Last night's ride (21 March)

Last night Principia and I decided to go for a ride as it was a great night. Left home (near Grafton hospital) and headed over the bridge and to Dairy Flat to visit some friends near the air field there. Riding out of your usual comfort zone, which for us is in town was a great experience and both of us felt as if we learned a bit more because of last night.


One thing I noticed is the complete difference once the streetlights are gone. Seemed to be a bit more taxing looking through the turn.

Other things are macho drivers on the motorway coming right up your ass, and we were both doing a 100! :angry:


Anyways we were both so pleased just had to share it! :yes:

If I was, I wouldn't have any cause to bitch about it. So of course I wasn't.
Serious though, there is no reason for a car to be less than 5 feet from another vehicle doing 100. It's just dumb in anything let alone doing it to a motorcycle.

In pitch black darkness, if you're banked in a corner sometimes switching on your high beam can help see through it.
I normally do this when there are no street lights.

This is also the reason most endurance race bikes have 2 headlights (mostly stacked arrangement) where one shines low beam and the other shines higher angled beam to give more visibility when leaned over for cornering.

Of course you'll have to switch your high beam off when there are approaching vehicles and/or following a vehicle in front of you.

Sounds like a good ride mate, well done for getting out there and enjoying it. Always watch out for wankers in cages, they will usually do dumb shit like you describe and often think it is funny.

I rode through lonely track road last night with my high beam on and still couldnt see shit! Pretty freaky if you dont know the road at all, I almost ended up in someones rose bed by stupidly having faith in the posted cornering speeds

Just finished another ride tonight. This time staying in town area, as we were too lazy after a giant feed at Lonestar.

Went around Remuera, Mission Bay, Parnell, and then back to New Market. Have to say we both sorta rode like crap tonight. Seems very aggro in town ugh....

Can be crap riding around those areas for sure...i remember my first ride at night, wasnt planned but we were caught short after a huge ride up north, first time two up, first time on the new bike, first time at night and it started to rain, we were in Whangarei heading home, and i had a tinted visor, lucky my pillion had a clear so we swapped....was alot of fun.....:yes:

Another good Auckland urban loop is to drop down from Grafton, via The Strand onto Tamaki Drive. Head along Tamaki Drive to the far end of St Heliers, then veer left, following Cliff Road up to Archillies Point. Then follow the road around and hang a left onto Glover Road (past Glover Park), then straight ahead onto Riddell Road which is a nice ride through to the Tamaki River. Then you can follow Riddell Rd back to St Heliers Bay Road, or turn left up Roberta Ave and head up to West Tamaki Road and back to St Heliers Bay Road. You can return to Grafton via Kepa Rd, Orakei Rd, Shore Rd, Ayr St and the Domain, or back track along Tamaki Drive.

You need to come to one of the south auckland 250 rides, It's always a blast for me when I see other people riding gpx's as well :) Glad you're having fun on it!

A driver up my ass tooting was the cause of my first and only bin, I have serious hatred for tailgaters. Sometimes I wish someone would invent something that shoots fuses from the pillion seat into them.

I'll go on the next one for sure, when is that? Or any other time. We might head south this weekend, as we want to do a few decent runs if the weather is good. And Principia got a new red gpx so we'd have 3! :gob:
