zxr 250 ram air ??

Hey guys i got a 1997 zxr250c. I am in the process of getting it resprayed, and polishing the rims. I have been thinking recently about getting somemore power out of the little beast. I am looking to get a race can put on it and maybe some hi - comp pistons if there are any made. My question is, when i was taking off the left side lower fairing, i noticed the intake runners that are on the inside of the fairing that direct air to the engine from the ducts at the front. The bike has them on both sides but only on the left is a large hole at the end of the intake runner that is directly opposite the intake for the airbox. Now i dont no if my bike is missing a pipe that connects the two holes, or is it just me that thinks that something should be there. I have been reading about ram air induction and how u can gain power from it. Has anyone else seen this design in the zxr250's or has anyone joined the two holes up and allow air too be forced into the airbox?? I would like to know your thoughts on my (discovery?) and whether my idea would achieve anything.

The tubes don't go into the air box, they provide air to cool the the head... The airbox is at the back. I wouldn't worry about them.

AirRam is only effective at high speeds, effectively it's ramming the air down the pipes and causing it to condense by the pipes getting smaller, effectively acting like a 'compressor' in the airbox. Chances are unless you're constantly over 150, it's not really going to have an effect. And even then, once over 150, the bike has to have enough grunt to make use of it, which still means making more power to go faster, to cram more air down the intake etc etc.

You've got a few plans for this bike then..??
If you're after more power already, then a pipe and sorting anything to do with the air intake, isn't going to gain worldly power increases on a 250, and head/piston/valve work, while cool, will be spending a shed load more, than the bike is actually worth, and worst still, power gains aren't gonna be all that either.

Best bet for you, willing to fork out for this kind of work, is to actually save it, and find yourself a prime example of a 2stroke like an RGV250 etc. The 2stroke bikes are wickedly fast over the 4 stroke counterparts, and that'll keep you going for ages. It'll also probably teach you a few mechanical things too, which is never a bad thing to learn

The ram air ducts are for looks only,they dont go anywhere!!
There was a mod,we did with ZXR400 airboxes,where a hole was drilled below where the snorkel mounted to the tank,involved mucking around rejetting etc
My suggestion would be leave the thing standard,save your money,get your full licence & buy a bigger bike

Hey Ryan,

Yes, you are missing a part! The top pipes that go through the tank are for cooling only, the air intake is on the left hand side. There is an intake scoop in the fairing, that should have a large pipe a few inches long that conencts the scoop to the airbox. Go to your local bike a shop and take a look at one, you will see what you are missing. You could make one up pretty easy.
