There have been a few threads lately with guys asking very similar questions (although not specifically about a XR650R). Check these out -

I'm confused - what part of the underside of the bikes are you undecided about?

I had an XR600 an what an awesome bike that was, until it got stolen. I am 6ft 1" and I found it a very tall bike, the sort you cant really paddle along when the going gets tough, quite heavy (not compared to a Vstrom but) oooarsome low down grunt and decent top speed. Would I have another, yes if I was riding gravel, easy tracks or deserts, no if I was doing sand dunes or hare scrambles ( JB grabs a KTM450 from his dream shed). Really easy to dig a hole with the back wheel in soft ground. Bit of a shit to get started sometimes as well. Hope that helps

have been riding a BMW 800 for a while...Pardon my ignorance, but what's a BMW 800??? What year and model type?
It seems a bit ambiguous, like me saying i'm riding a Honda 600. Can you tell if its a CBR or XLV or XR. All totally different types of bikes, i think you get the picture.

My Past experience is that XR650s,have very small fuel tanks,7 maybe 8 litres, which limits range, they are also kick start only, dont know if thats an issue

Mine had around 12 litres including reserve and I think you can buy aftermarket tanks that hold in excess of 20 litres, not sure what this would be like to ride though

Well, not entirely. OP says "for a few years". So it's not the new model just out. F series has never come in an 800. And there was never an 800cc K bike. So it has to be the R80. Which admittedly could be anything from the R80RT to the R80GS, which does span a fair range of difference.
