Heya,
I'm promised Rhino (after the "How many bikes you owned" thread) that I would scan and put up some old pics in an album I recently found.
From what I believe, these were taken at the infamous "Kaikoura Trial" (yes Trial) back in 1971 or 2.
This was his Yamaha R-5 350 (these were the forerunner to the RD-350's).
He bought this after his Mach111 500. Maybe he got too scared after a while !!
The teenage lady on the back of the bike is my Mum !!!!
Check the pipe hanging out of his mouth (chic back then).
Cheers
NDMz.
PS Wanna see who'll do this on a Gixxer.

Brilliant photos, what a great set of memories.
Puts the whole issue of a bit of gravel on the road into perspective! (Where's Motu!?)

Council being a bit tardy with the grader again, eh. That's what roads were like back then. Y' didnt bitch about it, just plugged on. Not as bad as the dreaded pumice .
Ah, the R5. I had one of them, and the R3 before it. They were damn good bikes, better than the Mach III.
Respect.

Awesome photos, love em.
Nothing quite like light fall off in old consumer optics (if it wasn't the glorified kodak boxcams like the duoflex). Yum.

Priceless. That's what we did in those days used the same bike for everything - road, trail, competition.

Ahhh, the thing we used to do when we didn't know any better. You've got to love the 70's when you could do anything on your two stroke road bike.

Begs the question of "how many were found guilty at this trial..." Sorry, couldn't resist that one!
Great piccies. Also good to see the ladies being involved back then!

Or 4-stroke road bike.
Most of my mates had trail bikes - I had a CB175, so I rode that in the dirt. Got very good at donuts, feet-up slides, and was getting the hang of wheelstands till I wrote it off while practising them.
Got most of the way up Mt Tarawera on the CB (back in the days when you could take bikes up there). Got ALL the way up on my MT250 a year later, and there was a makeshift motocross track up there the locals played on. :niceone:

Awesome pics NDMz, brings back memories of early days of riding. Everyone I knew would do crazy shit on their bikes like this, beach, road, forest, river crossing, didn't matter where you were the bike would handle it....... usually! lol
Great to have so many photo's of your dad doing this stuff mate, I don't have any of my dad riding. :(
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the great pics. As many have said already, in those days you did everything on your road bike if you could.
I did a tour through Burkes Pass via farm roads to Benmore dam on a Yamaha TX650 in 1973. I suppose we would use an adventure bike now. As it was the only bike I owned when the event came up, it was ride "The Tractor" or don't go.
The pipe was a Peterson, I smoked one until around 1990.

Ha ha ha,....I found a pic (admittedly not very good quality) of his son doing some off-roading on his '86 GSXR400. This was out at Coes Ford in 1989.
Must be a family tradition, because this bike was 2-up toured, raced & commuted on before being written off on the way back from Akaroa.

I had a rear seat for it, must be the angle or the scan as you say. Also had a seat cowl.
Superb bike that was.
