What to buy!!!!

I'm looking at getting a new(ish) bike for trail riding. My brother rides a YZ250 and I want to be able to keep somewhere near up with him. He reckons a 4stroke 250 may be the way to go for me. I'm not as crazy as him and have more fear for my life having kids! lol. Anyone got any recommendations of reliable, not overly pricey, not so angry machines that would be able to keep somewhere near his bike?

Can't say I know huge amounts about trail bikes but I think my basic premise for selecting a bike still applies:

1. work out your budget
2. define what you want from the bike (you have already done this)
3. look for prospective bikes and take as many different models as possible for a test ride to see if they are comfortable to ride
4. narrow the numbers down and if buying second hand get a pre purchase check done if you are not technical enough to be able to do so your self.
