority lanes outside of their operational times.

Auckland City bus priority lanes can be used by the following vehicles only:
buses. (A bus is defined in the new Land Transport Rule as a passenger service vehicle with 10 or more seats, including the driver's seat. This excludes tourist and shuttle buses)
cycles
motorcycles, motor scooters, mopeds
traffic enforcement and emergency vehicles.
Bus lanes on motorways operate differently than local road bus lanes in that motorcycles and cycles cannot use them.
Taxis (cars or shuttles with nine seats or less) may not use the bus priority lanes.

If you receive a $150 fine for driving illegally in a bus lane, you can pay your fine online.

Learn the rules and you'll get where you need to go faster! Bus lanes work best when everyone keeps to the lanes they should be in."

I am actually getting quite sick of people saying I should not have been in the bus lane. when this is the by-law in Auckland City. Motobikes can't ride in the buslanes on the motorways cause they are covered by Transit NZ and they say it is illegal. I tried to stop but it was too close. Yes, I have learnt a very big lesson and I am not doing the blame thing.

I actually agree there needs to be more promotion about this. On the signs to signify a bus lane they just show a picture of a bus and no memtion of bikes, pushies etc. Maybe this needs to be considered as there is heaps of confusion. Even the cop that attended my accident didn't know if it was the law or another urban myth!!

the bus lanes down here are bus, taxi and a picture of a push bike...

you could argue that the bike icon included motorbikes, if anyone argued against it I'd point out that the icon doent look like a downhill mountain bike either...

As per your comment about mis-information or lack of it ... not everyone lives in Auckland (thank god) so we have no clue about your by-laws or do i have any real need for them as i don't think i will be travelling there any time soon on me bike lol... yes education is the key the signage thing would clear up any issues i would say!!!thanks for the info glad you guys have a priviliged 50 metres right of way to turn into side streets makes sense in a more populated area alas i think Dunners will have to import some more refugee's or students to boost our entitlement to Bus-lanes :innocent:

It was me who red repped you. I forgot that you can't see who gave it. Green means people agree with you post red means they don't agree. I don't agree with your post that implied scorpygirl was in the wrong. I know you don't know the laws here up in auckland but if you don't know then don't comment. Don't let it bother you, like some people on this site, I get green and red rep just part and parcel of being part of the site. enjoy!

I had a ring from the assessor yesterday and my little bike is now being repaired!!! Yippee!!!!! They are still trying to source a fork leg and it may end up coming from the factory in Japan, therefore it might be another few weeks before we are reunited. But still it's all good news!!!

My bike has returned to her rightful home after a 2 month holiday at Haldanes. Not due to them but having to wait for parts. She looks magic!!! Just have to wait for a screen (on back order) and she will be back to her normal state before 16th March 2007. Yippee. Unfortunately my first ride on her will have to wait. Never mind, I will have something to look forward to. :scooter:
