Kitten no longer available... we found the owners!

On Saturday Sam found a kitten in our garden. Its not a baby kitten, but not yet a full grown cat. We "think" its a female and she's very very skinny, and when you stroke her you can feel all her bones...

Sam and I have totally fallen inlove with her... but unfortunatley because we live on Onewa Road we're too scared to keep her incase she gets squashed and neither of us can bring ourselves to keep her locked inside a 1 bedroom place day and night.

We asked all the nieghbors if they had lost a cat/kitten and no-one fronted up. Checked the bulliten board in the mall and still no luck.

The kitten is house trained, it knows how to use a kitty litter (pizza box with sand in it LOL), but it only goes to the toilet if you put it in the litter box and stand there watching it...

It also knows the sound of food. We brought it a box of kitten food and as soon as we took it out the shopping bag it heard the biscut things rattling inside and came running over meow'ing.

We're assuming it was once a pet of someone and either ran away or got lost and has been on its own for a week or more (cause its so skinny). We also got it a flea collar, which it hates lol

Anywho... its got a great character, it loves getting loved and stroked. Its not a very playful kitten, it doesn't chase after balls or string... and any sudden movements scare the shit out of it and it runs and hides in the shower.

I've got one person who "may" want it, but they can only let me know by the end of the week... and I don't really wanna leave it locked inside until then... If we don't find a home for it by the weekend we'll be taking it to the SPCA...

Oh... and whoever takes it will get naming rights lol, at the moment we're just calling it "kitten".

Heres some pics...

Very cute! Good luck finding her a home, have you tried places other than the SPCA? I lost all the email addresses when my computer died last month, but there is the Cats Protection Society and also something like the Auckland Animal Rescue Shelter. Check the phone book or post a message on the Trade Me pets and animals message board as members regularly post there.

Wow, she did good getting from Windy Ridge to Onewa Road in one piece!!! Obviously a survivor!

Good on you for looking hard to find her owners - and well done!

Let's hope she actually wants to go home after having seemingly fallen in love with your fish tank! LOL

lol yeah... I kinda got all sad when I saw the picture of her on TradeMe... I was like "awww now we really have to give her up". Thats a long time for a cat to be missing nearly a whole month... no wonder she's so damn skinny...

Oh well, just waiting for the owner to phone me and organise to pick her up... at least they get about 2 weeks worth of free food and a flea collar :)

Yeah Juggler is a pain in the butt... lol

Well done on finding her owner...... that is good news.

Yeah she will...... with a few hugs and kisses...... and a good feed tonight.

Wonder why she wandered away?
Had the owners moved recently and was 'Mimi' trying to find her way home again?
Had 'Mimi' jumped into a visitors or neighbours car un-noticed and managed to escape un-noticed.
The owners will have to keep a close eye on her for a few days....
Ol' wives tale and it does work: put butter on their paws... to teach it to stay home.

Dont give 'Mimi' any food tonight before they come to pick her up...
They wont want her to get carsick or poo everywhere in the car.

Yeah that does work... put butter on her paws and lock her in a toilet/bathroom for about an hour. The cat then licks all the butter off its paws and therefor also licks off any scents left on the feet... makes it not wonder as much... I'll mention that to the owners when they contact me...

*still hasn't heard from them*

I'm rapt to hear the kitten wasn't abandoned, just lost. See, Trade Me does have its uses! I don't blame you for being in two minds about handing her back, she looks really sweet.

I just had a look at the lost and found section and was amazed at how many lovely animals are currently missing. Here's hoping they all have a happy outcome like Mimi.

Shit I should have done that to the Ex Wife, to stop her from Wandering.

Bloody Nympho.

This is starting to fuck me off... still havn't heard from the stupid owners... even sent them another email yesterday explaining that the cat will be taken to SPCA on Friday and possibly put down (don't worry its not true... we'd keep it rather than putting it down or taking it to the SPCA.... but scare tactics might work)

Anyway... Kitten is really starting to annoy me... I'm a dog person at heart and its really Sam thats loving the damn thing...

*the things we put up with for love*

*dunno how I'll handle kids LOL*

That's really bad, there have been heaps of people contacting the owner through her lost ad (me included) and she has apparently been online during this time, so I wonder what the problem is? I don't like to be uncharitable but maybe she dumped the kitten and posted the missing notice, thinking no one will ever find it? Hope that's not true, wish I could help, but if you get stuck, post in that thread on the message board again and I am sure one of the rescue helpers will step in if necessary.

But, a dog person? How could you say that!

Placidfemme - re the drinking problem, check the other thread out....

I sure hope the owner checks her emails out soon.
But there will be someone on that section who will take the cat and look after it til the owner comes along.

I too have had dogs over the years as well as putty tats.
Once this putty tat passes away... there will be no more in this house.

lol my sister is the only cat lover in my family... We always had dogs back home. They're just way more fun than cats... you can love a cat when "it" wants to be loved, otherwise just shut up and feed it and it's happy lol

I don't mind cats, but if I had to choose I'd deffinatley get a dog... but Sam and I can't afford to have two dogs and we both want different dogs... lol so no puppies for us...

Well another day passes with no contact from the owner. By the looks of the TradeMe thread about 5+ people have emailed the owner on my behalf (as well as my 3-4 emails I've sent them) and they still havn't responded at all.

Sam really wants to keep the kitten but I don't to be honest... I just think its too cruel keeping it locked inside, its been out in the wild (lol) for over a month and is used to being outdoors... I'm sure by the amount of meowing going on it misses the outdoors a lot...

That's really sad - I'll send you a PM with the email address of a woman who may be able to help - she has contacts with a lot of the animal rescue shelters in Auckland.

Poor Mimi. I still wonder if her owner is with Xtra as I am still waiting on the delivery address of another TM member I sold something to last week.

I've just posted a thread on Happy Endings (a site for rescue shelter supporters) so hopefully someone can take Mimi and look after her until the owner is finally tracked down.

Just a thought - have you tried asking the SPCA if this woman has contacted them about her missing cat? What about the vets in the area it was originally from? It's likely it may have been vaccinated or even desexed so the local vet may know how to contact the owner.

YAY Kitten has gone home

The owner finally contacted me on Saturday Afternoon. She came and picked the kitten up on Saturday night... "mimi" ran away from her and had to be caught and handed to her... which was pretty sad... took the owner a few minutes to catch on that it was her cat and then she got all excited and was hugging mimi and jumping around our lounge...

The only thing that worried me was that she said "wow she is fatter now" and both Sam and I thought that the kitten was VERY underweight as you could feel all the bones in her back, shoulders (whatever) and hips when you stroked her... so thats a worry, but its out of our hands now and we gave her about 2 weeks worth of food, so at least she'll be well fed until then...

Thanks again to Beemer and Crashe for your help :)

Fingers crossed she will be fine, you've done all you can and Mimi was probably sorry to say goodbye as she had been spoilt rotten all week! I wouldn't worry too much about her size - we have two kittens from the same litter but the male is almost double the size of the female, despite the fact she seems to eat more than him! And with being inside and not running around outside, maybe she just put on a bit more condition. Hopefully Mimi will be fine and will settle down again with her owner - but I wouldn't be all that surprised if she turns up on your doorstep again!

lol if that happens we're taking it as a sign to keep her :)

I also told the owner about putting butter on the kittens feet when they get home... don't know if she would have, she looked me like I was crazy or something...

I was going to suggest the same - if she comes back, she's yours! With regards to the butter, it's a myth. Apparently all that it does is force the cat to clean itself which works in two ways to keep it at the new place - first of all it spends time cleaning its paws so by the time it's finished, it's forgotten about wandering off, and secondly, it replaces any lingering odours from the old place with fresh ones. We just shut ours in the house for two or three days and we never had any trouble with them wandering off.
