Rentals expensive

I am doing a tour around NZ in dec/jan but the rental prices are high :gob: $$$ and would cost to much to ship my bike over so was thinking of buying a good low mileage bike and then selling it on after doing my trip should still be in good condition just with a few more km on the clock, Any advice on what type of bike I could sell on at the end easily without losing to much $ and is reliable?
I was thinking of a Suzuki SV 650/1000, do they sell ok in NZ?

sv650's seem popular - and on a side note, just how much does it cost to freight your bike that sort of distance out of random interest?

Which would be more expensive:

* shipping your bike over to NZ and back. Plus insurance for shipping and while it's here.


* Buying a bike here, plus insurance. Selling it for less than you paid for it.

Depends if you have the $$$ to just go and buy a bike... the hardest part would be timing the sale with your flights.

If you find a compliant dealer, you may be able to broker a deal whereby they agree a buy-back price on your chosen ride, subject to "normal wear and tear" and with an extra, say, 10,000km on the clock. Presumably anything other than "normal wear and tear" would be covered by your insurance. Hopefully the difference between the purchase and buy-back prices would be less than the total daily rental accrued from a bike hire business. You would be responsible for all maintenance, insurance and running costs.

Now, finding a dealer enlightened enough to consider such a deal may be a challenge...

Personally, I'd buy the 1000 over the 650 - they just seem to be more common.

You could try asking cowpoos if he can do a deal for you, he does lease bikes but I don't know if he can do short term stuff.

I met a Canadian guy touring who managed to do a buy back deal on a BMW 650 from somewhere in Auckland, can't remember where he said he got it though sorry. They are around though.

How much is it ti rent a bike?, and for how long? (daily rate?)

If it's too dear, I'd be inclined to buy a bike like a sv650/1000 (7-10k), and if you have friends here, get them to sell it for you when you return to the UK, you obviously can afford the trip here, so I'm sure you can wait a little while for the bike to sell. I'd buy privately too, like trademe, better deal, and sell it via the same. You should not lose too much money, and might even break even!.......leave the dealers (stealers) out of the equation all together, you'll lose every time...........

I have found some dealers who do buy backs will have to work out some costs and see if it is worth the extra hassle. I am not going until start of Dec & coming back mid jan (High season so prices up!)
Rentals are as much as $350 for a 1000cc sports or big harley etc daily rate down to about $150 for sv650/600 hornets etc
I will look into freighting bike but I expect that will cost a small fortune so probably a no go on that one.
Might just have to rent a bike for a few days or a week and use the coach or cheap hire car for the rest of my trip to keep the cost down

Maybe i will get one of those little monkey bikes that can be taken apart and fit in a shoulder bag take it as hand luggage :scooter: haha

If your shrewd enough you could buy a bike for a bargain price and then sell it on for a profit.

But then I'm a Jock and always looking to accumulate cash!
