View Full Version : Wellington: Newbie ride?
Trudes
22nd March 2007, 19:57
Hi all, date set for 15th April, details are as follows:
This is a chance for newer riders in the area to get togeather and head out on an organised ride.
THIS IS NOT A RACE...This is most important as we don't want anybody crashing cause it will be a fun day out.
Go at your own pace, there will be people who will wait for you.
Make sure your bike is road legal ie: warrant, rego, chain oiled and adjusted, tyres the correct pressure......
The plan is to gather at Caltex Rimutaka Upper Hutt for the trip over the Rimutakas to Featherston.
Townies: Meet at the caltex truck stop Hutt road Kaiwharawhara 9:45am for 10:00am depature. We'll ride down SH2 to Plimmerton, over Greys Rd to Pahatanui, over the Haywars and to Rimutex to meet everyone else.
All others meet at Caltex Rimutaka 11:00am for 11:30am departure.
LETS MAKE THIS A GREAT DAY
Also looking for experienced riders to help out with back markers and to share riding tips and any questions the newbies might ask.
Please pop your name on the attendance thing in the calender here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1238&day=2007-3-15) for the April 15th ride.
Cheers peeps.

hehe, umm, ok a poll it is. I hate making decisions for other people ( dear husband), I rather like democracy, so I'm off to try to find how to do a poll, wish me luck.
Oh, and so far we've got about 4 offers of help and 1 newbie! LOL. Come on newer peoples, it's fun, not scary at all!!!, Honest!

The poll doesn't look like revealing a stand-out winner... I suggest we choose ALL THREE Sundays, starting with 8th April. That way people can go on as many or as few of the rides as they want, and if the weather is crap one week it doesn't mean no ride at all.
I might not be able to make the 22nd any more, but I don't seem to be able to remove my vote.
Trudes
28th March 2007, 10:00
That's not a bad idea! It's fine by me, I don't mind going for an organised ride every weekend, but it may be a bit too much time away from other commitments to expect everyone to drag themselves out every weekend.
SO, can I propose that we make it Easter Sunday, and if the weather's crap we do it the next Sunday which is the 15th, what do ya think?
Panther
28th March 2007, 10:10
up in dorkland one of the rides was (about) one every 2 weeks, and it alternated from saturday one fortnight to the sunday the next fortnight, so if you were working saturdays you still atleast got to go once a month. sometimes rides were small (3 people) and others they were large (17). just a thought for those super keen riders:scooter:

28th March 2007, 10:30
It's an idea Sallo. Just haven't been overwhelmed with a response from Newbies wanting to come, mainly just a ton of helping type people (Which is awesome, thanks guys! )
I have to say, just from my own stand point, I don't want to organise a ride every two weeks, I have enough other stuff to do, so I don't mind doing one every few months, but if someone's really keen, they can organise more frequent ones, just worry the novelty may wear off, there's also TCWNR for newbies too, so they are fairly well catered for.

I second that.
As an aside, given that it is now dark in the evenings and TCWNR is therefore a bit scary, perhaps we could start a TCWDR - The Cruisy Weekend Day Ride - which, as Sallo suggests, could alternate Sat and Sun. It wouldn't take much organising - just post a thread and whoever turns up, rides.
Edit: Maybe we can discuss this over lunch on the 8th.

Sounds like a plan kids. So the newbie ride is on the 8th, someone from out the Hutt way may like to inform us of the weather if it's looking dodgy on the day, in which case it'll be on the 15th. All will be posted in the thread starter. I will also do the calender entry and whoever is keen can put their name down.

Ok, so to bring this back on topic!!!!!
I was just wondering how many eatery type places will be open on Easter Sunday and not charging like wounded bulls to be so?
What do people think of having a BYO picnic lunch or coercing a non-rider/bike-less sap into coming along in a car with a BBQ and snags in the back?
hsvboy06
29th March 2007, 09:47
Let your fingers do the walking... Choose wherever you want to take us, give them a call, ask if they'll be open, and what they'll be charging. More to the point, prepare them for about 20 bikers to arrive!
BYO picnic lunch is also fine with me.

I know you are hsv, and I appreciate the helpful comments. :sunny:
As you mentioned there are only 3 people registered so far, so I can't start ringing anywhere to say there are a group of bikers turning up, it could be 3 or it could be 30. I suggested the picnic or BBQ so I wouldn't have to bother with exact numbers and people could be a little freer to turn up on a whim, with their lunch, I'm sure most people can make a sandwich.

Just a reminder that the first of the newbie rides is this Sunday. Bring your newbie and your sandwich. Don't be shy newer people, this ride is for you, so come along and meet some of the regulars, come for a ride and learn some new skills. Also, all those experienced type people that PMed me, please do come along, we may end up with a ratio of one newbie to 5 helpers, but that's cool, and some of you can always go for your own faster paced ride somewhere and then meet back up a bit later on.:sunny:

Good morning all!!!! Have an excited kid on my hands who's off to Tauranga on the 9:40 plane to collect his new ride. But anyway, anyone want to give us a first-hand report of what the weather is doing in the Hutt and in the 'Rapa, please. Looks like the damp cloud stuff will burn off to me, but then, I'm a bit meteorologically challenged!
Oh and anyone from the 'Rapa can choose to meet us at Rimutex at 11-11:20ish or at the top of the hill at about 11:30ish.

Was great to meet you too Matt, and all the others that came along too!
Turned into a lovely day, bit of traffic on the hill, but that's understandable. As many commented, That probably was the fastest newbie ride I've ever been on too!! I think we only got 2 or 3 newbies turn up (now that's newbies on 1000cc bikes????) and the majority of people on 250s are jolly good riders anyway (Thanks for the giggles you two, you know who you are!) When Elle and I took off from Featherston, I was riding along thinking "just stick to the speed limit, it's a newbie ride and the rest will catch up in a minute", then 2 crazy people went flying past me (you two are meant to be sensible!! LOL)
Had a lovely laid back picnic in the square and then lost everyone. So C&C rider, quallman1234 and I went around the lake back to Featherston (thanks for the company guys, hope you had a safe trip home!).
Awesome day, thanks all, thanks Grub and Nasty for being TEC and BB#1 for being my voice (I'm loud but hate public speaking!) and to everyone that turned up to help the newbies!
Same again next Sunday!! I'll book at a pub for lunch, thinking Featherston pub? What does everyone think of that? Will need an idea of numbers though, so if you're coming, plz put your name in the calender thing, thanks!
P.S. Some stripper put their shirt in my bag!! Would you like me to bring it for you next Sunday?

Col said right when he was standing next to you we'll go to Lake Ferry and then home, I even beeped my horn at you as you turned off to go back towards Featherston instead of continuing to lake Ferry. I had followed you that far out of town.
C&C rider was following me until then and I pointed to Quallman that we were heading straight on, that's where Col and quite a crowd had gone. So we missed you at the Lake Ferry pub and the coffee machine had just broken down when we got there.

My girls... you're all lurvely, curvy and cuddly... AND you put up with me... being me... group hug... :grouphug:
I had a blast today, well actually blasted a bit after Martybro - those roads are pretty straight and flat in parts. First time I've ever had batterless fush & chups (and what did you call that green stuff?) You girls all know that I'm available for big brother duties whenever I'm needed so just holler and I'll do my best to hear ya. The "Picnic in the Square" was cool... at least in the shade. The weather played it's part and so did the riders... I didn't hear about any off's so I think everyone got home safe and sound - that in itself is bloody good (given the number of bins lately).
I used to live in Pirinoa and Lake Ferry many moons ago and I haven't been back for 20 years. In case you guys following me were wondering what all the pointing and head shaking was about... I was just having a laugh to myself remembering days gone by... Back when I was a boy...
As far as riding goes, I improved throughout the day to the point where I scraped my pegs on going up & down the Taka's. Apparently, according to the guy on the GSXR1000 I need 100 more to keep up with him... but I think I did ok...:innocent: No wheelies though...
Thanks peeps (& Trudes) for a cracker day out.

Just to make sure there is no confusion, the ride tomorrow will follow the previous weeks ride format, with the addition of a buddy system for newbies if they want it.

Awesome to meet some local bikers, huge thanks to Mrs KD for organising - and not laughing at me (much) whn I nearly dropped the bike just outside Pauhatahui:innocent:
Hawkeye and Ang (sorry Ang, never did find out your KB name) - I lost you on the Rimutakas somewhere, not sure if you were stopping at the top or not. Thanks for the offer of a coffee and sorry I missed out, it would have gone down a treat.

And what a great day it turned out to be! Well done the KD's. I like it when you arrange the weather and the lunch to be so perfect.
We counted something like 30 people so I wonder how many bikes that was? Not only was our group fairly large, we got overrun by as many HOGs at Rimutex and then when we got to the top of the hill there seemed to be as many other sprots bikes and assorteds up there too ... just one of those great riding days. I don't really remember seeing so many bikes out and about like there were today/ Does that mean we realise there's not that many great warm days left for riding? That would be sad (although it doesn't get lawns mowed or ironing done).
The lunch at the Featherson Pub was great. The dining room awaited us with one great long table laid out with menus, serviettes and real knives and forks - they must have mistaken us for some sophistocated group that knew how to use them.
We then trooped over to Martinborough for another sit-down and natter at the Flying Fish (now called Toppy's). That session came to a quick stop when rain clouds started forming.
Great day's riding, heaps of traffic on the hill coming home. I was especially fond of the gold Subaru that loved me so much it wanted to make a hood ornament of me. {Flattered look}.
Good fun, lets do it again!

I'm glad everyone said they had a good day riding and meeting fellow bikers, it was also very nice of the Royal Hotel to set us up in the Dining room, what good folks, so don't forget to stop in for lunch again some time!

Well that sounds like a fun challenge for someone ... so here goes. I throw this one into the ring for next Sunday ... comments?
Kari and I did a great 40km ride a few weeks ago which would fit the format perfectly. I'm happy to do all the detail work.
The route is something like Rimutex, Rimutaka Summit to meet the 'rapa crew, back down to Te Marua, left into the Maymorn Plateau, along the Mangaroa Valley and into Whiteman's Valley to the Short Straw Cafe (a primo location and licensed cafe) at http://www.smaps.co.nz/nz/upper+hutt...s/hinkley+way/
The ride from Te Marua to the cafe is about 21km of interesting and sometimes bumpy roads. The cafe is then only about 7km via Blue Mountains Rd (interesting ride!) down to Silverstream.
I called the cafe just now to see if they could handle 20 in a group at about 12:30 and they said sure, they would put us in the Gallery function room so I have pencilled it in my name (no mention of bikers ... lol)
Have just checked the long-range rural forecast for Wairarapa and Kapiti, both show "Fine, dry, light winds".
Whaddya think?

Whaddya think, I reckon "for sure."
I got a few comments:
Kendogs - you done did good last week and this week. Well Done and Thank You.
Grubb and Nasty - thank you for asking me to lead the cruisie crew.
Grubb - The Short Straw cafe is smack in the middle of my newbie riding that I must say I shared with our Uncle B on numerous occasions going up Blue Mountains Road and through Whitemans Valley to Maymorn onto Te Marua.
I have some thoughts that I would like to share relating to monthly rides in May and June for cruisie/newbies, and in July we can arrange a winter ride lunch, over the hill. More later over coffee next week.
Thank you all for a most enjoyable ride today.
Heads Up and Enjoy

I loved today - hooning a bit over the hill to meet the crew then back over to go for lunch. I really can't get enough of that hill so much in fact that I am heading over there again tomorrow morning! Hope I dont get stuck in that Welly working traffic!
Lunch was great - then off to Martinborough which was an interesting ride after that copper shook his finger at us - to slow down.
THEN..........and this is where my day was made....
I arrived at the Gladstone after tootling around the back way and HELLO! i arrived just in time to see these amazing wheelies past the Gladdy. I could not believe the skill of the man.....You have another fan here for sure.
Thanks for that - topped off a cool day :)

Nice to see you folks - sorry we didn't wait at the top of the hill but needed to get to the hotel and order lunch 1st (heh heh).. Bad stuff can happen if I'm number 39 in the queue for lunch....
Nice ride up the hill with very little traffic (it was quiet everywhere really) following Lissa's spiritedly ridden GN250. She looked a bit nervous about the TR6C being behind her (most people are nervous when it's in front) but we were happily admiring what a well ridden GN can achieve - very stylish and safely ridden (well thats what it looked like). Besides, I'm not sure the old Trumpy had enough puff to get past and I was hardly going to embarass myself....
Anyway - we bimbled off around Martinborough, Gladstone cafes etc as per usual and even stopped at the top of the hill to see LB and Hamish plus assorted others and met the infamous Bryce (sp?) who disappointed me by not having fangs or looking remotely ogreish, bah!
Droned home down the hill in great style except near the bottom where I pulled off a really stupid and totally un necessary overtaking move putting Vicki and myself at some risk for little gain - I was bloody furious with myself afterwards - dumb dumb dumb... Not a major sin in the great scheme of things and I think the 'hill' sees much much worse every day but hardly a fair thing to do with a pillion and I'm stuffed if I know why I did it... I guess things had been going very well and I just over reached it?? I'm not sure Vicki really knew how close we came to disaster or maybe she was too polite to say? Jeeze I can be a dumbarse...

Looks like you had a great ride without us. We spent 5 days over in the Wairarapa and were riding constantly for 3 of them on our trail bikes and I might post a story on that later when I get around to it.
We caught up with elle33f and Lissa earlier and they suggested if we were close to the Gladstone Pub on Sunday afternoon we should drop in as some KBers were bound to be there. So you weren't going to get rid of us that easily.
In the end after going down a dead end dirt track earlier in the day we got to Gladstone about 3pm (a bit concerned we were short on gas too as the Riversdale store has closed its gas supplies down at the moment) and I gather we missed the wheelie show by FIZZERMAN, but then just as we were ordering a nice hot drink inside he did one last one as he left, but alas my camera was not at the ready.
I did take these few photos though. Our trail bikes look slightly out of place amongst the roadies. Lissa's GN had a good spot ready for a quick take-off and then elle33f posed for a couple of photos, but hey why did you close your eyes in the second one?
I've posted a story about our riding here in the advneture section http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=48097

I must say the exhaust of that Radian makes a rather heavy sound and was just the biz as she accelerated away from Gladstone Pub.
My other comment would be to Skelstar - how may kms you got on the Hornet now because it was blowing a surprising amount of blue oil smoke as you accelerated away from the Pub while I was indoors enjoying my hot chocolate?

Thanks for those comments Paul. Was a little flustered seeing you behind me, but I really do enjoy pushing the GN as fast as it can go (safely) up the takas.
But..... I am going to be selling the Ginny as soon as possible. :bye: Shes not the right bike for me to learn on, infact I am at the stage I am starting to hate riding her. Its not safe for the type of riding I am doing, I cant pass well, and not safely esp if the car I am passing decides to speed up. Looking at getting a GT250 or a VTR250 asap.
