I am out west also. I haven't found anywhere to ride the bikes 'Legally' out that way. The closest place i can think of is Muerewai beach... Go up the beach for about 20 - 30 minutes and you can get to the bombing range full of huge sand dunes etc. Its Ok. But the sand is a pain in the neck to ride on, and is not good for the bikes...

We usually take the bikes on the ute down to Thunder park or other events that are on around greater auckland.. Checkout http://silver-bullet.co.nz/ for trail ride events...

Woodhill is ok, well I like it. But not open in the week. There is a list on KB somewhere of all aucklands places to ride. check the sticky.

But don't forget, your bike will need a warrant and rego to legally ride on the beach...

waitakere ranges? are there any walkways there? i like the concept of woodhill but the sand base has me worried about damage to the bikes. i have been told about riverhead but dont know where to go. And what is this Thunder Park, i have heard about it, but cant find any solid information about it.

I have looked at poweradventures and silver bullet, they are all organised events as such in weekends. it would be good to have somewhere to just go and ride, i may have a look around some of the 'walk ways' in the ranges this weekend.

Yeah, we found a few walking tracks up in the Waitaks. They are usually pretty soggy and tight. Gotta watch out for steps (down is fine, up can be tricky!).

We used to ride our pitbikes on them and it was heaps of fun. Hardly ever see anyone out there. I think maybe once or twice we met people walking the tracks...

Most of what we found was off Scenic drive...

Stay away from walkways. You will only cause more trouble for all bikers.
Dont get me wrong i ride off road as well and live out west. i do the muriwai bombing range trip ever so often. Otherwise its usually at Kimmy's park in Huntly(open on weekdays).
You might risk having your bike confisticated by the cops if they find you riding walkways, nothings worth losing your bike over. Plus a trip to the courts cause if they take your bike of you it will usually be followed with you being charged with a few offences.
PM me if if you want and we could round up a few people and go out as a bunch(safer).
In the process of getting the missus a dirt bike as well so we would have a few people going

i was just kidding,no way youd pull that off! we used to ride from home ( piha) down to kare kare and go right down to whatapu, getting through the glades with out being seen was the hard part, quite good riding down there, stay of the tracks though, the rangers will do you hard.

tell the people that try and shut down liget riding spots that, they tar all bikes with the same brush

pitbikes make noise and are motorbikes,
