There's a strong chance (as in, I'm waiting for a courier to deliver a contract) that I'll be leaving beautiful Wanaka within the next month or two to move north to the infinitely more profitable (for me, at least) capital city.

Any Wellingtonians fancy giving me the lowdown on where's good to live, where's not, anyone got a really good or bad landlord or real estate agent?

From what I remember of Wellington and surrounds, we quite fancied Porirua, weren't so enamoured of the Hutt, but that all seems *so* long ago. I've got little kids with me, and my partying days are over, so proximity to Hooters is less of a concern than a local park, shopping etc. Sad but true.

Cheers, dears.

Chris.

Upper Hutt is a good area for Family living, house prices are still semi-reasonable up there too. Have a look around when you come up, you might see Porirua in a different light.

I would suggest a trip up here & have a look around, where will you be working??
There are alot of KB members in the Johnsonville/Newlands area & is only about 15/20 minutes drive to town

There was a recent similar thread started by someone from overseas. It had a lot of good comments. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

Money, time and hassle to take an extra trip, really, although I am resigned to living in a motel for a week or two, so I should do some sums and see which is the more effective way to bleed cash.

Job's right in town, for Gen-i. Although I'm pessimistic enough that I'm keeping my fingers crossed right up until I see some paper with numbers and signatures on it.

I don't even recall seeing them on the map. I'll have a look later.

Cheers,

Chris.

D'oh. It's always easier to be lazy and ask again than it is go and search, isn't it? I'll see what I can find.

Ta,

Chris.

The Greater Wellington region is all magnificent. I suspect affordability and proximity to work will be your primary considerations when organising accommodation. You will find a range of property values in all areas. Wanaka is a great place to live but Wellington shouldn't disappoint you too much.

AHHHHHhhhh, Gen-i. Nice, a workmate has a few mates there and TLC and Gen-i have both known each other for ages

I'd say go for Newlands or somewhere in town if possible

Upper Hutt would mean a decent commute, prehaps some one who lives that way can say how long it takes in the mornings?

Absolutely. I guess what I'm trying to do is ensure that I don't end up in the one place that everyone who knows say "Jesus, not there; it looks great but you'll get knifed walking down to the dairy!"

I don't think it will. The missus isn't looking forward to saying goodbye to these mountains, but I really liked Wellington, from what I saw. I keep reminding her that the most important bit is that we're still here, in NZ, not bailing and running back to the UK. Or worse -- Auckland!

;)

I found that recent thread, just the ticket, so I can stop wasting everyone's time with duplication.

Cheers, all.

Chris.

Me? Assuming that you mean the hair style and not the fish, no, I don't have a mullet.

Should I have one? Is my continued residence in New Zealand contingent on my adoption of an '80s haircut?

Perhaps I forgot to get that connecting flight, and I'm still asleep in the departure lounge at Sydney, absorbing disturbing Australian fashions via osmosis. Next thing you know, I'll be idly musing about buying a red checked flannel workshirt and tearing the sleeves off, and then I'll be shaken awake, screaming.

The having of a mullet may crystalise your decision about what part of the Greater Wellington region in which you should live. Ditto whether or not you drive a Valiant and have a girlfriend called Shantelle.

Ah, I see.

:)

No, no and no, in that order. I have a #1 haircut, drive a mini-van and have a wife whom I call "your majesty".

I thought it was Sharon (Shazza) or Sheila. I see Shantelle has turned up too, is she still accepted if it's spelled with a C?

Chris.

OI!!!! less of that thankyou, Auckland is a much better choice than turning tail and running back to the UK. At least in Auckland you can still get out easily, and be in the real country in just 1/2 an hour.

I know what you mean about the mountains but at least you wont have to spend six hours in the morning scraping fucken ice off your windscreen up here and you can always catch the ferry back down south for a ride and a visit!!!

No, I just have to peg the car down at night so as to make sure it doesn't get blown over.

easy to get to the city in 15-20 min from there on a bike.
Culture shock comming from Wanaka! i moved from Queenstown to here 3 years ago.

It's those Shantelles spelt with two Ps and a silent Q that shit me to tears.

Doesn't look like it matters where you want to live she will have the final say!

A common trend when I go up the coast to Porirua is I leave the cloud and fog and rain to find dry roads and clear skies. Then there is the valley dont go there.

Stokes Valley? The guy has already said he hasn't got a mullet, they won't let you in without one up there.
